Golden to Kane County as Cubs Edge A's at Fitch Park

Shawon Dunston Jr and Brad Zapenas collected three hits a piece, Francisco Sanchez stroked a two-run single and a double, and Loiger Padron tossed three innings of one-hit shutout ball, as the Cubs edged the Athletics 4-3 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Fitch Park Field #4 in Mesa, AZ

The game was pre-planned as a ten-inning contest so that all of the A's and Cubs pitchers who were scheduled to throw today could get their work.

In EXST Cubs roster news, OF Reggie Golden has been promoted to Kane County.

The Cubs 2010 2nd round draft pick out of Wetumpka, AL, Golden suffered two torn knee ligaments while running the bases as a member of the Peoria Chiefs in April 2012, and missed the balance of the 2012 season. He looked rusty at Minor League Camp this past March, and so he was left behind at Extended Spring Training to get into better playing shape.

Golden was mired in a 1-22 slump through his first 11 Cactus League Extended Spring Training games, but turned things around beginning on April 30th. He ended up hitting 250/384/400 in 24 Cactus League EXST games (73 PA), with four doubles, one triple, one HR & 12 RBI, 12/19 BB/K, and two SB (no CS), but he was especially hot over his last ten games (35 PA), hitting 400/486/533 with two doubles, a triple, and eight RBI over that span.

Also, RHRP Larry Suarez has been moved-up to Daytona.

In five Cactus League EXST games (7.0 IP), Suarez allowed one run (earned) on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts (1.29 ERA & 1.00 WHIP). Suarez struggled to throw strikes in Minor League Camp, and was left behind at Extended Spring Training to build up arm strength and work on his mechanics.

Now 23, the 6'4 270 Suarez was signed as a 16-year old "bonus baby" out of Venezuela on July 2, 2006 (the first day of the 2006 International Signing Period). He has occasionally shown flashes of talent (he was the closer for a while at Peoria last season), but has mostly been a disapointment. He is eligible to be a Rule 55 minor league free-agent (AKA "six-year free-agent") post-2013 if he is not added to the Cubs 40-man roster or agrees to a 2014 minor league successor contract by the 5th day following the conclusion of the 2013 World Series.

#Cubs Vizcaino underwent debridement on right elbow. Had some discomfort. Won't pick up a bb for 6 weeks. Ligaments are good"

Hopefully Theo will learn from the Jerry Angelo multiple mistakes of take broken players.

At least this one didn't die!

welly hits his 1st HR since april 8th (2nd overall)...cubs lead by 2 in the top 2nd.

rain delay....lame...

bottom 3rd, man on 1st, 1 out...ejax pitching well.

tb sends down odor...c.archer might get called up soon (maybe a stop-gap reliever until needed)

Dr. Lewis Yocum, a guy most of us feared hearing his name associated with any player, died this weekend.

he was the Angels team doc, but many players of many teams went to him to get a professional opinion or do their TJ surgery.

With the number two pick are the Cub's facing a kind of Seaver/Schmidt choice people imagined for the Prior/Teixeira draft?

I wouldn't pass up on Gray if Astros take Appel, but Bryant vs. Appel would be a tough decision.

Be better if Bryant was left handed hitter though.

regardless, Soler, Almora, Bryant outfield doesn't sound terrible

A rotation of Samardzija, Garza, Gray/Appel, Wood and Jackson wouldn't be too bad.

Garza's not coming back.

It is unlikely, but it depends on the offers they receive. I am beginning to lean towards keeping him as: (i) I don't expect a pile of prospects in return, (ii) I think the contract will be shorter, and (iii) you can't have enough front line starters.

my feeling is that Garza's asking price and Cubs idea of fair value for Garza are nowhere close or he would have signed last year.

after seeing Anibal Sanchez's contract, Garza would be wise to test the market...the only way I seem him staying is if draft pick compensation scares other team's away.

You are likely correct, and who they draft could be a big tell regarding Garza's fate.

#Cubs Fujikawa to undergo Tommy John surgery on right arm. Has not set day for surgery or picked doctor. He's done for the season

Vitters to Iowa DL as well, strained rib cage

paging Ian Stewart, if they can find you...

again.

So when is Lim going to be ready again?
Who throws the hardest in the minors right now at AA or above? Tony Zych has not had a strong season as far as I can tell. How far away is he?

It's not like Fuji was pitching reliable ball. Still this is just one more contract to chalk up as Cubbery.

Can we assume that they will be able to collect on the insurance policy?

I thought that I had heard that the cost of the policies had increased so much that many teams don't get them anymore except in the most extreme cases. I don't have a link to back that up or anything though.

edit - here's a couple of links about baseball insurance if anyone is interested:

Fujikawa to have TJS according to rotowire.

Edit - Looks like I was a bit late on the post here.

That's what Jason Schmidt told me.

2/9.75 for 12 innings.

I have heard. By the way, have you guys checked out this new band: the Spin Doctors? Seems
ike a long career for them ahead...

;)

Dude...Blind Melon is going to be bigger than Nirvana!!
Er...

Gin Blossoms ftw

Lol...the Gin Blossoms are playing at Ravinia this summer...yes, I'm going.

The Fujikawa thing is one of the reasons I don't like the idea of massive free agent contracts for pitchers. In his case, it seemed like a reasonable gamble, since for one thing it doesn't qualify as massive in today's market, but I'd be awfully careful about extending, say, Garza, or hitting up the free agent market for an ace. A Sherpamardza contract extension is really an interesting predicament. At times, this guy seems like he could be an extremely dominating pitcher, but as of yet he still hasn't justified a mega deal. It'll be interesting to see how Theocorp plays that one.

The Navarro game...

The kid is having a good day.

if you had D. Navarro on May 29th as the best individual Cubs performance of the year, you win!!!

i had fujikawa

~sad horn~

I probably spaced out and this is old news, but did Coello throw this pitch as a Cub?

a.burnett debut

1ip 1h 0bb 0k

Does anyone know of a website that tracks rookie service clocks?

QUICK!!! Trade him while the trade value is high. The clock is ticking ...

Cubs run differential back to +1. But record is still 21-30. =/

DBacks, @Angels, Pirates, Reds are next 4 opponents...wouldn't expect the record to improve much.

gets easier after that @Mets, @ Cardinals, vs. Astros, @ Brewers, @ Seattle before another tough stretch before the ASB (@ A's, vs Pirates, vs. Angels, vs. Cardinals)

barring some minor miracle comeback to .500, would expect the selling to start sometime after the break (can't begin soon enough for me, hopefully after the draft).

anyone have a list of 17-18 year old dominican players on contending teams to see what the pool of future cubs are going to be?

They should trade for Josh effing Sale

“Threw 50 cents at a stripper tonight. First time. Got kicked out and she got so pissed thought she was gonna cry. Your a stripper. Be thankful. Hoe.”

fwiw, Alex Colome gets the call for TB's SP rotation filler over C.Archer

I generally don't mind Dan Plesac most of the time, but last night he said Navarro was the first Cub to hit three HR since Merv Rettemund. And that idiot Greg Amsinger didn't even correct him.

  • I have a lot of faith in Baez that he's going to turn into a more consistent, solid player. It looks like it took him about a half season or so of futility at the plate to figure out he was not talented enough to get away with the crazy approach he had. I think his running game will eventually have a more measured aggression.

  • I hope the D and bullpen show up. Cubs haven't had much luck against Davies, and he's been going well lately. A little uncomfortable with the Cards only 6.5 back--feels like they're right on our tails compared to the 11 game lead I've grown accustomed to.

  • Cardinals, stop that. Right now.

  • In a year or two, a lot of fans are going to point at trading him as a mistake. He'll probably be slashing something like 280/400/480 for Seattle at the time. Of course, by WAR, he'll still be worth less than 3, since we're talking zero defensive value.

  • vogelbomb debut for tacoma (AAA SEA)... 3-3, 1bb, 1 HR, 1 double...DH'd.

while he mostly played 1st considerably more than DH for AAA CHC, DJ Peterson is probably going to see most of the time at 1st for AAA SEA.

  • Carl Jr.! Very nice!

Baez with another "WTF?" play trying a delayed steal with a runner on 3rd and one out.. Remarkable talent, needs to make better decisions.

  • m.montgomery up in the pen with a man on 2nd, 2 out, and rondon 20 pitches into the inning.

...and rondon ends it 22 pitches in with a popout to RF.

  • I gotta say with the crappy defense the Brewers have displayed outside of Fowler I'm pretty disappointed the offense hasn't shown more and Rizzo seems to be very swing happy lately. That said my god am I happy Madden has finally given Carl Edwards a chance after multiple times up with nothing. I don't think he could handle a starting role with his body frame but his stuff plays so well in a relief role and he seems to be able to handle high stress situations very well.

  • glad to see almora going to AAA to get work.

    .265/.291/.422 through 86PA...2hr, 7 doubles.

i don't expect too much of an improvement when he's taking over CF next year, but the team doesn't really need him right now as much as they need him to get regular work (imo).

  • CHITOWNMVP01: The Cubs MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) has had one slot open since 7/6 (when RHRP Joel Peralta was Designated for Assignment).

  • The problem with the September roster is all of the pitching changes. They should find a way to limit pitchers to twelve except for extra inning games. More pinch hitters or pinch runners do little to slow the game down and are more fun than endless calls to the bullpen. I also think the fans get cheated when they use position players to pitch because employed a half dozen pitchers with righty-lefty switches. Having as few as four positions players on the bench to start a game also leads to some pretty ugly defensive substitutions.
