Pirates @ Cubs: Vogelsong vs Hammel (Game 132)

Cubs 6, Pirates 5
W: Hammel (14-7); L: Vogelsong (3-4); S: Chapman (12)

PIT (67-63): RHP Ryan Vogelsong (3-3, 3.02)
CHC (84-47): RHP Jason Hammel (3.21, 13-7)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Hammel gets bumped ahead of Montgomery, who was supposed to start today, because of his short outing on Saturday in LA (2.1 IP, 3 ER, 1 K, 0 BB). He’s 2-0 with a 2.31 in his two starts against the Pirates this season. Overall, they are 46-173 (.266) against him. McCutchen is 12-36 with 3 HR.

Vogelsong won in Milwaukee his last time out (5.1 IP, 2 ER, 6 K, 4 BB). He’s 0-0 with a 2.70 in his two starts against the Cubs this season. Overall, the Cubs are 29-101 (.287) against him. Rizzo is 4-8 with 3 HRs.

The Shark (!) returns with the Giants to start a four-game set tomorrow at 7:05pmCST. Montgomery (4-5, 3.02) gets the start.

Go Cubs!

Comments

Down on the farm: "Dealin'" Cease with another good outing for Eugene. Last 4 outings: 16IP, 1ER 29K. But, 10BB. Throw strikes, kid. Candelario is killing it at Iowa after struggling at AA: .320/.406/.941 in 241AB. At age 22. Where the heck to put him next year? UPDATE: Candy goes 3-5 tonight. Now hitting .325. Also, Almora 4-5, which is nice to see.

this makes the most sense. the team could use a replacement in the pen when chapman leaves and bryant could fetch a nice pen arm...maybe...there's a bit of concern about bryant's poor hitting in clutch situations. bryant has served his purpose...time to move on and let the kids play. you're next russell.

So presuming he remains on the MLB Active List for the balance of the MLB regular season, Tommy LaStella will be at 2+102 MLB Service Time at the end of the season, far short of what he would have needed to accrue to have a chance at "Super Two" status post-2016. (Even if he had remained on the MLB Active List for the entire season and finished at 2+124 MLB Service Time, he still would have only been "on the bubble" for possible "Super Two" status post-2016).

The Twins lost their 47th game on June 17. That's all I got tonight. Go Cubs.

Twitter tells me more boo's than cheers for LaStella.

Sigh.

What was the reaction in Chapman's first game? I was there about a week later and it was all cheers.

Not that the situations are a one-to-one, but...damn, priorities 'Murica.

@CarrieMuskat 41s41 seconds ago Bryant is 1st #Cubs player to top 35 HRs since Aramis Ramirez hit 38 in 2006

surprised me, thought Soriano may have or Rizzo...maybe LaHair or Schierholtz too :)

he's attempting a comeback (or he's just very bored) and playing indie ball in the atlantic league...short-lived-cub brad snyder is also on his team. very boring numbers for a guy with his experience in indie ball, though not bad numbers...probably not enough to get him a minor league deal at his age (33)

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
