It's a One-Run Win/Loss Two-Game Split for I-Cubs & Smokies at Fitch Park

Todd Glaesmann cracked a two-run triple and a single and scored a run, Stephen Bruno tripled, singled, and scored a run, Jason Vosler belted a solo home run ovr the RF fence, and Jeffrey Baez singled, walked, stole two bases, and scored a run, as the Iowa Cubs (AAA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) edged the Nashville Sounds (AAA affiliate of the Oakland Athletics) 5-4 on Field #4, and Trevor Clifton tossed 3.2 IP of one-run ball with four strikeouts and Trey Martin doubled, singled, stole a base, and scored a run, but a 9th inning rally fell one run short as the Midland RockHounds (A's AA affiliate) hung-on to edge the Tennessee Smokies (Cubs AA affiliate) 4-3 on Field #3, in Cactus League Minor League doubleheader action Wednesday afternoon at the Lew Wolff Training Complex at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

The Cubs temporarily moved-up about a dozen players from lower levels for the two games.

cubs/reds game ended early in the 5th because of rain. schwarb hit a homer...that's about it for the positives. heyward and montero continued their turrible spring batting. i'm over spring training. let's get going on the real thing.

AZP: What's up with Jose Paulino? Haven't read much about him this spring. I'm assuming he's just coming along slowly. Which minor league team are you most excited about? Not that the CHW would ever trade with the CHC, but is it realistic for the Cubs to trade for Quintana without giving up Happ or Jimenez?

Just in my opinion, it wouldn't be realistic to trade for Quintana without giving up Jimenez. He's the only player in the Cubs system who can headline a Quintana deal. Once you start with Jimenez, you're not absolutely trading Happ in that package, but it might be easier than cobbling together a half-dozen arms. The price is very high, and there is no logical reason why the Yankees, Astros, Pirates, Dodgers, or some others would allow the Cubs and their inferior prospect base to win that bidding war.

CHILDERS: Jose Paulino is with the Myrtle Beach squad and has been moved to the bullpen, where his 94 MPH sinker and hard slider should play up.

I actually am most excited about Iowa at this point, only because the prospects below AAA are spread out fairly evenly among the other three full-season affiliates and the short-season teams.

As far Jose Qunitana is concerned, the Cubs would probably have to give up Eloy Jimenez, Dylan Cease, probably either Ian Happ or Jeimer Candelario, and maybe one or two other lesser pieces (Top 20 prospects) as well to even be considered. Remember, Quintana is under control for four more seasons at a very reasonable well below-market salary, the Cubs would have to outbid other clubs who are interested in acquiring him (and there supposedly are several MLB clubs who are genuinely interested), - AND - overcome the natural White Sox bias against trading with the Cubs. Although it would be great to get him, I just don't see the Cubs acquiring Jose Quintana.

Paulino to bullpen? Is this another C.J. Edwards ordeal. Future Top of line starter turned into bullpen pitcher, with the tag of possible "future closer"? That'd be a bummer. I was looking forward to seeing him with Cease and Clifton could do in the future after Lackey retires (maybe not this year after all) and Jake is gone and they're scrapping for pitching because they can't afford to match their expensive no longer kids bats with top of the line expensive pitchers.

I don't remember Paulino ever being thought of as a top of the line starter. He was always a slightly built lefty with good velocity and one decent breaking ball but not multiple secondaries that tracked average or better. That's a reliever's profile usually. I don't know why exactly he was moved off of starting by the Cubs, but it doesn't come as a great shock to me. He was never mentioned to be on the same level as the Cease/De La Cruz/Clifton crowd, just as a promising, young lefty with a couple of good pitches.

beyond all of that, when you're soon to be 22 and you haven't thrown more than 75 innings in your career you're probably not meant to be a starter. he's had a few run-ins with injuries, both major in the past and small somewhat recently, that hasn't helped that workload. there's also supposedly on/off command issues, but that seems to be a minor(ish) issue he's expected to outgrow. that said, i've never seen the guy pitch...just heard of both his promise and battles with injuries for years.

CRUNCH: Jose Paulino hasn't had any injuries in his career. His problem has been fastball command and the inability (thus far) to learn an off-speed pitch to add to his 94 MPH sinker and hard-slider. He actually threw 99 innings last season including 24 IP in EXST Cubs games (which although they are not "official" games, they are just as real as AZL or Eugene games). i thought he had an elbow thing 3-4 years ago and on/off again "shut down for rest" periods the past few years. i may be mixing up those "shut down for rest" periods for him working extended spring, though. i could be mixing him up with someone else, too. i've only casually followed his progress. either way, your eyes and ears are way better on the situation and if his stamina is fine to start, that's that no matter what.

K-DUB: Jose Paulino has the stamina to start, he just never developed an off-speed pitch, and so the Cubs apparently feel it's time to just let him be a two-pitch LHRP and maybe move faster through the system. I think the idea that he is "slightly-built" comes from being 6'2 165 when he signed as a 16-year old in 2011, but he's put on at least 15-20 pounds over the past six years.

Happ continues to impress. I know he needs to play, which means he heads to the minors, but he could solve the LaStella/Szczur conundrum -- LH vs. RH, IF vs. OF -- he does all of those things.

    masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

    I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

    That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

    Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

    I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
    I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
    I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
    That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
    I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
