Friday Funnies. Don't freak out about Cubs wins and losses in ST.

Inspired by some of the comments here yesterday.
And my own knee-jerk reactions to the letter "L".

Comments

.227 I ran a correlation for team win record for the last 3 years, ST & regular season and found an r value of .227. There is nearly no correlation between spring training records and regular season records. Science.

it varies depending on the use/application, but most people don't even pay attention to correlation until you get a r value of .7 or more (.7 being the top of the moderate positive or bottom of the strong positive in most applications). in my industry, you need a .8 or a .9 before it gets the attention of most anyone.

hey look, you're back AGAIN to blah blah blah something i did that's irritating and i'm worse than hitler, etc... let's take a look at my last post on the issue... "cubs fall to 1-8 this spring. no, it's still not a big deal. also, schwarb left the game with a sore left knee...not expected to be serious." hey, how about that. lookie there. check that out. isn't that neat. cool, huh? wow. killer. awesome. once again, can we move on from this "thing"?

Damn, your right, let's look at just your last post on this issue. That is internet law. Nothing you said before that about wins and losses, Maddon's antics, Lester's defense, etc. counts at all. Your right. That's the law of internet comments. I screwed up. Those seven words buried in your last post erase all of the bitching you have been doing for two weeks. If I had seen your last comment, I would have realized that and followed the law. It's all my fault. I saw another one of your stupid Obama comments (still don't understand those) and didn't read past that part, so I never even saw it. Again, my fault. And this "thing" that I have? You represent about 25% of our comments on here. Do you realize that? 13 of the last 50 by my count, and that's fairly normal. It wouldn't be bad if they were constructive. But they are typically gems like: "i know it's spring training, but let’s dispel once and for all with this fiction that barack obama doesn’t know what he’s doing. he knows exactly what he’s doing"--I have no idea what that means or why you think it is funny or clever. Seriously. No idea. This is not Fox News or MSNBC. I come here to get away from politics. Or they are links to a picture of the cast of a TV show from the 1980s with no explanation. Clicking on that link wasted my time. Seriously, again, what the hell does that mean? What's the purpose of it? So that's my "thing." And you can commence with your sarcastic and hyperbolic response that insults me and says that I pick on you, etc. That's fine. I just know that you can't move on from this "thing" that you have with me.

so...let's look at every post...all 2 of them. we have the 2nd. "i know it's just spring, but the cubs are finding new and exciting ways to lose every day. 1-7 so far." there's the 1st. that's some real damming commentary. i mean, really? you also seem to not like my joke about an old TV show or marco rubio. alright. i dunno what to do about this. you're probably going to be pissed in the future, too. i'll file that away and just let you vent because i seriously sure as hell can't tell when i'm gonna trigger you.

there it is! let’s dispel once and for all with this fiction that DUDE YOU ARE NOT HELPING THINGS HERE... also the cubs won, which we must remember doesn't matter, and miggy + vogelbomb hit homers that don't matter. that's your cubs nihilist update. enjoy the rest of your evening, or not.

Help! So we're going to be adding a Resources page. Let me know what you'd like to see up there, and we'll make it happen. We'll also have capacity for RSS feeds, so you'll never have to go anywhere for anything ever.* *Except for porn.

Ha! Terrific! As I mentioned previously, a "Daily Broadcast" display would be cool so we can see all the sources of feed for our beloved. Thanks!

Can you please elucidate on what you mean by a "Daily Broadcast?" I can pull in the top headlines on the Cubs from various sources, e.g, ESPN, MLB, etc... A list of desired feed sources would be helpful. Links to schedules are a given, but not certain what other links would be desirable.

...elucidate on what you mean... I thought that did not need further explanation. A list of feed sources. That is what I have said. And, its a reiteration of what I had requested (which CT STEVE rsponded to) a week ago. I.e.: Cubs vs. Reds, 3:05CT; MLB TV; FSN (1140 in Chicago); WGN 720; Playboy Channel; ESPNU; etc.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

Teheran minor league deal is done, per MLB.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."

Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Totally agree. The 26 man roster very rarely consists of the 13 best position players and 13 best pitchers.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
-give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

-Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?
