Update: He has a nasty bruise and will be out 3-5 days. Meanwhile, Szczur is back and Ramirez is DFA'd.
CHC (29-11): LHP Jon Lester (4-2, 1.88)
SF (25-19): RHP Matt Cain (0-5, 5.87)
First pitch: 6:15pmCST

Lester lost to the Pirates on Sunday (6.2 IP, 1 ER, 9 K, 2 BB), thanks to the fickle Cub offense, which managed only 1 run on 4 hits. Lester is 3-0 with a 0.92 on the road so far this year. For his career, these Giants are 16-67 (.239) against him. Posey is 4-11, and Span is 8-23.

Cain had a rough and abbreviated 2015 (2-4, 5.79 over 11 starts), which he’s in the process of repeating. He was effective in his last two starts (15 IP, 3 ER against AZ and TOR), however, so don’t be surprised if he reels off a good one. The Cubs are 28-126 (.222) against him. Bryant is 2-5 with a HR.

Hendricks (2-3, 3.51) versus Bumgarner (5-2, 2.45) on ESPN tomorrow at 7:05pmCST. Sorry, cordcutters.

1. Kind of strange to say this about a guy with a .611 OPS, but thank god he's ok and won't be going to the DL. What an incredible catch. The J Hey Kid. 2. What did I miss with Neil Ramirez? He was serviceable, wasn't he? I just remember him being put on the bereavement list abruptly, but then I didn't see him.

im just glad it's not his shoulder. he's already a weak hitter who's having issues this season...last thing he needs to deal with is something else screwing with his swing. no amount of great D in RF can make up for his bat losing any more value. a good part of his contract was based on his age, health, and the prospect of maybe returning more of the power he had years ago. hopefully he's not gonna be rushed and he's physically ready to come back so he's swinging without compensating/over-stressing other parts of his body.

I'm skeptical that a Ramirez DFA means Ramirez is done with the Cubs. Lots of walks this year, but also a ton of K's and still not quite 27, and not a free agent until 2021. Meanwhile the Cubs are still carrying around Clayton Richard and Travis Wood, both free agents at the end of the year. Could a DFA just give them more time to figure out a move they might like to make while also enjoying Szczur's services during the Heyward injury? I thought a team can retract a DFA'd player within 10 days. Seems like something AZ Phil could answer.

CHARLIE: The only time an MLB club can add a player back to its MLB 40-man roster after the player has been Designated for Assignment is during the MLB regular season when the player is Designated for Assignment for the purpose of removing the player from the 25-man roster while Optional Assignment Waivers are secured. 

For example, if Ramirez had minor league options left (he does not), he could have been Designated for Assignment for the period of time (47 hours) it takes to run a player through Optional Assignment Waivers (which are revocable if a claim is made, so players are almost never claimed off this type of waivers). Then he could be returned to the club's 40-man roster and optioned to the minors once Optional Assignment Waivers are secured AS LONG AS the club's MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) wasn't full when the player was Designated for Assignment AND the player's slot on the club's MLB 40-man roster wasn't taken by another player after the player was Designated for Assignment. But again, Ramirez has no minor league options left, so Optional Assignment Waivers do not apply here. 

Since Ramirez is out of minor league options, the Cubs have ten days to either trade him, send him outright to the minors, or release him. And before he can be sent outright to the minors, Outright Assignment Wivers would have to be secured, and unlike Optional Assignment Waivers, Outright Assignment Waivers are irrevocable (waiver request cannot be withdrawn if player is claimed). 

And while the Cubs technically have ten days to either trade him, outright him, or release him, they really only have eight days to trade him, because it takes two days to run a player through waivers, and so if he isn't traded by the 8th day of the DFA, the Cubs would have to place him on Outright Assignment Waivers at 2 PM (Eastern) on the 8th day, and a player can't be traded while he is on waivers. 

I doubt that the Cubs would place Ramirez on Outright Assignment Waivers and risk losing him for the $20,000 waiver price. He has more value than that. And I doubt that the Cubs would be able to get Ramirez through waivers without him being claimed, either, and they almost certainly know that. 

So if I had to guess, I would say Ramirez will probably get traded sometime in the next week (by a week from tomorrow) for either a player on the other club's 40-man roster who does have minor league options left, or for a minor league player with some upside who is not on an MLB 40-man roster, or for a PTBNL (or cash) with a substantially higher cash option than the $20,000 waiver price.

lester done after 2.2ip...yow. far from his A-game today. shortest start by a cub starter this season. last time a cubs starter went less than 5ip was last september (ham).

This "I refuse to take a walk" approach from Almora has got to be seriously pissing Theo off. Almora was Theo's first pick in Theo's Cubs job, Theo is Mr. OBP, and the kid simply refuses to take a BB. Really remarkable. Either that, or AAA pitchers have had remarkable command when facing him over the past month.

it was a draft where most cubs fans seemed more interested in the 3 pitchers the cubs picked behind him...not because they expected them to be future aces on the cheap, but because almora was a "boring" contact-speed-defense CF'r. no one was expecting him to turn into a power hitting machine, or an ob% machine, or steal 50 bases, etc...he didn't walk in highschool, either (but he did hit like .600). after correa/buxton/zunino (1,2,3) there wasn't much people were hyped about except appel (who was hyped beyond all 3 guys who went first)...and appel did an awesome job tanking his value with his demands. zimmer and gausman (both with good hype) went before the cubs picked. there were some guys with good hype expected to go later than the cubs slot that are better than where their hype landed them...like giolito, stroman, and mccullers. giolito was getting really strong low-pick hype for a while, but his $$ demands and health (elbow) scared teams off. WAS gambled on him with their #16 pick and signed him for $3m just before the deadline to sign him. theo was spotted in town personally scouting stroman near draft time...so he was in consideration even if they passed on him. that said, if almora can come up and manage a .330-ish ob% with 30-ish doubles and 10-15 homers while playing his already very polished D in CF...that's a nice talent to have on the cheap for 4+ years. it's not what you're looking for out of a low draft slot 1st round pick, but the talent hype going into the 2012 draft wasn't very heavy after the assumed "no-brainer" picks of correa/buxton/zunino and m.appel (which turned out to be a years-long weird ass drama).

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

    It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

    The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

    cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

    oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

    i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

    he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

    CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately. 

    You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.  

    Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
