Cubs @ Cardinals: Arrieta vs Martinez (Game 45)

What a difference a game makes. The starting pitching returned to form, Soler is showing patience and power, and Rizzo seems to be ending his slump. And Heyward is back and hitting in the #2 spot--to annoy crunch. All is right in Cubbie world, especially with Arrieta on the mound.

CHC (30-14): RHP Jake Arrieta (8-0, 1.29)
STL (24-22): RHP Carlos Martinez (4-4, 3.56)
First pitch: 12:45pmCST

Arrieta beat the Giants (7 IP, 1 ER, 8 K, 2 BB) on Friday. He was 0-1 with a 3.65 in his two starts at Busch last year. The Cards are 24-135 (.178) against him. Adams is 5-15.

Martinez is suffering through an awful May, having lost all four of his starts and running a 5.85 ERA. He gave up 4 ER in 5 innings against the Diamondbacks his last time out. He went 4-0 with a 1.93 in April, including his win against the Cubs. For their careers, the Cubs are 23-92 (.250) against him. Fowler is 5-14, and Rizzo is 4-15 with 2 HR.

It’s an off day tomorrow, then Morgan (1-2, 5.61) and the surprisingly competitive Phillies are in town to face Lester (4-3, 2.60) at 1:20pmCST.

Go, Cubs!

Martinez is one of my least favorite pitchers in baseball. I'd love to see a game like yesterday's against him. Send Soler down!

Eloy Jimenez atop the leader board for minor-league home runs in the Cub system, with seven. Tied with Balaguert and Vogelbach, two 24-year-olds. Jimenez won't be 20 until late November. Leads the Midwest League in SLG and OPS. Maybe he'll get promoted to the Myrtle Beach squad that visits Woodbridge, VA, in June or Frederick, MD, in August. Watched two Pelican games at Frederick the other week. Was most impressed by Stinnett and Happ. Happ may swing harder than Javier Baez, though more compactly. (Also got to see Brockmeyer hit a bomb.)

CB Bucknor not having a good day....

also this...

Jesse Rogers ‏@ESPNChiCubs  Yeah, there was plenty of chatter before the game about home plate ump today. Knew he would be a factor.

~shrug~ he's CB Bucknor, he's usually awful.

But today he called 2 pitches balls that really looked like strikes, one looked particularly obvious. Even Arrieta jawed at him and that's rare for Arrieta. He also didn't bother to ask anyone or notice Molina clearly reaching his arm out to get hit intentionally.

Bucknor tried to turn a 4-pitch walk to LaStella into an interesting AB, but LaStella prevailed.

Looks like the Cubs got short end of the Castro Warren deal so far. He is atrocious. Even in games with huge leads he sucks ass. Wonder what they saw in him? Maybe he is a better starter? Ugh!

not that I'm agreeing with E-Man in anyway here, but Warren's FIP and peripherals are not really good (5.20 FIP/5.19 BB/9/.128 BABIP), although his actual results are a lot better. Well until today...

Trade was also to make room for Zobrist and it'll be a few years before we can really judge it.

phew

Arrieta starting. Leads of 6-1 and 9-4. You don't expect to have such a sense of relief when they win.

Very satisfying, gut-check win today. The beers on the trip back to Chicago are going to taste fantastic.

Strangest win of the year, and one of the sweetest. Twice I thought it was easily in the bag, then after the first 2 hitters in the 9th I thought all was lost. Big game for Grimm, Strop & Rondon. But, man, those Cards can hit for power.

I don't think the error call was completely out of the blue but the ball took a very bad hop and would have taken a very good play to get it. Same with one of the Stella throws where I think it could have easily been ruled a hit. Neither were cut and dry calls though imo.

Don't mess with the SI jinx. Since the Javy/Cubs cover came out, he is 2-for-20 with no walks.

The hot start was nice, but it won't always come easy. It's nice to see them have to work for it every once in a while.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

    booooooooooo

also, wisdom and taillon are both in chicago.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
