Cubs @ Cardinals: Hammel vs Wacha (Game 44)

I’ve been through St. Louis on a horse with no name…
CHC (29-14): RHP Jason Hammel (5-1, 2.13)
STL (24-21): RHP Michael Wacha (2-4, 4.03)
First pitch: 6:10pmCST

Hammel lost to the Brewers on Thursday (6 IP, 4 ER, 7 K, 2 BB). After starting strong, he’s now 2-1 with a 3.97 in four May starts. He gave up 1 ER in 6 innings to win at Busch last month. The Cardinals are 40-133 (.301) against him. Last night’s hero/pain in the ass, Grichuk, is 3-8 with a HR.

Wacha had his worst outing of the season his last time out, getting knocked around by the Rockies (4 IP, 6 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) but getting a no-decision in a game the Cards went on to win 13-7. He was 1-2 with a 6.86 in four starts against the Cubs last year. The Cubs are 22-71 (.310) against him. Rizzo is 10-22 with 2 HRs.

Arrieta (8-0, 1.29) versus Martinez (4-4, 3.56) tomorrow at 12:45pmCST to close out the road trip.

Go, Cubs!

Well I guess if pitchers can keep working the edges of the plate to perfection it will be a long season. But that doesn't seem likely. Rizzo finally, fully, snapping out of it would help.

Remember just two weeks ago, when "all" they had to do was play .500 ball the rest of the season and coast into the playoffs?

Can we please stop pointing out how ridiculous it is to panic and start panicking in earnest?

I think they'll be ok too. But having watched this team since the mid-60s, I never think it's time to conclude, well, thank god the drought is over. I've seen/heard way too many people who follow the Cubs say glad we're finally going to win the Series this year. Please. Weren't the National considered a near lock last year? I'm actually kind of glad to see them hit a mini skid (And sure they still have the best record in baseball, but their last 12 games (which is over 7% of the season) they've played .333) early on, maybe they stay a little hungrier/more cautious instead of bragging about how great they are at celebrating their greatness.

vegas isn't a fan of the game because of how erratic and unpredictable it is. SF has recently won 3 world series many thought they weren't supposed to win...BOS won a world series recently that they weren't even supposed to be in the playoffs for...favored teams with huge wins have seen 1st round exists...fun times. for the most part there's decent enough odds for picking who's getting to the playoffs, but once teams are there it becomes quite erratic. even the best of the best can lose 3-4 games over a 5-7 game series, especially vs another team good enough to make the playoffs.

Grichuk won the game last night but a decent CF would have caught that drive by Ross. Good Cubbery!

3rd inning...soler walked twice in the game...first time since aug 4th last year in the regular season (2 times in the playoffs, amazingly).

Pirates jumping all over Shelby Miller tonight - so glad the Cubs didn't flip a Dansby Swanson type prospect to the Braves for him. Two years of Lackey looking like a good alternative.

It is remarkable how my mood has become uplifted with one game against the Cards. That is sick. But, I have been an addict for a long time. A W tomorrow and it will be a .500 road trip. Also, to keep the losses in perspective, if the Cubs were to lose 10 games a month - a lot at this current pace - they still end up 102-60. Six months of the ride!

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).

Kris Bryant to IL with low back strain. He’s keeping the Rockies docs busy.
