Dodgers @ Cubs: Kazmir vs Arrieta (Game 50)

Arrieta follows the bullpen in the rotation.LAD (27-25): LHP Scott Kazmir (4-3, 4.84)
CHC (35-14): RHP Jake Arrieta (9-0, 1.72)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Arrieta had his worst outing of the year on Wednesday in St. Louis (5 IP, 4 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) but came away with a win anyway, after the Cubs scored 9 runs. The last time he saw the Dodgers, he was wearing a mustache onesie and celebrating his first no-hitter. The Dodgers are 14-72 (.194) against him. Crawford is 5-14 with a HR, and Gonzalez is 5-18 with a HR. Utley is 0-10; if he's lucky, he'll get the day off.

Kazmir beat the Reds (6 IP, 1 ER, 12 K, 2 BB) his last time out. He’s 2-0 with a 6.26 so far on the road this year. The Cubs are 2-21 (.095) against him. Zobrist is 1-8, and Fowler is 1-9.

Bolsinger (1-1, 4.50) versus Lester (5-3, 2.48) tomorrow at 7:05pmCST.

Go, Cubs!

Comments

Before Wood,Strop, Rondon yesterday Elias: 99 yrs. since a bullpen threw at least 7 perfect innings. last time 6/23/17 by Boston. Ernie Shore retired last 26 after Babe Ruth ejected for arguing balls and strikes after walking lead off hitter. Runner was caught stealing.

watching a game on ESPN is one of the worst things a fan of whatever team is on the field can do...this is, once again, turrible.

Is Jessica Mendoza still announcing for ESPN? She is excellent from what I remember and actually talks knowledgeably about baseball.

yeah, she's not on this game, though. they keep talking about things that aren't this game...a lot...rather than calling this game, doing split screen coverage of other games, doing split screen studio banter, and they just finished cutting away from the game totally (no split screen) to cover another game while missing rizzo's K and the first 2 pitches of zobrist's AB. ESPN...because screw you, you weren't really tuning in to watch this.

I'm thinking Kazmir did not get the memo he was supposed to pitch like a tomato can tonight. Jeesh

Vin Scully sang the seventh-inning stretch. Along with all the great things he is known for, he can sing! He sounded like Willie Nelson out there. And he gave a nice shout-out to Harry. What a class guy.

Thru seven innings the Cubs have more errors than hits and Zobrist has struck out 3 times. And now Richard is pitching. These things do not add up to victory

I'll give this to Richard: he looks the part of a good pitcher, straight out of central casting. It's a shame he struggles with the getting guys out part of the game.

Ahhh Richard with your 6.00+ ERA as a short reliever... You ain't gonna be on no Playoff roster.

g.soto is doing horrible in AAA...unfortunately. unless they decide to bring up g.concepcion or make a trade we might have richard around a little longer. ...that said, it wouldn't surprise me to see him DFA'd after the game...the "lefty specialist" just let 3 lefties in a row get on base. ugg.

Oof -- ugly game at the plate and from the pen, which was the hero yesterday. Sorry Jake -- you deserved better.

    bellinger "right rib contusion"

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.

myself, i make a good amount of outrageously unrealistic comments that are sometimes "violent"...like my recent suggestion of "pulling the bandaid off" by having hendricks throw every inning of every game until he's on the IL.

i would hope any athlete that cares about what is written on the internet realizes how casual fans can be about treating their lives like scripted TV characters that don't have real lives.  it's not an excuse to do it, but there's a lot of it out there.

but yeah, in real life i'm rooting for guys to have long and healthy careers even if i'm not happy with current performances...except for some guys...and i'm pretty sure i don't leave grey area for those comments...and almost all of them are not good humans whether they're playing baseball or not...

hendricks was getting a good amount of boos in his last game.  i would bet a million that he will get a standing O every time he visits wrigley in his post-playing days, or a return with a new team should his career continue...or if he comes back and puts in an oldschool good performance.
