Cardinals @ Cubs: Lackey vs. Hammel (Game 167; NLDS Game 4)

The Cubs set a postseason record with 6 HRs to pick up their ace. Now let’s win it at home.

STL: RHP John Lackey
CHC: RHP Jason Hammel
First pitch: 3:37pmCT

Hammel last pitched on Oct. 1, when he won in Cincinnati (5 IP, 0 ER). At Wrigley this year, he went 3-3 with a 3.99. He’s 1-1 with a 5.73 in three games against St. Louis this year, and they are batting .244 against him in those games. The one game against the Cardinals at Wrigley came on July 8, when he left after an inning because of a hamstring tweak. Overall, the Cards are 41-127 (.323) against him: Heyward is 9-18, Peralta is 9-23 with 2 HR, Holliday is 4-11. Hammel is 0-1 with a 4.80 is 4 postseason appearances.

Lackey is back on short rest in the elimination game. He beat the Cubs on Friday in Game One against Lester in St. Louis (7.1 IP, 0 ER). The Cubs are 34-121 (.281) against him. Coghlan is 8-17, Soler (who has stopped making outs) is 4-8.

Go Cubs!

Just to remember how far we have come: last year's opening day lineup was Bonifacio, Lake, Castro, Rizzo, Olt, Castillo, Schierholz, Barney, and Samardzija. It's been a fun ride this year!

No idea what will happen. The Cards are the Cards and they have come back from 2-1 holes twice in the last 4 years, so I don't see them in panic mode at all. If anything, I expect the Cubs to be pressing more than the Cards today. I want the Cubs to win because it would be great for the city, and great for the fans. But more than anything, I want the Cubs to win so I can see this team play for at least one more week this year. Never enjoyed watching a team more than this year.

Yes. Unfortunately, as many of us, I have seen this movie before. Do not care for Hammel, and unlike other managers Joe will pull the plug quickly at least. I hope before things were to get out of hand. Many of us are like "abused spouses" or whatever - with this Cubs stuff. You get hurt so many times, the trust rapidly erodes. If the Cubs can get to Lackey early, its gonna be a big key to a W or L.

Well, at least it took Hammel 2 batters to give up a first inning run. Worst nightmare realized in under 3 minutes.

Mornington_Crescent joined. Carlos_RM: This Piscotty fellow... Carlos_RM: He's not likeable Mornington_Crescent left.

JAVY "BAE"Z I LOVE YOU JUST... THIS SEASON. WOW.

Don't think I've ever seen a crowd go that crazy for a K to end the 4th inning. This is going to be a long, crazy, afternoon.

Pretty good pitch by Cahill that Cruz hit, though throwing a breaking ball in the dirt seems like a better option in retrospect.

Phil: Great to see what Rosario is doing!

Do you think having Rosario may have influenced/impacted the front office's decision on including Hope in the trade for Busch at all?

it's so crazy we got a new "barnstorming" harlem globetrotters-type baseball product that was introduced less than 5 years ago and is wildly popular all over the nation.

a notion left long in the past, unearthed, polished for modern audiences and popular as ever.

No question right now Alfonsin Rosario is one of the Cubs Top 20 prospects (probably Top 15). Rosario is to the Cubs what Zyhir Hope is to the Dodgers.

The Savannah Bananas will be playing the Party Animals at Sloan Park in Mesa this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The games are sold out (15,000+ each night), and berm tickets are going for well over $100.

RAISIN: In the game versus the A's at Fitch Park last Friday, Mule threw half FB and half SL (16/16), and one CH (which coincidentally was the only hard-hit ball off him -- a near HR line-drive double off the LF fence). FB was 91-94 and the SL (really more of a "slurve") was 80-82, and he got three swing & miss on each pitch (six swing & miss total out of his 20 strikes). So I think it is safe to say that right now, Mule is strictly a two-pitch pitcher (FB/SL),

Recalled it was sampled in a Nas song.  Did a little sleuthing.  It was a Nas song called "Hate Me Now" that featured Puff Daddy.  Imploring the crowd to hate somebody seems a bit overly dramatic for a keyboardist but perhaps there is some other connection to the song.

In general there has been a weird overuse of Carmina Burana's O Fortuna in sports and commercials in past decade or so.  Maybe it is a fallback choice if there isn't anything else.

Sidenote, while the O Fortuna part has become a bit pop-culture cliched; the overall piece is very interesting and rather expansive in scope. I played percussion in a production of it while in college.  There is a rather jovial movement set in a tavern.  In the score it calls for the clinking of beer steins.  Let's just say we did a lot of research to determine the best sounding beer steins.

ooof...this is just as likely as anything.  professional organists are weird humans.

Maybe it is only played when the hitter thus far in the game is "oh for two"-na at the plate?

who was AB when it was being played?  it could be something as corny as playing it for nick fortes because fortes/fortuna...fortes...marlins...fish...tuna...sigh.

while the cubs organ player isn't a frequent groaner weaponizing the organ song selection, they all dabble in it.
