Rockies Stone Cubs with Long Ball Bonanza

Jaron Shepherd and Correlle Prime smacked solo home runs to highlight a three-run 1st inning, 2012 1st round pick David Dahl blasted a two-run HR to key a three-run 4th, Jared Simon singled, tripled, walked twice, and scored two runs, and Jeff Popick singled twice, doubled, and drove-in a run, leading the Rockies to an 8-2 victory over the Cubs in Extended Spring Training action this morning at Fitch Park Field #4 (formerly known as "Field #3") in Mesa, AZ.

Garrett Schlecht drilled a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 2nd inning and Trevor Gretzky crushed a 420+ ft solo HR over the right-centerfield fence with two outs in the bottom of the 9th to account for the two Cub runs.

The defensive play of the day was a run-saving diving catch of a sinking line-drive by Rashad Crawford in short CF.

AzPhil,

Okay, let's try another question, as I just saw that you answered my first question in yesterday's comments (on Dan Sanchez). Have you seen enough of Marra to make a judgment on his defensive potential behind the dish? (if you've answered this recently, I apologize).

TOONSTER: Justin Marra has a below-average arm & receiving skills need work, but he is the best catching prospect at EXST, and he should be the #1 catcher at Boise.

Good to see Trevor Gretzky flash some stick, AZ PHIL. Thanks.

I just have a feeling that the Bears are going to, once again, drink that ND Koolaide and draft The Catfished Man.

He could then join other stellar Bear-ND alumni such as Chris Zorich, Rick Mirer, Tom Zibikowski,Frank Budka, Jim Flanigan, Mike Gandy, Paul Grasmanis, Johnny Lujack, Mike Stonebreaker, and Dave Duerson. Plus 11 more.

Actually, some of the above were good players. But I never cared for ex-Bears who went on to play for the Packers.

This is predicated of course, on if they choose to trade the pick which seems like the best, "safest" thing to do.

Or, they could pick a Corner which is surely a need big-time after this year.

But then, if Trestman sees something special at QB, maybe this is the year to do that before Cutler starts scowling? It would certainly be a surprise, but there is no one backing up that could be a bona fide NFL starter.

"and draft The Catfished Man" -not going to happen.

I wish Trevor's sister would flash more.

It's now official: MLB tells umpires Jean Segura should have been called out for "stealing" first base http://espn.go.com/mlb/blog/_/name/stark_jayson/id...

hawk harrelson vs brian kenny arguing sabrmetrics is an exercise in futility.

it's one thing to poke holes in methods, it's one thing to call into question assumptions, it's one thing to question formulas used to gain conclusions...it's another to totally dismiss sabrmetrics and insist it's useless.

i would suggest people check it out on replay on MLB network, but you will learn nothing and gain zero perspective. my brain hurts, hawk.

Living in the Chicago viewing area, I like to watch more than the Cubs (i.e. MLB, ESPN, and Comcast games). However, Hawk makes watching any White Sox game on Comcast or Channel 9 virtually unlistenable. I can only watch with TV muted. Can't believe Stone can stand working with him.

Even most Sox fans I know can't stand him.

Well at least I think we got what it was like when the Pope argued with Copernicus

Hawk is still absolutely amazed when a pitcher throws something other thn a fastball on 3-1.

nothing new here, but a rehash of how the Ricketts were forced into a highly leveraged deal to buy the Cubs

dear e.jackson,

quit sucking.

k, thnx, bye.

also, wtf MLB EI not carrying this game? bunk.

Crunch-

He's not listening. Maybe use CAPS for your next try?

i'd be more pissed if i didn't have full faith that MIA can blow a game with more precise skill than CHC.

They trade Schierholtz yet?

suck vs blow

And suck wins it. Woohoo!

marmol strikes out m.stanton for the save...lulz.

...after walking a guy and giving up a single to start the inning.

Ogletree still available at #20....

what shall the Bears do?

OG Kyle Long from Oregon (6'6, 313 lb)

surprise, surprise...

Wow that is a reach. They could have traded down and probably still gotten him.

need someone willing to trade of course...

While true, this is still a big reach. Well we certainly needed OL line help so we'll see.

/edit I think this guy could be good but he's a definite project and not an immediate impact player.

i don't know, second first round project bears have taken in a row

Howie Long's kid...

Scouts Inc. pros: He displays excellent first step quickness and has the ability to execute scoop, hook or reach blocks from the backside. When playing with proper pad level he can generate an explosive surge and can move defenders off the ball. Light on his feet and rarely seen on the ground. He is a very gifted athlete and an easy mover in space.

Scouts Inc. cons: Awareness is obvious area of weakness as a prospect and inexperience shines through. He appears to have more natural instincts in pass pro than as a run blocker at this point. Can be a step late identifying and locating targets in the run game at times. Also needs to work on timing coming off of combo blocks. Can be a second late identifying blitzes and defensive line movement in protection on occasion.

I read another scouting report somewhere that said he stands too upright and has trouble keeping his hands down - but it was overall a pretty positive report, very quick feet, etc. Despite the Bears luck with recent OL drafts - and I still hold out some hope for Carimi - I'm never gonna beef about building the O-line.

That awkward moment when other teams refuse to make an offer for your draft pick because they think you're just going to waste it anyways.

Another "surprise pick" in the first round for the Bears. Sigh.

Maybe publicly threatening to demote Rizzo wasn't the best idea.

Garza rehab start on May 1st now....

  • AZ PHIL: With starters the likes of Edwin Jackson, even Chris Rusin or Michael Bowden could look good on their staff. At best, he is a #5-6. But as always, LH are at a premium.

  • Sure we would all want consistency. He is not even 24, has played 5 (!) positions this year. Can you imagine what is in his head? He was only a part-time player at 2 spots last year. And THEN think about hitting?? Cut him some slack...You sure are picky lately. First wishing #6 NL RBI guy Russell have a better average, and now an "unncessarily fancy pick". Geez tough crowd!

  • it's going to be hard to take down scherzer.

kershaw is supposedly coming back soon, though he'll probably need a good amount of deep innings to match up with scherzer...probably too late at this point. tanner roark, bumgarner, and hendricks are probably going to steal some votes along with kershaw.

  • I absolutely love Javy's game, and I love the way Maddon changed the perception of him as a ballplayer, but I really wish he would just make the routine plays routinely. On the ground ball in the 9th, he made an unnecessarily fancy pick. He made the play, but tried the same thing last night and made an error.

  • How many wins does Kyle need for serious Cy Young consideration? Would 17 be enough if he leads the league in ERA? My goodness, what a season -- makes a Dartmouth alum proud.

  • kuhl is a righty, not a lefty.

i think maddon might think kuhl is a lefty, too. i wonder what the reasoning is for baez leading off vs a rightie.

that's from my 1st post. there's no suck involved in that. maybe with a few less posts about bullshit that point would have jumped out more.
