Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up

- Rosenthal says the Braves are growing impatient and may pull their offer by Friday when free agency opens up. USA Today says "one team" is demanding a resolution by the 14th (let's take a guess on which team).  Rosenthal goes on to say the Padres have sent counter-offers to the Cubs and Braves, although he doesn't think either team will up the ante. In terms of players involved, he mentions Sean Marshall and possibly Josh Vitters.

- Sullivan thinks the Cubs are offering about 4/50 to Dempster right now.

- The Toronto Globe and Mail thinks Dempster is pretty likely to stay a Cub and says he'll take a discount if the Cubs acquire Peavy.

UPDATE: Buster Olney says the Cubs and Padres are trying to get a 3rd team involved and that Josh Vitters might be in play. I'd be surprised if the Cubs dealt Vitters or Samardzija myself, but you never know.

Can we have the old Rich Hill back? A Z, Peavy, Demp, '07 Hill, Lilly rotation would be alright. Of course they won't score any runs in the playoffs, so who gives a shit.

What happens to Harden? I'm sorry, I should know this, but I've tried to think about the Cubs as little as possible the last two months.

Anyone think if Cubs get Dempster and Peavy they will flip Harden for a lefty bat?

unless it's a bat of epic proportions then no thanks

I drool over the thought of

Peavy
Z
Harden
Dempster
Lilly

That right there is a 110 win season.

if by some miracle, we do get Peavy and Dempster, the thought of Peavy, Harden, Z, Dempster, Lilly would be pretty damn exciting, but you have to wonder about the Marquis situation.

It's a good bet the Cubs would have to shed some salary for at least one-left handed bat and Marquis would be a lot harder to move than Harden and would get you much less in a trade. On top of that, you have to wonder about rotation stability. Assuming you've traded at least Marshall and possibly another starter, you've got a lot of guys in the rotation that our injury risks. Who steps in when they go down withouth Marshall and let's say Atkins or whatever.

We'd still have Gaudin and they could sign Lieber or something like him again and I'll assume Samardzija isn't getting traded and there's always Rich Hill, but the pitching staff could fall apart quickly. And I think it's a safe bet that if the Cubs got Peavy and Dempster that Harden wouldn't be resigned after this year.

Now I'm not advocating it, I'd love to see them move Marquis and roll the dice with that kind of talent, but it's certainly something to think about. And Harden would definitely be the best trading chip we have.

We too drool over the thought of...

Lilly
Peavy
Z
Harden
Dempster

Ted,

I would put Lilly ahead of Harden based on durability.

I just drool a lot, no matter what the occasion.

I love the idea of getting swept in October by scores of 1-0, 2-0, 1-0.
They ask if it could get worse, well yeah, that is worse.

Baseball Prospectus has their top 11 Cubs prospects:

The rest of the content in the link is subscriber only.

Hoffpauir a 2-star prospect? unpossible...he's s every bit as good as Derrek Lee and would never, ever hit into a double play.

Anyone think there is something to the Padres withdrawing their offer to Hoffman? Like maybe they are getting a potential power arm to try at closer from the Cubs, i.e. Samninja or Ceda? Or someone from the Braves? Or maybe its nothing.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-padres-ho...

it's just them cutting costs....

Espn 1000 Bruce Levine is reporting Padres and Braves have "two pieces in place to complete trade," but Cubs still might have a chance.

Olney said the same thing in his article...

Thought so too

My bad

No BP love for Casey Lambert or Mitch Atkins?

There isn't anybody on Baseball Prospectus' list or combination thereof that I wouldn't trade for Peavy. Samardzija has the NTC, and Cashner/Flaherty can't be traded until after June 15th or whenever the June draft is held this year.

Lincecum gets the NL CY

Lincecum, Webb, Johan, Lidge, CC, Dempster was the final vote...

probably would have flipped Johan and Webb myself, Dempster got 4 3rd place votes

please oh please

The Jake Peavy to the Cubs rumors will not die, and today they took a turn for the interesting.
A source within the Padres organization claims that it’s “basically a done deal” (whatever basically means) that Peavy is headed to Chicago, and that the Cubs will send back Felix Pie, Sean Marshall and Ryan Theriot.
Is this one of those “I know a guy, who knows a guy” deals? Yes, that’s exactly what it is. So I have no idea if it’s true. All I can say is that the “source” is a guy who actually should know.

and from the comments..

The source of this rumor reports to Kevin Towers directly. Nope, not Masur or Vasgersian.

the Cubs will send back Felix Pie, Sean Marshall and Ryan Theriot.

Oh my... that would be incredible.

Interesting. That would seem to seriously conflict with today's rumors about the Braves having pieces in place, but perhaps they ended up asking for too much. I have a bad feeling though this will be akin to the '05 blog from some dude that Furcal signs with the Cubs, only to have him sign with the Dodgers the next day.

Rob, I'm guessing the "please oh please" is more about shedding Theriot than acquiring Peavy? :)

"the '05 blog from some dude that Furcal signs with the Cubs"

As long as WSCR George Offman is not reporting it, it could be true.

yup, trading Theriot means they're planning to sign Furcal would be my guess...

I give that rumor about a 1% shot of having any truth to it, because I don't think the Cubs would move Theriot w/o knowing for sure about Furcal and they haven't been able to talk money yet and there's a good 4-5 teams that are interested in him.

And the fact that is a shitty deal for the Padres....

Could be Padres are releasing this to scare Braves into action.

If the Theriot gets traded they better sign Furcal asap. Ronny the Retard for 160 a games will not be pleasant.

not sure the Padres would use Andy Dolan of desipio.com to float a rumor to get the Braves to pony up. 99.8% chance no one in the Braves has heard of it....

99.8?

Would the Cubs trade Theriot if they Greene back in the deal somehow? They'd make a run at Furcal, sure, but Greene would be the back up plan.

Of course, perhaps the deal is "basically" done except for the little detail that Hendry still has to find a third party to get involved to send more pitching to SD.

Could it mean Ronny Cedeno at Short? Or maybe Khalil Green is coming this way?

Lets hope we never see the 'Ronny Cedeno era' as the starting shortstop, Greene has really declined lately but he'd be a way better option than Cedeno.

Realistically we have nothing to offer pitching wise (exception Szamarja or Harden) compared to the Braves. If this deal gets done with pie, marshall and theriot then it's silly not to take it. I wonder if Giles will be in this deal to shed all of their salary...find this third team...what else would we be giving up?

There is no way we are getting rid of Marquis and his 9mil this year if this deal gets done. In all honestly they should let Dempster walk this was his best year by far when you compared it to his past. He's not worth the 12-15 he may get on the open market. If you can get a good deal on Wood then go for it but he's also not worth 12-15 per year.

Peavy
Z
Harden
Lilly
Marquis or Hill (in my prayers)

Any body have details on Hill in the Venezuela league..he's getting hammered. Don't count on him to do anything.

It should be interesting.

His source at Cubs-

No chance for Dempster resigning, he wants 5/85

Wood gone also, Tampa very interested

Peavy trade needs third team(duh), Peavy needed because of no Dempster

~grain of salt~

He probably means no re-signing before Thursday. It'd be stupid for Dempster to rule out the Cubs now.

The way he was saying it was the Cubs would not pay 5/85 for Dempster, which is what he's supposedy is asking for.

Yeah, but I doubt any team is going to pony up that kind of cash off one good year as a starter. Maybe his agent is having delusions of Boras. He may ask for that, but I doubt he gets it.

$17M a year for Dempster is...well....um...not wise.

Roll the dice with Samardzija in the rotation and go pay for Furcal and RFer.

I agree.

And I can't understand the whole he will take a cut in pay to pitch with Peavy is mind boggling. I mean it's not Bball or Football and that they will be on the field again.

Then again he's Canadian.

Or just keep Marquis. I'd probably trust him over Samardzija for a year. Never thought I'd say that.

I'd do the Peavy deal pretty much under any circumstances, Vitters might hurt a little but I'll take a pitcher with Cy Young stuff over a prospect.

Kerry Wood's got Cy Young stuff...

that and Peavy actually has won one.

So Randy Johnson would be better than Peavy?

if it was 28 year old Randy Johnson, then yes.

The difference is that Jake Peavy has Cy Young stuff and has one one. Meaning that he's put up the numbers deserving of a Cy Young award and will probably continue to show his Cy Young stuff.

Kerry Wood will not put up Cy Young numbers nor will Randy Johnson.

Why are you trying to pick this nit when you God Damned well what he's trying to say?

Because I think Peavy is a disaster waiting to happen for whichever team trades for him. You can see the Braves are not willing to discuss their two 'five star prospects' but the Cubs, in theory are. That doesn't make sense.

Winter Leagues

Rich Hill ERA 6.28 IN-14.1 Hits 15 13BB 9

Angel Guzman - ERA 2.08 In 13 H14 K- 8 BB-3

I've read in a couple places now about maybe Adam Dunn to the Cubs. Can he even play RF? He sure can't play LF worth a damn, but if he has a strong arm (I don't know, does he?), there's no reason he'd be any worse in RF than in LF, right?

He would certainly address the Cubs' age-old need for a LH power bat in the middle of the order. If they signed him, I imagine he would be the heir apparent at 1B once Lee's contract is over.

Final question, this one about Brian Roberts. Would the Orioles at all be interested in Mark DeRosa as part of a Roberts trade? I wonder if the Cubs could put together trade packages for BOTH Peavy and Roberts; I'm not convinced the Cubs have enough quality young players, but maybe DeRosa would help them get it done.

If the Cubs DID somehow acquire Peavy, Roberts and Dunn, I'm buying my World Series tickets right now.

The Cubs already have two heir apparents for first base in Ramirez and Soriano.

I am not sure about Dunn's arm. He was a college QB, so it wouldn't surprise me if it's playable, though I don't know why the Reds wouldn't have played him in right. The other option would be to move Soriano to right (or center), but his arm is a little short for that.

ive heard this Dunn/Cubs/RF crap, too.

yes, pinella will play guys in RF who have no business there, but not regularly (thankfully).

dunn can barely play LF and his arm is clunky. hell, he can barely play 1st.

Right field has the fewest plays.

but generally requires the best arm.

having said this, Dunn was a college qb. I bet his arm is better that we think

dunn's arm isn't that bad, but it's not good or accurate. he's also battled off/on soreness with his throwing arm almost yearly.

much like the entire package that is adam dunn he's got an amazing set of tools he applies really oddly.

it makes me wonder how good of a player he could be if he actually liked the game as much as some other players out there. there's more than a few that think dunn could use a clemens meets schilling lockerroom "talk" to get him into the game more.

  • IMO Jake is really the key to winning the World Series, but maybe I'm putting too much emphasis on one player.

  • The reports that they offered EITHER Jimenez or Torres for Chapman are a little disconcerting. I hope 1) Those reports are wrong, and 2) if they are not wrong, that they will hold on to him, as the team could use the outfield depth. I have only seen him in the futures game, but he looks like a keeper.

  • Very nice. I saw him in Lansing in May. I'm still stunned that he hit a 400-foot foul ball onto Larch Street ... which is going the other way for a right-handed batter. It was perhaps the most amazing swing I've ever seen a minor league player take. I should also mention that it was about 40 degrees out at the time. Not that it's evidence of anything per se, but I feel his plate approach is way more advanced than Soler was at this stage in his development and that the comparisons aren't really fair to Jimenez. 50/50 chance I'll go to Midland tonight for the low-A debut of Oscar de la Cruz.

  • Eloy Jimenez grand slam tonight. Hoping Soler power returns and gets hot but future looks bright in the outfield regardless.

Finished the night 4-5, with two doubles - 32(!) on the season - along with the grand slam. Sick

  • Meanwhile, out West:

SF is 2-11 since the break, lead over LA is down to one game, and they are running out Cain and Peavy this weekend against the Nats. Challenging times by the Bay.

  • The Cubs have released RHRP Scott Frazier (2013 7th round dfraft pick - Pepperdine).

A Cubs pitching coach told me in Spring Training 2014 that he thought Frazier had the best pure stuff in the organization. Absolutely electric fastball & breaking ball combo. Other pitchers would gather behind the screen just to watch him throw "live" BP. That's how amazing he was.

  • Got a chance to see Diamondbacks RHSP Zack Greinke (15-day DL - strained oblique) throw a rehab start at Sloan Park Friday night. Four of the first seven AZL Cubs hitters singled and the Cubs did score an unearned run in the bottom of the 1st inning, but then Greinke got serious and struck out five in a row.

    ZACK GREINKE: 3.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R (0 ER), 0 BB, 5 K, 4/0 GO/AO, 49 pitches (34 strikes)

  • Have fun - It may be good for Arrieta to be facing a team that doesn't know him as well as the NL teams. A nice shutout would do wonders for his confidence. He is confident in public but baseball is hard and he could use a boost, I'm sure.
