First pitch: 7:08pmCSTJake has pitched two games and 11 innings in the postseason and given up 6 ER. He’s struck out 10 and only walked 1, which is encouraging. During the regular season, he was 11-3 with a 3.59 on the road.

He pitched against the Indians at Wrigley in 2015, giving up 4 ER in 5 innings and taking the loss. Overall, these Indians are 18-66 (.273) against him. Davis is 3-10, Santana is 1-3 with a HR, and Napoli is 2-8 with a HR.

Bauer has had two starts this postseason: a 4.2 inning outing against Boston in the NLDS in which he gave up 3 ER and the “pinkie game” against Toronto, where he left in the first inning after getting blood all over the mound. "When I went to the mound and I saw blood on the rubber, that's not a real good sign that things are going real well," Francona would later say. You can’t argue with that.

At home this season, Bauer went 6-4 with a 4.73. He had a pretty good June, but the rest of the season he was mediocre or worse. For their careers, the Cubs are 5-29 (.172) against him. Russell is 2-3, Bryant is 1-3, and Fowler is 1-5.
 
Tomorrow is an off day, then on Friday we open the home part of the series with Tomlin versus Hendricks.

24 of the last 30 teams with Home Field advantage have won the world series. How in the hell is this still determined by the All Star game and why isn't there more outrage about it? Cubs got flat out beat last night, so not sure home field mattered...but still.

Cubs 4-3 on the road this postseason. Indians 4-2. Combined they're 8-5, which makes 9-1 slightly less glaring. [Whoops! Miscount: Indians 3-1 on the road, right? 1 win in Boston, 2 in Toronto; 1 loss in Toronto. So 7-4 combined, Cubs and Indians on the road. Pending further recounts.]

The Oakland A's have claimed LHRP Giovanni Soto off waivers from the Cubs. Soto was Designated for Assignment on Saturday to make room on the Cubs MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) for Kyle Schwarber, so that Schwarber could be assigned to the Arizona Fall League. (Schwarber had to be reactivated from the 60-day DL before he could play in the AFL). The Cubs acquired Soto from the Cleveland Indians for cash in April after he was Designated for Assignment by the Tribe (he was unlikely to fall all the way to the Cubs on waivers, so the Cubs offered the Indians more than the $20,000 waiver price to make sure that they would be able to get him).

ERIC S: I know AAA Iowa RHSP Ryan Williams (on I-Cubs DL since May) threw a bullpen session at Riverview the last day of Instructs (10/14) and it went well, and he was supposed to throw "live" BP the next week (which would have been last week) against the Cubs AFL guys (Happ, Jimenez, and Caratini). So I would think a Ryan Williams v. Kyle Schwarber "live" BP session was probably part of Schwarber's "rehab" process, but I did not see it. Also, Cubs AFL pitchers Ryan McNeil (Hi-A Myrtle Beach closer) and James Farris (who was the AA Tennessee closer by the end of the season) were scheduled to throw routine between-outings bullpen sessions last Friday, so Schwarber may have faced them, too, before the Cubs decided to activate him from the DL and assign him to the Mesa Solar Sox.

Maybe after he's done helping the Cubs win the World Series, Kyle Schwarber can return to the Mesa Solar Sox and help them win the AFL Championship, then maybe join a Latin American winter league team and help that club win the Caribbean Series in February, and then help Team USA win the World Baseball Classic in March, just in time to start the MLB regular season with the Cubs in April.

Looks like an absolutely miserable night in Cleveland -- cold and rainy. On the one hand, I'd rather have them play in good weather (Thursday forecast looks OK) -- hate to have a WS game decided on a slip or a wet ball. On the other hand, I don't want Miller to get a day of rest after throwing lots of pitches yesterday. Score early and often boys! FYI -- WS games cannot be shortened by rain. No matter what the score or inning, if the game is delayed/postponed by rain, it will be finished in its entirety. A good clarification by Bud, I think. I like most of what he did -- wild card, labor peace -- just not the stupid WS home field being decided by an exhibition game. They really need to change that, starting next year.

A rain-out tonight with Game 2 tomorrow is advantage Cubs, not Cleveland. We could bring back Hendricks a day early, which more than cancels out Miller. It also forces Cleveland to play its bullpen 4 days in a row. Advantage Cubs if it works out that way. Didn't even mention Arrieta into the NL park for another advantage.

Getting a pitcher out of the game in 3.2 is usually a good thing...only scoring 2 runs off 8 base runners in 4 innings, not so good.

I'm probably in the minority in that I think Buck is generally OK and doesn't have an anti-Cubs bias. I think he's particularly good on calls of a game's bigger moments. What I don't like about him is the same thing I don't like about many national broadcasters...the slavish devotion to narratives. At one point last night, Buck said, "Cubs fans are tired of hearing about curses and goats," etc., and yet...he brought it up. Unrelated, my guess is that Schwarber doesn't play the field. Be interesting to see what happens.

During the last series, I glanced at a couple Dodgers message boards, and they seemed to think he was drooling over the Cubs the whole time. It may be more illuminating about the human psyche than about Joe Buck in particular. That said, Game One of this series is the only one I've watched on TV so far all postseason, so I can't speak beyond being mildly irritated by him that night.

He doesn't seem biased against the Cubs to me or anything like that. Like any play-by-play guy, he likes to talk more than I like to listen. Mostly I'm watching the game and listening to the crowd noise, caring more about the camera work than the patter. I could do with less discussion of this or that obscure world-series "record," like how many hitters a pitcher struck out in the first three innings of a WS game.

Slavish devotion to narratives is definitely one of the big problems of Joe Buck (though he has others). But the other half of the problem is the national broadcast itself. It's 2016 and I'm streaming these games online anyway. I'd by *far* prefer to be able to stream my home team broadcasting crew than listen to any TBS, FOX, or ESPN broadcast that is aimed at viewers who don't necessarily follow either team. Just when the games reach peak importance, MLB starts addressing a fan group that is way less invested.

The way Schwarber came in and did the impossible makes me think it's way too risky to put him in Left. For one thing, he's gonna suck out there. He hasn't practiced routes iin 6 months. He's a natural hitter. Clearly. In fact, we saw why the Yankees wanted to pry him lose even though he was recovering from major injury. That's good enough reason to keep him in a strictly pinch hitting role. Please, please do not risk this amazing young talent to another injury at this point in his career. He'll have plenty of more World Series opportunities. I really believe that.

Listening to a lot of coverage this morning and not much mention of what a fine job Arrieta did last night. It seemed he was on the same page with the ump and that helped - curve ball seemed better than usual too.

Great player and by all accounts a great all around guy. I tend to think the Cubs will be fine without him overall, but certainly lowers the margin of error for any more issues or injuries to come. Yuck.
Don't worry, blockhead from April 2016, Schwarber will actually return in time to play in games 1 and 2 of the world series.

Something to keep in mind about Anthony Rizzo is that he is presently signed through the 2021 season (with a "team friendly" $14.5M club option each season or $2M buy-out for both 2020-21), but if he finishes Top 2 in MVP anytime 2013-19, Rizzo can opt-out after 2020.

"According to Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Christian Bethancourt (SD) was recently clocked at 97 mph while facing live hitters in Arizona. Bethancourt has also been developing a changeup as he prepares to work as a pitcher in the Panama Winter League" neat. he has to develop another pitch and some control, but a high 90s fastball is a nice place for the ex-catcher to start. it was only a few years ago he was a high end catching prospect.

I'm not in any inner circle on this but I believe any OK to resume baseball activities came from KS' orthopedic surgeon that performed the knee surgery, Dr. Daniel Cooper. He is the lead/head surgeon for the Dallas Cowboys. The Lateral collateral ligament/ACL combo is more of a football injury and that is why Schwarber landed where he did (in Dallas). I doubt any of the Cubs team Doctors, i.e. Dr. Gryzlo was going to give a final say alone on early/aggressive advancement of activity for Kyle Schwarber when they didn't do the procedure and probably had relatively less experience with repair/reconstruction of that particular ligament combo on a high end athlete like KS. I'm not certain on the exact reasons for not permitting OF play vs hitting/baserunning. Theo Epstein said some of the specifics which I believe are him repeating what he was told by the doctors. Says he talked to both Drs. Gryzlo and Cooper yesterday. Was expecting 8 month recovery, not 6 months. Says too much risk to play the field. http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=17904451 I could speculate that running. swinging, starting/stopping on the infield dirt is safer than running on OF grass turf, especially since it's been rainy of late. I don't think it would be the fear of collision since that could happen with a slide play. Most of that is straight ahead running (other than rounding a base). The OF play has more pivoting and lateral movement. They obviously felt that hitting, rounding the bases and sliding into a base was OK. Additionally, playing on defense, and standing in the OF for 15 minute stretches, the knee might stiffen up, especially with night game temps whereas they can keep him warmer and looser in the dugout. He can ride a stationary bike if necessary in the dugout/nearby facilities to stay loose. On the Fox broadcast of game 2 they showed Schwarber warming up his bat in some barrel like heating device in the dugout. Thankfully, he didn't stick his knee in that thing. Re-injury could happen at any time so there is going to be some risk. I think I heard that he's wearing a knee brace as added protection, which makes sense. He shouldn't need a brace next season with almost a year of healing. But at 6 months, brace wear would be expected. Still, there is a fine line on what is OK and what is not and it would take an interview with Dr. Cooper to get that answer in detail. “Medically the doctors were very convinced there's just too much risk in playing the outfield because of the dynamic, athletic movements that are unanticipated, your instinct in reacting to balls,” Epstein said. “That isn't the case when you're running the bases. This was not just an ACL tear. This was a complete blowout of his knee, multiple ligaments. An eight-month expected return to play, best-case scenario.”

props to those choosing not to screw fans noted at the bottom of the article. i dunno if i'd want to watch a game with a group of just people who are paying huge loot to "slum it" for a while in order to watch the game "with the people." it sucks for the regulars and just those fans who wanna watch the game with a group of fans.

I just checked on Stub Hub and seats across the aisle from me are going for $3400 EACH for WS game 3. Someone nearby is listing seats at $10K. Crazy, considering it's under that for 2 seats for season tickets (at face value). Given my wait, well over 50 years, to see a WS game, in person, at Wrigley Field... Value to me. Priceless.

    I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…


    Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

    They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

    I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.

    Is it just me or does it seem that official scorers are becoming less likely to call a misplay an error? 

     

    Guess I've hit my cranky old-man phase in life.  "I remember back in the day when an error was an error.  Official scorers have gone soft.  Now where did I put my readers?!!??"

     

    Sidenote, maybe Bellinger should be a little more careful against the Astros.  That was the series last year that a play at wall put him on the IL.

    i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

    i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

    It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

    The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.
