nats sign yadiel hernandez. damn. didn't expect the cubs to snag him, but it would have been nice to see him end up on a less powerful team...and not in the NL. fwiw, great eye at the plate...not all that powerful or fast, but not just a singles/BB hitter...corner OF guy (best in LF)... whether he's brought in for bench or fighting for a LF job vs werth (doubtful, but a hell of an insurance policy), he's got his pros/cons either way.

aside from not playing for a year+ vs good competition, he bulked up a bit (muscle, in good shape) and i wonder if that effected his play and what people saw during his workouts for teams. he was pretty much taken for next to nothing...leads me to believe his workouts may not have been so great. FLA was heavily linked to him and though their corner OF is locked in, i find it hard to believe they couldn't do better than WAS's deal unless they decided to not get involved.

Wow. GJ Inciarte! Also, is Rob Z hurt? He hasn't pitched since 9/4 (17 days ago). I thought he had a legit chance of pitching his way into playoff roster consideration since he is a LHRP. So is he injured or reached an innings limit or something?

So Jim DeShaies gets the title of Most Literate Cubs Color Man. With Robert Stevenson on the mound, he made a reference to Cubs coach Brandon Hyde. Len didn't get the reference, which was for Robert Louis Stevenson writing The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde. I have been watching Cubs baseball for fifty years, and this is the hippest literary reference yet. I like JD more than any Cub color man, but this takes the cake.

4 innings in and every position player has a hit except that bum k.bryant.

Braves rally from down 3-0 after 6 to beat Familia and the Mets in NY -- Braves sweep the series. Baseball! Just saw the highlight -- two out in the 9th, Braves CF robs Cespedes of a GW HR. Amazin'!

@GDubCub Cubs rearrange rotation, line up Cy Young favorites Lester and Hendricks for first two games of playoffs

Arrieta--starts (only) game three, something that would have been unimaginable at the start of the season.

no dice. apology rejected. suspended without pay. “As soon as we became aware of the tweets posted by Steve yesterday we began to examine all of our options in regard to his standing on the team,” Dipoto said. “Today we have informed him that he is suspended for the remainder of the season without pay.” bonus: my favorite comment about the suspension so far...from el los deadspino "The Venn diagram of people who will bring up the first amendment and censorship at this and people who think Kaepernick should be forced to leave the country is single circle."

following an off-day with a day game during the work week should be banned. it's pretty much commie nazi type activity and totally unamerican.

The Red Sox are absolutely kicking ass -- 4 game sweep of BAL follows 4 game sweep of NYY. Very impressive, and a bit scary.

With the recent decimation of Cleveland's rotation, Red Sox now are basically equal odds with Cubs to win their respective pennants.

excited to see more power in the lineup.

HOU going with 3 righty starters vs the cubs and their only lefty pen arm is hader.

unless busch has a mystery injury, we should see busch+mervis working all 3 games.

More than 50 years ago (I'm old), I was in the audience when my HS choir performed the whole thing. (It was a really elite choir and director.) That was my first exposure to the piece. You're right, Sonicwind75, there is a lot more to it than "O Fortuna," just like there's a lot more to Beethoven's Ninth than the Ode to Joy, etc. Much if it, as you say, is bawdy: "O! O! Totus florio! Iam amori virginali, totus ardeo!" Basically, "I'm really horny for these virgins!" And the guys in the choir adopted the "Skoal"- type greeting from the tavern scene: "Wafna!"

i would have pause if the cubs had a pitching squeeze.   as it is, they have more guys than they have roster.

    Maybe Brewer

He'd be able to leave the Cubs. He's out of options. That would open up a 40man spot.

I don't think Jed would do that.

  • crunch (view)

brewer has done nothing to keep him on the big league roster...imagine that's 1 guy gone.

yeah, it's only 2 appearances, but they were both unimpressive.

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Yeah it is.....sorry......closers don't throw 89mph

It would be unique for sure.

But CP can't be HR susceptible

That's what Alzolay has right now and that's what Kyle has no matter the situation.

Supposedly Happ said on a radio show he's good to go

I hadn't read that anywhere from the usual accounts, so this could be off.

    If true, Canario goes down.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Hmmm. Maybe my idea of transitioning Hendricks into a closer role isn’t so crazy.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Mervis and Wesneski getting promoted aaccording to Tommy Birch from Des Moines Register.

    So Happ to the IL

    Maybe Hendricks to IL ????

    Mervis/Cooper are DH platoon

    Wisdom, Canario, Tauchman share LF/RF

I wonder if Busch has ever played LF?

    I don't believe he has

“I respect his track record of what he’s accomplished,” Counsell said on Sunday morning. “And you go through these. He’s gone through -- maybe not this particular stretch -- but stretches where you’re not pitching the way you want to and struggling. And you figure it out.” -- Counsell on Hendricks

    fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...

i respect his track record of no longer being in the rotation.  in 2016 he threw 2 innings out of the pen, his only work out of the pen.  the cubs won the world series that year.  let's repeat that magic.  the formula is obvious.  stats don't lie.  etc etc whatever...

small sample size and all, but how about this craziness...

"Entering Sunday, Hendricks had allowed an .843 OPS against hitters in their initial plate appearance, followed by a 1.056 OPS in a second meeting and a 2.449 OPS when seeing batters for a third time."
