TCR Goes National

Well it was nice knowing you all, can't say enough about each and every reader...you guys are the best, really. But now that The Cub Reporter has gone national, well, see you losers. Please send media requests to Rob G., I hear Arizona Phil and Transmission are particulary photogenic.

All kidding aside, we did get a mention in USA Today yesterday, well actually reader "DC Tom" did for one of his comments on Ron Santo missing the Hall of Fame. Who and how they unearthed that comment I'm unsure of, but we'll take it.

I'm 98% sure that I won't be able to keep up with the rumors today as I'm fighting a nasty cold and honestly, if I read one more headline saying the deal is "close" or "closer", I'll  beat the offending reporter with their own keyboard.

Hopefully Arizona Phil or someone else will cover the Rule 5 draft today.

Is this a joke? You didn't know that THE COMMENTS SECTION of TCR is read and regularly gets picked up by the media?

Oh, so THAT'S why there is paparazzi stationed outside my apartment bedroom window this morning... It's the USA Today publicity... So much for my quite life of solitude. That is pretty sweet though. Unsolicited, there's a national reporter who thinks it's relevant and useful to slog through our message board comments. Kudos to everyone for giving our conversations such a good reputation. I think I can kill off my next round of grading by mid-afternoon. If I survive the departmental holiday pot-luck mid-day without punching anyone, I can help with winter meeting updates.

Interesting quote from Towers regarding the Rule 5 draft: "There are some guys we're interested in taking, but a lot depends on our roster situation ... everything is tied to this [Peavy deal]," Towers said. I always thought he was kind of bluffing when he said he'd pull Peavy off the block if he didn't get a feel a trade would happen as of Thursday morning. However, he's right -- he needs to know if he's going to be getting a bunch of players before he takes one or two in the Rule 5 draft. Maybe this thing really will be make-or-break today. Go get 'em, Jim.

Given that the Padres would be netting four or five players from any Peavy deal, 40-man roster considerations are significant. According to their web site, they have 37 players on the 40-man roster today, so they could pick up some guys today but might have to return them (or cut others) if they make the trade later this weekend. But if Towers pulls Peavy off the table simply so he can participate in the Rule 5 draft, that's a bit like the tail wagging the dog. Especially a talent-free-zone like this Rule 5 draft.

A speaker is only as good as his platform and his microphone. No paparazzi outside my home today, folks. I'm very glad TCR got the publicity. Though not sure why they picked that quote, there was far better coverage of the Santo debacle elsewhere on TCR. But that's the USA Today for you, sound bites over substance. (and yes, I threw that in to see if a Murdoch paper picks it up.)

have "inside track" on Abreu...via rotoworld.

Bruce Levine just on Espn 1000 Nothing new, Cubs looking hard at Bradley they did physical on him which I believe has already been reported on TCR. Abreu not a good fit for Cubs due to age and price. Levine said nothing about Abreau for Sux.

its being noted that the Sox would have to move Dye and his contract first before they can make a run at Abreu.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
