Cubs @ Red Sox: Lackey vs Wright (Game 23)

CHC (12-10): RHP John Lackey (1-3, 4.88)
BOS (12-10):  RHP Steven Wright (1-2, 8.66)
First pitch: 3:05pmCST

Lackey gave up 5 ER in 6 innings and lost in Cincinnati on Sunday. He hasn't faced his former team since 2008. The Red Sox are 14-47 (.298) against him. Pedroia is 6-16, and Ramirez has a HR. For his career, he's 31-23 with a 4.45 at Fenway.

Wright had a six-inning inning outing of one-run ball to beat the Rays, but his other three starts have been ugly, including giving up 8 ER in 1.1 innings against the Orioles. For a knuckleballer, that's called not having it. None of the Cubs have faced him. This should be fun. Javy is already swinging...

Hendricks, who flips with Anderson to pitch on normal rest, opposes Rodriguez in the night game tomorrow.

Go Cubs!

Quick aside....another pointless Bulls season comes to a close. The #1 draft pick never played, the mid-season trade of Taj Gibson and Doug McDermott yielded a player who was not on the playoff roster, no player development at all, and another embarrassing and heartless playoff exit. At least the Bears drafted some big kid from a school nobody has ever heard of. Theo should be given control of all Chicago sports teams, except maybe the Blackhawks. My son was at Fenway last night -- said it felt like playoff game. Kimbrall's pitches to Russell were unfair -- 99mph at the top of the zone.

zobrist argues balls/strikes (rather, the high strike zone) with bill welke and doesn't get run for it. good for bill welke for taking the complaining without running a guy in the 1st over something that's been a long running welke issue...his favoring of a "too high" strike zone.

...and here we go again. Cubs fall behind by 3+ runs and try to battle back. Seems to a daily occurrence.

schwarb the leadoff hitter is starting to look a little sketchy while heyward's single/walk-heavy game with a touch of speed is making him look like a little better lead-off candidate. btw, heyward still doesn't have a double this year...3HR, 1 triple.

at this point in his career and his paycheck i hope he couldn't care less where he bats if he's called on to do so even if he's not "comfortable" doing it. he's been a different hitter the past 3+ seasons with multiple plate approaches to go with it. he's been cool playing CF this year when he strongly prefers RF...if called to lead off, i hope he gets over his issues and slots in ready to go. that one season where he hit 27 homers that he's been pressed to chase for so long seems to be a lost cause. he's entering his 8th year and he's only hit over 15 HR twice (27 and 18). that said, he seems to have an issue doing better than .350+ ob% in most of his better years, too. it's hard to say what he's currently capable of doing. it's just that schwarb isn't looking so steady up top and heyward is at least getting on base with some sort of regularity in this young season.

Coming out of Spring Training, there was a lot of concern about the back end of the bullpen. Davis, Edwards, Rondon (!) and Koji have combined to pitch 38 innings giving up a total of 3ER, for a nifty combined ERA of 0.71. Strop and Grimm continue to be Strop and Grimm, meaning you never know what you will get on a daily basis. If the starters can find their groove, the Cubs could go on a nice streak.

Closer mentalities are weird but seem to be pretty consistent in that dudes need those high pressure closing situations to succeed. That was my concern for Rondon moving out of the closer role. Maybe meaningless spring games just don't give them that same edge? Although Rondon should have been better in the WBC but still it's an idea.

Seems like Jed was trying to corner the market on mediocre infielders with last names starting with "M" in acquiring Madrigal, Mastroboney and Zach McKinstry.

At least he hasn't given any of them a Bote-esque extension.

    AZ Phil:
Rookie ball (ACL) starts on May 4th. Do yo think Ramon and Rosario (maybe Delgado) stay in Mesa for the month of May, then go to MB if all goes "solid"?

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.
