Cubs @ Dodgers: Montgomery vs Norris (Game 127)

The Cubs only need to win one from the Dodgers to have a winning road trip, but we'll settle for all three.CHC (81-45): LHP Mike Montgomery (4-5, 2.41)
LAD (72-56): RHP Bud Norris (6-10, 4.69)
First pitch: 9:10pmCST

Montgomery, an area native, hit his pitch count after 4.1 innings and had to take a no-decision in Colorado in his first start with the Cubs. He gave up 1 ER (a solo HR to Hundley in the 5th), struck out 5, and walked 2. Reddick, the only Dodger to have faced him, is 1-2.

Norris has had a rough start as a Dodger. He went 3-2 with a 4.34, in July after being acquired from the Braves but got shelled in his last start, giving up 6 ER in 3.2 in Cincinnati. He’s appeared out of the bullpen since then and gave up an ER in less than an inning. The Cubs are 25-104 (.240) against him. Heyward is 3-10 with a HR.

Other notes: Lackey and Rondon are slated to throw bullpen sessions this weekend. And Carlos Ruiz, acquired from the Phillies for clubhouse favorite AJ Ellis, will make his Dodger debut.

The Cubs won 3 of the 4 games against the Dodgers at Wrigley in May-June.

Hammel looks to bounce back from his rocky start against the Rockies tomorrow at 3:05pmCST.

Go Cubs!

If I were a betting man Give me the Dodgers tonite, not just because of Monty on mound. Two nights in LA for the kids? Woooo /Prove me wrong

It's August 26. Cubs with 14 game lead. And not for #1 draft pick. Words I never thought I would type together.

last year they won 97...and came in 3rd in the division. crazy game on a year-to-year basis. this year it's likely no one else in the division will win 90, though it's technically possible at this point. no matter what, this is a special team, though...very well rounded...and should be mostly intact next year with a bonus schwarber. chapman may not be around, but whatever...rondon and crew are capable even if not on chapman's level.

I figured this was going to be the most meaningless regular season in Cubs history...and it is pretty much on point, although I certainly didn't think we'd have close to a 14 game lead. But, one bad hop in game 1 in October could change absolutely everything we will remember about this year.

If my math is correct, if the Cubs play .500 baseball for the rest of the season, they will finish with 99 wins. I only just confirmed through Baseball Reference that 97 wins last year (and 2008) were the most Cubs wins in my lifetime. I think that last year while Arrieta was pitching better than Cy F. Young I didn't really get or appreciate what he was doing. I'm trying to try to grasp in the moment just how fucking remarkable this season is.

First year I'm not going to a Cubs/Dodgers game in a long time. 4 month old baby kinda changes plans around. But the no-hitter I was at last year can last in the memory banks for awhile. I think Dodger Dogs are awful. I love hot dogs, but those are crap.

think I have to miss this series too (also was at the Arrieta game last year). But in my case, just had a busy weekend with work and kids have a bunch of activities and we made it to Opening Day in Anaheim and a couple of games in Wrigley this year which we normally don't get too...so not feeling like I'm missing out this year.

We may have a chance to catch one in October. Although hell, I couldn't deal with my co-workers if we lose to them.

Seager with the two out double *cough* to left field in the bottom of the fourth. If Soler just plays that bunny hop off his nuts, it's a single - certainly no double.

carlos ruiz is still coming up to "in the air tonight" by phil 'are you kidding me' collins in LA. many years ago before phil collins it was a soulja boy song. dude has odd taste in music. at least it's not yanni...i guess.

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

  • Eric S (view)

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).

Kris Bryant to IL with low back strain. He’s keeping the Rockies docs busy.
