Cubs @ Reds: Lester vs Adleman (Game 161)

Reds 7, Cubs 4
W: Adleman (4-4); L: Lester (19-5); S: Iglesias (6)PREVIEW
CHC (102-57): LHP Jon Lester (19-4, 2.28)
CIN (66-92): RHP Tim Adleman (3-4, 3.90)
First pitch: 3:10pmCST

Lester rolled off another win on Sunday against the Cardinals, keeping them scoreless through 6.2. He last lost on July 3, that nasty game in Flushing. He’s 5-0 with an 0.48 in September--aka, finishing strong. He’s 2-0 with a 1.95 in his 4 starts against the Reds this year. Overall, they are 32-138 (.232) against him. Phillips is 8-24.

Adleman won in St. Louis in his last outing (7 IP, 2 ER, 4 K, 0 BB). He had a no-decision against the Cubs before that, giving up 2 ER in 6.1 innings. The Cubs are 5-22 (.227) against the rookie. Rizzo is 2-3; Contreras and Russell have HRs.

Hendricks (16-8, 1.99) and his sub-2.00 ERA versus Stephenson (2-3, 6.27) to close out the regular season (!) tomorrow at 2:10pmCST.

Go Cubs!

lester going for #20...cubs haven't had a LH (thanks jpep for the correction) 20 game winner since d.ellsworth in 1963.

not that finishing 2nd place will matter much nor did this game, but have to think if Hendricks pitches well tomorrow, he could leapfrog Lester in Cy Young voting. Don't see anyway Scherzer doesn't win it regardless and it doesnt' look like Lester has any incentive clauses that matter. Also might give Cueto some votes.

Rather remarkable how many teams have really good 1-2 options this year.

Nats: Scherzer and Roark (and Strasburg was great before injuries)

Cubs: Lester and Hendricks (and Arrietta is still damn good just not as consistently lately)

Giants: Bumgarner and Cueto

Dodgers: Kershaw and Hill (and Maeda has been a helluva a good third)

something named Ty Blach has outpitched Clayton Kershaw through 6 innings (1-0 Giants).

cubs score 2 runs thanks to predictable reds pitching and horrible CIN defense...cubs only down by 1 now. heyward even got a gift 2rbi double out of an easy popout. neat.

be curious how long Maddon sticks with Lester to try and let offense get back into it and get him the win (4-2 as I type, was 4-0)

Fwiw, he needed 2.1 IP to cross 200 for season so he got that at least. He also needs 9 K's for 200K's on season and he has 4 through 3.

good news is now 5 K's for Lester through 4 (in a quest for 200 for season). Bad news is he's already at 86 pitches.

Friday's games will be in Washington, Chicago, Arlington, and Cleveland or Boston. Someone's game is starting laaaaaaaate - 50-50 chance it's the CDT Cubs.

Well, the AL Wild Card team will almost definitely be an east coast team unless the Mariners pull off a minor miracle. Meanwhile, the Cubs have a chance to be paired up against STL. I suspect one team or the other will have to start at 9 p.m. local time to accommodate the 4-game Friday TV schedule.

morel triple to start the season....yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah

LHP Blake Weiman appears to have been the last cut from the AAA Iowa roster. He is with the Tennessee group at Minor League Camp.

bruce bochy is hobbling rather badly for a guy who's had 2 hip replacements.  his gait is extremely wonky taking the lineup card to the ump.

yeah, for me this isn't about who's better at 3rd.  it's madrigal, period.  for me it's about who's not hitting in the lineup because madrigal is in the lineup.

occasional play at 3rd for madrigal, okay.  going with the steele/ground-ball matchup...meh, but okay, whatever.

seeing madrigal get significant starting time...no thanks.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Yeah I am very disappointed Madrigal is starting. He has no business as a starter. He is AAA insurance, a back up at best. Sure his defense looks fine because he plays far enough in that his noodle arm isn’t totally exposed. It comes at the cost of 3B range.

He’s garbage, and a team serious about winning would NOT have him starting opening day.

in other news, it took 3 PA before a.rizzo got his 1st HBP of the season.

With two home runs (so far) and 5 rbi today … clearly Nick Martini is the straw that stirs the Reds drink 😳

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.
