I've always attributed the incredible success of Cubs' starting pitchers who were traded (Dempster, Maholm, Garza, Feldman) to the fact that there was no pressure the last couple of years, but is it possible that Bosio is just a really great pitching coach?

regression to the mean, moving to tougher divisions, maybe Bosio a little. I think the effect of working with a catcher and staff over spring training should not be underestimated.

Maholm did a little better after being traded for the rest of 2012, fell back in 2013 but that should have been expected.

Own a piece of the Cubs to pay for Wrigley renovations, said to be considering selling minority shares to finance renovations. Also won't start until they're assured they won't get sued.

Kenney told reporters the Ricketts family is “prepared to write the whole check themselves” if the Cubs would be treated like the other 29 big-league clubs, allowed to put up advertising signage where they want and given more flexibility to schedule night games.

I have my doubts on that claim.

Anywhoo...as the article states, plenty of teams (Cardinals and Giants to name 2) have multiple owners.

Personally not that happy about Olt platooning. I don't know if that's the long term plan or if it's still his healing arm/defense. But if he sits out against righties as a general rule, I will be bummed. And I like Valbuena. But I'm guessing a player like Olt with good power needs to play to find rhythm and comfort.

Jesse Rogers from ESPN kinda laid into Renteria about that. Welcome to Chicago, happy man. But I agree with both of you. Power hitters have a tendency to overswing as it is, and it just makes it that much harder when you're a rookie. He needs his reps, or he should go back down. And like Rogers said in his article - I have no interest in watching the likes of Sweeney and Valbuena. Nothing against Valbuena but he is a journeyman, and so is Sweeney. If we have to wait, and we do, then make us wait with the kids playing not journeymen. I hope this is not a Renteria trend. Maybe Junior Lake turns into a bust, but let's find out.

Well I'm definitely gonna give Renteria a lot of leeway in my own head but I do hope he doesn't fall into that trap a lot of managers do of giving vets playing time because they are vets. Olt is going to take his lumps, he may even be a bust. Same with Lake. I just don't want to watch journeymen instead of kids. If it's all a FAIL, I'd rather watch kids.

What I hope Renteria is doing is trying to give Olt, especially after the atrocious season he had last year, some early season confidence. Playing him when he has the best opportunity to succeed and then gradually give him tougher at bats once he is more settled. While I agree playing the kids everyday would personally be more entertaining in the short term; maybe Renteria and the Cubs front office don't believe the "sink or swim" method is the best long term development strategy for Olt.

At least we get to watch Olt sit on the bench and Lake too. I'm wondering if TheoJed are gonna have to trade Valbuena and Sweeney (ala Bean/Moneyball) to get Olt/Lake some pt? Neither strikes me as a lefty killer for fuck's sake. They're not gonna get better or tested without seeing any live pitching. And a late inning at bat here and there for Olt ... He's not a journeyman pinch hitter. He needs 4-5 at bats a game to get in a rhythm. If anything Rent is setting him up for failure.

Renteria pinch hits Olt for the pitcher against a rightie with nobody on base in the 6th inning of a 1 run game? What happens if they bring in a leftie reliever later in the game? He's managing like a little league manager who's trying to keep everyone happy and get people at bats.

DAVID: I believe the Cubs are on the road on Friday, but even if they are there should be plenty going on at the UAPC Friday morning. The players who don''t make the road trip will probably play a "sim" game, with several pitchers (possibly some rehab guys) throwing in the game.

No guarantees, of course.

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

    It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

    The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

    cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

    oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

    i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

    he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

    CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately. 

    You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.  

    Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
