Cardinals @ Cubs: Martinez vs Lester (Game 155)

Cubs 3, Cardinals 1
W: Lester (19-4); L: Martinez (15-9); S: Chapman (36)PREVIEW
STL (81-73): RHP Carlos Martinez (15-8, 3.16)
CHC (98-56): LHP Jon Lester (18-4, 2.36)
First pitch: 7:08pmCST

Lester went 7 strong innings of one-run ball to beat the Reds on Tuesday. He’s 4-0 with an 0.58 in September, so I think he’s ready for the playoffs. He’s 1-0 with a 1.29 in two games against the Cardinals this season. Overall, they are 46-186 (.247) against him. Molina is 6-19.

Martinez escaped from Colorado by giving up 2 ER in 5 innings for the win his last time out. He’s 1-2 with a 5.25 in four games against the Cubs this year. For their careers, they are 45-167 (.269) against him. Rizzo is 7-23 with 3 HRs.

The teams have split the season series so far with 9 games apiece, so maybe a win will make the Cardinals feel better about losing the division by so many games. Heh.

Hendricks (15-8, 2.06) versus Kuhl (5-3, 3.73) in Pittsburgh tomorrow at 6:05pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Reports this morning that Marlins' pitching ace Jose Fernandez died in a boating accident - just horrible news.

I know what you're trying to say, Charlie, that none of us feels what his loved ones must be feeling. On the other hand, what makes a death like this tragic is precisely the loss, based on Fernandez's youth and brilliance, to the baseball world. So, for example, we can say that Princess Diana's death meant more, in aggregate, to millions of admirers who didn't know her personally than to her loved ones.

as a fan, he only "owes" us the game on the field and not getting in the way of others on his team being ready to play (imo). it's exponentially worse to his family and friends, but this dude most likely had 15+ years of play left and even though he just turned 24 a couple months ago he had already established himself as a top guy in the game. if you tossed out every team's roster and started over with a fresh draft i can't imagine he wouldn't be a top-20 overall 1st round pick out of the 750-1200 guys playing on a roster (most likely a top-10 pick for many teams). sure, he may have destroyed his shoulder next year and we'd lose him to obscurity like mark prior, but he never got a chance to blaze much of a professional path. how much better was he destined to be at the game? his upside could have been something they talk about 100+ years from now given what he had already shown. it sucks to lose that from the talent pool. it sucks that we've seen all the jose fernandez there is to see.

Somehow I am sensing alcohol was involved. The highest number of boating accidents by a wide margin...

boston pitching snags a couple of mlb team records... "Over nine innings of play, Boston's staff struck out 11 straight Tampa Bay Rays hitters Sunday, breaking the major-league record for most consecutive strikeouts in a game. The previous record was held by former New York Mets right-hander Tom Seaver, who struck out 10 straight hitters in 1970. Not only that, but with a strikeout to end the ninth, sending the game into extras, Boston's staff also struck out an MLB-record 21 batters over nine innings."

d.ross gets his 2nd standing O on the night (last home game of the season)...hits HR #10...curtain call. baseball.

What a weird day.  Jose Fernandez and Arnold Palmer, but then Scully and, on a much more modest level, Ross....

2 out in the 7th, lester at 84 pitches, ross taken out for the standing O. it's possible contreras will catch lester for another inning+.

Cubs finish 33 over at home. I was, personally, one game over at 3-2, which was one of my better years in a while. I do hope that's the last time we see the Cardinals this year. A lot of power, which is dangerous, particularly in a short series, and they have really shut down KB all year. Oh, and Jon Lester? Damn!

Nicely done! I think in my 10-14 games I went .500 or a little over. Strangely, I went to the Cards games they mostly lost (incl Saturday) and the one SF game they lost, plus a couple Brewers games they lost, too. I should have gone to just Reds games. But still - saw mostly very good baseball on the North Side this year. Regardless of what happens come October - the Cubs are positioned for some good times in the next 3-5 years.

RIP Arnie. We could use a lot more like you -- a man who succeeded and failed on his own terms, a true original, and, finally, a remarkable example of graciousness towards others.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

  • Charlie (view)

Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.
