Hendricks gave up 2 ER in 6 innings and took the loss against the lowly Brewers on Sunday, which probably ended his outside shot at the Cy Young. He’s 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA against the Pirates this year. Overall, they are 24-98 (.245) against him. Polanco is 7-17 with a HR.

The rookie Kuhl (if that is his real name) has been consistently mid-rotation all season. He went 6 innings and gave up 1 ER to win in Milwaukee his last time out. He’s 0-1 with an 8.59 in his two starts against the Cubs this season. They are 11-29 (.379) against him. Rizzo is 2-5 with a HR.

The Cubs are 12-3 against the Pirates so far this season. That’ll do.

Lackey (10-8, 3.39) versus Vogelsong (3-6, 4.85) tomorrow at 6:05pmCST.

jose fernandez's number is going to be retired by FLA. there's custom jerseys on their way to tonight's game (and hopefully will make it on time). all the marlins are going to wear #16 tonight. this still sucks.

The Marlins organization is obviously affected deeply by this. I feel for the people there. And I understand circumstances have changed. But retiring his number. Wow. Literally a week ago the rumor mill was fast and furious about how Fernandez was going to be traded this winter, with the front office in response doing almost nothing to deny it. And to turn around and retire his number, just like that, when they obviously felt the organization would have been better long-term without him, just reeks of insincerity. And yeah, things have changed. A horrible accident happened, and I acknowledge the team is devastated by it even from a non-baseball perspective. But let's remember. This is still the Marlins. This is still Loria. Maybe in my eyes, he just can't do anything right and I'm being unfairly biased. But this retiring his number right away deal simply feels like one more bullshit P.R. stunt from baseball's long-time worst executive.

Maybe they have a bad owner, I don't know, but they still have players and fans and a franchise, all devastated by this loss of life. Plus, everybody who follows baseball is a fan of a guy like this. It's why I used the word tragedy, which other people throw around but I try to be careful with. I'm at an age where I remember old incidents better than recent ones, but I have to go back to Herb Score for something as disturbing.

Old Cub fans remember when Ken Hubbs died at 22 in the crash of a small plane he was piloting in a storm in Utah in 1964. But Hubbs was not an elite power pitcher like Score and Fernandez. Score lived a long time after the accident but it was (effectively) career-ending.

FLA really doesn't look like they're mentally/physically prepared for this game. never seen anything like this...it's not just a few people in the dugout still feeling it large, it's pretty much everyone. i doubt it will lead to some kinda error-filled little league quality game, but everyone looks drained and still draining. ...and onto the cubs game. go #100.

d.gordon leads off MIA inning with a HR...came up to bat wearing j.fernandez's helmet. he barely made it back into the dugout after crying his way around the bases. i can't watch this game anymore. it's too much...too real.

Suppose McLeod could still be asked by another organization but likely staying put.

rare air though if he can keep it under 2. Sounds like Maddon already made up his mind though and Hendricks seems like the sort that would want to earn it. Guessing he gets a quick hook if he's still under 2 after 5 innings.

Fwiw, he can give up 1 ER in 5 innings (or more) and still be under 2. If he gives up 2 ER, he would need throw 9 IP to keep it under 2. 1 ER in 4 IP would give him an ERA of exactly 2.

In terms of WAR, it's still Scherzer by a lot (6.4), then Cueto (5.6), Lester (5.5), Kershaw (5.5), Roark (5.4), and then Hendricks (5.1)

Cueto with the strained groin but might pitch Thursday.

My guess is Scherzer, Lester and Henricks ends up the top 3 vote.

"I like watching him pitch," Maddux said of Hendricks. "I like guys that rely on movement and location. I can relate to him. That's what I had to do. "I'd rather watch him pitch than some lefty throwing 95 mph." "I think it's great," Maddux said. "I look at the way he pitches off his fastball kind of like I did, and you look for guys who pitch the way you did." "For me, it was (Orel) Hershiser and even Mike Morgan. Our fastballs kind of do the same thing. Hendricks has a little movement and it sinks. It's not a four-seamer that's straight and it doesn't cut much."

Cubs get 100, KB gets 100, Hendricks gets below 2.00, Cards get absolutely destroyed by the Reds -- all good, other than some Rondon concern. Hopefully, he can get a few outings in this week and find his groove. Also, I guess Soler is still struggling with his right side. Hmmmm. Too bad Joe didn't let Addy bat with the bases loaded in the 7th -- great RBI opportunity. I assume all the relievers are on a set schedule this week, but it seems strange Chapman pitched back-to-back.

Hate to give the Mets credit, but they did everything right tonight in what had to be a very tough game for them to play. As Hollandsworth said on the Cubs post-game -- if you watched the game, you saw Mets players consoling Marlins players who were in tears during the game. Between that and the way Molina handled the Ross farewell -- maybe the Mets and Cardinal players aren't pure evil. Just the fans.

    masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

    I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

    That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

    Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

    I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
    I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
    I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
    That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
    I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
