Saturday Funnies: Rizzo's Monster Homer

Well, that was an impressive homer.
Easy to mistake it for something else...

Nice.

Thanks and Happy Saturday, John.

AWESOME, hahahahahaha long way to go for that one CubbyBlue. Love it!

well played sir...

g.cole vs the cubs lineup...

...and the cubs take a 1 run lead...and for some f'n reason rizzo sureholds is sent to 3rd and rizzo home (running from 1st) and is thrown out by 4-5 steps at home for the 2nd out.

at least sureholds is on 3rd...though it should be 2nd/3rd sureholds/rizzo with 1 out.

can we quit with this aggressive baserunning already?

s.baker throwing steady 88mph fastballs, btw....87-89 range. hit 90mph with his 18th pitch of the game.

slider ranging around 82mph...heavy fastball mix, though.

lot of fly outs through the 3rd...working 88-90 range as the game goes on...still heavily favoring the fastball.

The glove is really popping though. If I didn't see the gun, I'd say they were all 95 mph. Seriously ... weird.

10 outs recorded in the OF via popup out of 15 so far after 5ip.

65 pitches...2h 0bb 4K

Weird how the kids were killing him in A-ball and now he looks like a serviceable MLB pitcher again all of a sudden. No change in velocity or anything, either. Small sample size, etc., but WTF?

*shrug* who knows...

also, 2 more fly outs to the OF + a HR.

tie game after 6.

...and baker is done after 6...pinch hit for w/ navarro with 1 out, men on 2nd/3rd...and he strikes out.

6ip 3h 0bb 4k, 1 r/er ...75 pitches

...and russell gives up a solo HR with his 3rd pitch in relief.

awesome job, bro.

One thing about the Cubs is they seem a bit more competitive this year than last. I can't think of many games they haven't been in. There HAVE been a fair number of games that they've been in if you only look at the box score, but haven't really been in, I guess, because they have been so inept on offense, especially the first half of the year. But really, if I'm a contender, I know that it's not an automatic W with this team. My biggest concern with the Sveum era now that he's got almost 2 years under his belt is that his team has a habit of finding ways to lose.

As a Cub fan I would more likely believe it was drone due to the infrequency of Rizzo homeruns.

22 HRs not bad for an age-23-season player, especially one who also hits so many hard line drives. Don't hate for no reason.

And 35 doubles or so, good for 5th in the league. Plenty to work on, but you're right, we need to keep it in perspective with his age.

Also, if you bump his BABIP up to .300, his batting average goes to .275. Considering how hard he hits the ball, that's not unreasonable at all. So a large part of what we've seen this year in terms of batting average is just plain bad luck.

Everybody wants instant gratification. They want Manny Machado, so they complain about loopy swings from a 23 year old first baseman who beat cancer, and a subpar season from a shortstop who started his career with some serious awesomeness for his age. This is a good year for these guys to work through their shit. It's not like they've got veteran stars sandwiching them in the lineup. I understand the frustration of being a Cubs fan as well as anybody, but really?

Fox has blessed us with Thom Brenneman for the Bears game...lovely.

no-hitter through 5 for Liriano...Cubs no-hit streak in jeopardy.

Lake single in 7th ends it and Welington hits a HR to tie it.

w.balentien finally breaks Oh's japanese HR record.

these days managers/players are more prone to let "outsiders" go for it by not pitching around them or intentionally walking them for no reason.

the fans loved it. his mom was in attendance at the game, btw.

he did it 1 better with his 57th HR later in the game...he's got 41 more HR on his team than lastings milledge, who's the #2 best HR hitter on the team.

...he's got 17 more games (if he plays them all) to blow the record out of the water.

Sign him!!!!

On a completely unrelated note, this Trestman fellow seems to know what he's doing. One sack in two weeks? And that sack was really on Cutler, not the O-line. For the last few years I've been practically begging for an offensive line. Nice to see a little imagination on play calling, too, and (slaps forehead) - short passes by Cutler. It's almost like watching NFL football.

You did not "practically" beg, you actually begged.

This should have happened two years ago when Lovie went 9-7.

It took shit-canning of top personnel to realize the team needed to get their offense into the 21st Century.

What is going to be problemmatic as the season goes on this year, is the absence of a formidible pass-rush with just four up front. Yu do not see this in the Championship-caliber teams.

I am optimistic, however, that they can score enough points this year to keep them in most games.

Haha, you are right, I did actually. I guess I'm kinda hoping that Peppers isn't slowing down as much as it looks so far. In other words, I'm hoping he's got some nagging but not major injury that hasn't been reported. A spunky Peppers goes a long way to a good front four. Yesterday T Jennings saved the game, in my opinion. So far, teams really are pretty much just willfully marching up and down the field on these guys.

my prediction for the season was that Bears would be far more exciting on offense at the expense of their defense....it'll be far more fun to watch, but I'm not sure if the end result will be much different this year.

If they can go 6-1 into the bye, time to get excited.

@ Steelers, @ Lions, vs. Saints, vs. Giants, @ Redskins then the bye

Schedule isn't easy at any point beyond an away game versus Cleveland in December. Not that they get any world-beaters in there, but certainly a bunch of teams that could beat them or they could beat.

It would not surprise me if they went 3-2 in the games you posted. If you saw the Giants game last night, they are beatable (although the Payton-run Bronco offense was like watching Gene Kelly go nuts - artistry in motion).

all those teams are beatable, they're also all capable of beating the Bears especially at home (Lions and Steelers)...well maybe not the Redskins...they look something awful right now. Defense hasn't stopped anyone and offense just scoring during garbage time.

So everything after the Bengals went up 21-10 in game 1 was garbage time? My thought is if that were the case, the Bengals would have won, then. TD to win with 0:10 left in game 2 is garbage time? Somehow we see things differently.

I was talking about the Redskins in regards to garbage time.

Bears offense has been good beyond the turnovers.

Now I got it. Me slow? Unpossible.

As I mentioned to E-man, teams are marching up and down the field on the Bears pretty much at will. E-man is right about the front four - they need to get better if there is any hope for a championship. I would still say that they could easily win every game that you list there. But because of the way the defense looks right now, they could also lose every one. So that's a problem.

If they go 7-1 they are almost guaranteed a playoff spot!!!!

~oops~

sorry if old news...Cubs sign NC State catcher Danny Canela, was named rookie of the year of the Frontier League

http://www.examiner.com/article/frontier-league-roy-signs-with-cubs

37th round draft pick of Tigers in 2009

sounds like he's got some talent, but work ethic issues, NC State dropped him before his senior year, was suppose to be their cleanup hitter

http://network.yardbarker.com/author/article_external/14528230?widget=true

he was being pushed out of C by brett austin...when he learned he was going to be a part time player he transfered to Lee University...though he probably would have been a regular DH when he wasn't catching. it did not help at all that he blew off "voluntary" fall practice last year.

btw, he killed it @ Lee...but that's not hard...it's a minor conference. .335/.443 avg/ob%...7hr...16 doubles...40bb/19k...218ab. he did even better in the frontier league...which is promising since he was using a wood bat there.

he's a rather crummy defensive catcher, fwiw.

also...while his work ethic (and conditioning, aka body weight) may be questioned, he was known to be good around his teammates and fans...so it's doubtful he's a head case.

tonight's ATL/WAS game postponed, fwiw.

For "the safety of [the] fans" ... which no one actually believes, since the incident was isolated and ceased several hours ago.

More likely to be respectful to the relatives of those who lost someone ... but is playing a game at 1 pm tomorrow really more respectful than playing at 7pm today? Maybe, I dunno, I just feel like the only reason they canceled was to avoid catching PR flak. And surely there are media types who would've crucified MLB and the Nats if they played. But really, as if tomorrow is way more respectful and/or safe than tonight? Meh.

they're also staging some stuff at the ballpark...victim and lockdown family waiting, some services, etc...plus i imagine travel in/around the area isn't very easy right now.

...but yeah, "the safety of the fans" is some b/s...though technically there is a 2nd person of interest, though it's believed that 2nd dude is the guy who's ID was used to obtain access rather than being some witnessed 2nd gunman.

  • kuhl is a righty, not a lefty.

i think maddon might think kuhl is a lefty, too. i wonder what the reasoning is for baez leading off vs a rightie.

  • "trout's one of the best, and at this point should probably win over donaldson (and should have more MVPs in the past, too), but the defensive aspect of valuing WAR still needs more tweaking...imo."

that's from my 1st post. there's no suck involved in that. maybe with a few less posts about bullshit that point would have jumped out more.

  • crunch - you do know that, taking defense out of the equation, Trout has led the AL in wRC+ each of those years, right?

And, if you want to complain about position adjustment (which would be serious #crunchsplaining), he's been in the top 3 in the AL in WC (not park/league/position adjusted). And the only players ahead of him (if there were any players ahead of him) in any of those years have been DHs or 1B that play lousy defense.

But sure - Trout sucks (or at least isn't as good as WAR says). Because it factors in defense and position.

  • early tim tebow stuff rolling in...

ran a 6.7 60yd (above average)...shagging flies in RF and showed off a rather impressive arm a few times, but average-at best on most of his throws...hit a few over the fence (both fields), fouled or weak contact a few...he's got a touch of power

it'll be interesting to see who bites on this project, if anyone. he probably projected himself out of RF and into LF/1st because of his arm, but unless he can make that power work on a steady basis it'll be hard for him to play himself up anyone's system.

  • LHP Clayton Richard (released by the Cubs earlier this month) is pitching very well as a starting pitcher for the San Diego Padres and could be a good candidate to get traded to a contender looking for a veteran SP before tomorrow night's post-season roster eligibility deadline.

Because they released him, the Cubs are paying most of Richard's 2016 salary (the Cubs are on the hooks for $2M, minus the pro-rated portion of the MLB minimum salary that is paid by the Padres).

  • it is honestly awesome (for real) that anyone would even have a strong opinion on AZL playoffs. i guess if you invest enough time watching it, you want to see a fair/just playoff structure.

    plus, the kids deserve it.

crunch 8 hours 49 min ago view
  • The AZL team with the best record over the course of the full 2016 AZL season and the only AZL team to play .600 ball (the AZL Dodgers) did not qualify for the AZL playoffs, and the AZL East Division team with the best record over the course of the full season (the AZL Athletics) did not qualify for the AZL playoffs, either.

That's because of the ridiculous "split season" schedule most of the minor leagues now play, a stupid system that rewards mediocrity at the expense of the worthy.

  • Despite good movement on his fastball, I think location kept him from getting Ks. Left some pitches up and away that got hammered up and away. Then of course Travis Wood gave up the 2-run double in the 7th, but both runs counted against Arrieta.

    Have a nice day.
