Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up

UPDATE: Looks like Kevin Towers jumped the gun on saying Peavy is willing to go to the Angels or Yankees, as Peavy's agent Barry Axelrod denies the report. Axelrod said Peavy may consider either team but it would require a healthy dose of extra compensation.

CBS's Scott Miller talks about the golf game between Hendry and Towers and throws Rich Hill's name into the mix.

- Bruce Levine reported on the radio talks between the Cubs and Padres centered around Sean Marshall, Felix Pie, Ronny Cedeno and Jose Ceda.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that's not enough.

The Trib's Dave Van Dyck  quotes a scout saying the Cubs lack the talent the Padres want but has a source that also mentions Felix Pie, Ronny Cedeno and others. It goes on to say that it's definitley Peavy OR Dempster for the Cubs and not Peavy AND Dempster. He finishes it off by mentioning that he believes Wood would be the better bet to get signed before the Nov. 13th exclusive negotiating window ends.

- In a separate article, van Dyck says the Cubs have some interest in Raul Ibanez.

- To add to the fun, Peavy has added the Anaheim Angels and New York Yankees to his list of teams he'd consider waiving his no-trade clause. It does say that Peavy would still prefer one of the 5 N.L. teams he originally listed - Houston, St. Louis, Chicago, Atlanta or Los Angeles.

- Chris DeLuca at the Sun-Times throws the Cubs hat in the CC sweepstakes if he doesn't resign with the Brewers. Greg Maddux is currently leaning towards retirement as well.

no one cares about ben sheets :( i think the only good thing about all this is it **SEEMS** the cubs are gonna end up with 1 of dumpster/peavy/cc/sheets...or at least you'd imagine given how much importance is being placed on replacing (or retaining) dumpster. hope a hard-throwing harden shows up this spring. he had a decent end-run, but damn he was low on velocity in the playoffs. hope Z is healthy and effective, too.

I think that Sheets is probably going to wind up with a 1 year with options contract that vests with innings. When your team is in the playoffs for the first time in 25 years and you get reduced to glorified bat selector, that's not a good sign. Again, not a good fit for the Cubs, unless we're confident that Atkins can do a reasonable impression of a MLB starter next year.

Eyre does say "Don't say it so loud" or something like that, but doesn't he also say "Hear, hear" right after Jenkins speaks? I felt bad about the way that Stevie Eyre left, but you got your ring dude. Shut the fuck up now.

and pinella earned it. the guy had his suck, he took it like a man...he had his injury, he took it like a man...then he returned and wasn't played. there was a point where he was warmed up 5+ times in a row over a week+ without even entering a game. he got up to work...he wasn't used. guy isn't god's gift to pitching, but he was being shafted like hell by not even seeing work in blowouts, losses, or anything at all. that said...who cares? it's just words. heh...

Argh. It pains me how perfect the situation is set up for the Cubs to snatch Peavy now. Yes, they don't really have the prospects but Towers doesn't seem to care. Give 'em Pie, Cedeno, Hill, Marshall, and Ceda or anybody else and walk away happy. I, for one, would still try to re-sign Dempster and then unload Marquis on anyone that'll take him. After his decent year this year, someone will. By Friday, the Braves will have decided to trade Hanson, Schafer, or Escobar and it'll be over.

I think it would be stupid to let Dempster walk. He's probably not going to win any Cy Youngs, but he's a quality pitcher we can get without giving up any prospects. Of course I'd like Peavy as well, but at least with Dempster it's only money the Cubs are giving up.

Burnett opts out Pavano and Giambi had their options declined Scott Olsen being actively shopped around by the Marlins.

should add that they've always had interest in Felix Pie, so a solid defensive CF option is likely as well.

As I've mentioned before, I can't image a deal that doesn't involve Samardzija, Marmol and Soto and I don't think any 3 of them are available.

I don't see Vitters being involved, nor should he, way too much upside there and too far from the majors to waste in a packaged deal right now.

3/36 supposedly offered to Dempster by the Cubs... Braves have contacted his agent. http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/ajc/braves/entries/2008/1… Braves have also talked to DEMPSTER’s agent, not surprising because I know how much Bobby likes him and Frank Wren has known him since they were both with Marlins. People I talked to seem to think Dempster will go back to Chicago, that he just wants to see what’s out there to make sure he’s not taking a far lesser deal (Cubs offered three years, $36 mill) to stay in Chicago. But he loves it there and he’s likely to re-sign.

i was blown away confused/pissed when it was announced the cubs were trading for y.almonte.

i was thrilled when m.busch was announced as part of the trade.

it's really weird to have the "you gotta take this payroll guy, too" (1.9m) part of the trade leak before the main piece.

the cubs didn't get a deal given what they gave up, but i was very happy to have a guy like busch in the fold with so much club control.

Have to admit I was initially disappointed the Cubs traded away the upside of Jackson Ferris but Busch is making a believer out of me.  If I still lived in midwest guessing we would have invented some drink special named a Busch Bomb at the local drinking establishment to celebrate his homers.

suzuki says he injured his oblique running to 1st, not swinging.  okay.  it's gonna be that kind of 2024 cubs year, huh?

i would say that's good news compared to screwing it up swinging, but i'm not familiar with the recovery time of people screwing up their oblique by running.

right side is at least different from his left side oblique injury last year.

A bit more Jewish take on one of my favorite Cubs, Kenny Holtzman. His 9-0 season while serving in the National Guard and being available to pitch on weekends was one of my coolest teen recollections.

Suzuki out with oblique strain. Canario indeed is called up. No word on Morel so that might be a red herring (or a red digit).

AZ lineup is posted but Counsell is always late to post his lineup.
