Cubs @ Mets: Hammel vs deGrom (Game 79)

OK, now it’s revenge.CHC (51-27): RHP Jason Hammel (7-4, 2.58)
NYM (41-37): RHP Jacob deGrom (3-4, 2.67)
First pitch: 6:10pmCST

Hammel lost in Miami on Sunday (6 IP, 2 ER, 3 K, 2 BB). He went 1-3 with a 3.45 in June. The Mets are 39-144 (.271) against him. Loney is 13-41 with 3 HR.

deGrom had a tough luck no-decision in Atlanta his last time out (8 IP, 0 ER, 6 K, 1 BB). He has not won since April 30 against the Giants. He went 0-3 with a 2.45 (!?) in June. The Cubs are 11-39 (.282) against him. Rizzo is 3-9 with a HR.

Arrieta (12-2, 2.10) versus Colon (6-4, 2.86) tomorrow at 6:15pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Comments

OK -- my 4th of July resolution is to try to stay more positive. So -- 10 games to the AS break, meaning the Cubs will be in first place at the break! First time since...2008? Also, hopefully, Willson, KB and Javy learned something about Familia yesterday that they can use in the future.

delayed until 7:20 -EST- (tarp off the field)... CLE/TOR in the top 18th in case you're bored. 2nd baseman r.goins pitching for TOR...hit 90mph so far. 1ip 2h 1bb 0k, 0 r/er (bb was ibb). he threw a fastball/change mix. crowd loved it. d.ross is not impressed. d.barney strands j.lake at 2nd in the bottom 18 for the cubs bluejays...to the 19th! -cubs game has begun- d.barney pitching the 19th!!! ...and he gives up a HR to c.santana facing his 1st batter. he's exclusively throwing 83-86mph fastballs. 1ip 1h 0bb 1k, 1 r/er (struck out m.napoli) CLE wins...longest MLB game of the season.

Nimmo certainly does not want to see the Cubs leave town. His first MLB rbi last night and now his first HR. At least Hammel is eating some innings ... this is the kind of game Peralta should be used if at all.

RIP jason hammel's awesome ERA. 10 ER in 4ip...almost a full point tacked on tonight, alone. 5HR given up tonight. oogly.

If baseball does not work out for Patton, I think he's got a future in Civil War re-enactments. He's got a solid Johnny-Reb look to him.

Hammel has had a rather challenging last month. I am hoping post-break that Hendrix gets pushed ahead of him. They'll be lucky to win a game in NY

Thank you, Jason, for allowing me to get to bed at a decent hour. Very thoughtful. It will be very interesting to see what Theo does at the deadline. Of course, if Jake doesn't get straightened out, it really doesn't matter. A lot of Jake's comments this year, and his posing for nudie pics in the ESPN magazine, rang some alarm bells -- after one great year (and it was amazingly great), his head has swelled tremendously. Jake, look up the word "hubris", then look in the mirror.

To take my mind of this latest disaster...wow, I thought baseball money was crazy, but NBA money is now super-wacko crazy. Joakim Noah is 31 with bad knees and absolutely no offensive game. He can't make a layup. The Knicks just agreed to pay him $72M over 4 years. Holy crap.

I don't see how sports economics is sustainable. The Mets are still paying Bobby Bonilla, for God's sake. Contracts like Heyward's are lots of fun for the players, but from an economic standpoint, make no sense. Hell, they don't even make sense to Heyward. Why does he need $150 million? $30 million won't do the trick?

TV money for sports will continue to go up. With all the viewing dispersion with cable/Netflix/binging/etc., the only place advertisers can reliably get a large audience is sports TV, namely NFL and NBA games. Mike Conley just got 5 years/$150 million. Crazy, man.

so... anyone else ready for the all-star break? =p it's been a tough past couple weeks...except that reds series. i miss playing the reds. that was cool.

Normally, with a lead like the Cubs have, I wouldn't say tonight's game is big, but tonight's game is big. Arrietta needs to step up tonight.

The Mets were 0-7 last regular season vs Cubs. So October is a whole different thang. I'm focused on getting the DL players back especially Fowler, Soler, TLS, Warren. The playing time this affords to Contreras and CJ is pure bonus in 2016. Plus they are throwing the usual spaghetti at the bullpen wall to see what sticks (Nathan, Crow, Patton, Richard and Peralta (please don't stick)). Last year it was Richard, Soriano and Rodney, but it also had additional limp spaghetti including the likes of Schlitter, Wada, Hunter, Roach, Coke, Medina and Beeler.

yeah, for me this isn't about who's better at 3rd.  it's madrigal, period.  for me it's about who's not hitting in the lineup because madrigal is in the lineup.

occasional play at 3rd for madrigal, okay.  going with the steele/ground-ball matchup...meh, but okay, whatever.

seeing madrigal get significant starting time...no thanks.

Yeah I am very disappointed Madrigal is starting. He has no business as a starter. He is AAA insurance, a back up at best. Sure his defense looks fine because he plays far enough in that his noodle arm isn’t totally exposed. It comes at the cost of 3B range.

He’s garbage, and a team serious about winning would NOT have him starting opening day.

in other news, it took 3 PA before a.rizzo got his 1st HBP of the season.

With two home runs (so far) and 5 rbi today … clearly Nick Martini is the straw that stirs the Reds drink 😳

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.
