Cubs @ Marlins: Arrieta vs Locke (Game 72)

CHC (36-35): RHP Jake Arrieta (6-5, 4.64)
MIA (32-38): LHP Jeff Locke (0-2, 4.58)
First pitch: 6:10pmCST

Arrieta took the loss in Pittsburgh on Saturday (4.2 IP, 2 ER, 7 K, 2 BB). He beat the Marlins at Wrigley earlier this month, holding them to 2 ER over 6 innings. For their careers, they are 9-52 (.173) against him. Stanton is 2-8 with a HR.

Jake has been dealing with a nasty thumb cut/blister issue since Spring Training. If the Cubs had any depth, he might have been on the DL for it by now. When Hendricks comes back, maybe they want to shut him down to let it heal.

Locke had a no-decision in Atlanta his last time out, giving up 3 ER in 4 innings. It was only his fourth start of the season. Overall, the Cubs are 46-134 (.343) against the former Pirate. Rizzo is 11-29 (379) with 5 HRs.

Lackey (5-7) versus Urena (5-2) tomorrow at the same time.

Go Cubs!

Hoo, boy. Sweaty Jake pitching in Miami in late June. Heads up behind home plate!

When Zobrist comes back, they should send Schwarber down and have him work on hitting to the opposite field. He never hits singles because he pulls everything into the shift -- he only hits doubles and HRs because the shift doesn't really impact them. To be fair, he probably hasn't had to deal with the shift much in his career, as he was an unknown quantity in 2015 and in the WS last year, and spent the whole offseason rehabbing his knee. It's late June and he has the lowest BA in MLB -- only 4 players are below .200, and nobody other than Schwarber (.171) is below .188. Time to try something new. I would love to see Happ LF, Baez 2B and Almora CF most days, with Zobrist playing 3-4 times a week at LF/RF/2B. The daily random lineup generator is probably OK for veterans, but I think kids need to get in a rhythm. Joe says it "keeps guys fresh", which makes sense for older players but not for a bunch of 25-year old kids. They can't play a few hours of baseball every day?

If you send Schwarber down, I could see them calling up Caratini who has been swinging a hot bat all year - Willson could get more starts in LF on days he's not catching. Also would consider sending LaStella down for Zagunis, particularly with JHey still on the mend.

Kapman reporting Schwarber sent to the minors - no info on corresponding move on whose coming up.

OF Mark Zagunis and RHRP Dylan Floro supposedly getting called-up to replace Kyle Schwarber (optioned to AAA) and Jason Heyward (10-day DL retro 6/19).

Zagunis is an OBP machine (career .400 OBP in minors) with developing power (on pace to hit 20+ HR at AAA in 2017). He is also interesting because he was a catcher in college at Virginia Tech and in his first season in pro ball, and while he doesn't have the defensive skills to be a front-line MLB catcher or even a back-up backstop (and he supposedly has no interest in being one), he at least does know the position, and could be an ideal #3 ("emergency") catcher on a Joe Maddon team, especially if Kyle Schwarber is not on the 25.

Adding Zagunis to the 40-man roster will require a corresponding roster move. So the Cubs will either have to DFA a player (probably either Brooks, Frankoff, Leathersich, or Pena), or recall Mills, Rosario, or Zastryzny from AAA and place one of them on the MLB 60-day DL.

.320/.362/.552 20 doubles, 12 homers in 257 PA... 0.4 WAR WAR continues to absolutely hate matt kemp over his 275-ish OF chances a year in LF no matter what he does with the bat. i wouldn't want the guy in CF at all, and he's not a good RF'r either, but you'd think the guy does nothing but trip over his shoelaces and pick 4-leaf clovers in the OF.

Why is only 1 LHP still in the pen? Pena and Floro up before Rosscup surprises me. Does Zagunis go back down when Zobrist is activated? I thought Javy was considered to be an emergency catcher.

CHITOWNMVP01: I would think Felix Pena or Dylan Floro will probably be optioned to Iowa if Zobrist is reinstated from the DL tomorrow. The Cubs might feel they need an extra bullpen arm tonight, but I can't see them carrying 14 pitchers for more than a day or two.

There is no way the Cubs would add Zagunis to the MLB 40-man roster (when the roster is already full) and then option him to Iowa the next day and burn one of his three option years (presuming he would spend at least 20 days on optional assignment). They would have just called up Candelario for a day if that was the plan.

Mark Zagunis has FAR more experience as a catcher than Javy Baez does. (Baez was a catcher his sophomore year in HS, while Zagunis was a front-line catcher in college and in his first year in pro ball). Baez would probably be the #4 armageddon extreme emergency catcher.

Again, Zagunis will NOT be a front-line or even #2 catcher in MLB, but he can catch in a pinch. He knows the position very well, even though he's not very good at it.

I as well am surprised that Caratini didn't get a shot. Theo/Jed LOVE him and he is a hitting machine. Plus, he could potentially knock out another Cardinal organization pitcher when the Cubs play the Cards in July.

Rosscup DFA'd. Zagunis added to 40-man. Very interesting. Rosscup never did pan out and the injuries certainly didn't help.

unless he's injured i don't quite get this move... maybe he's showing something recently the cubs didn't like... maybe they've gauged the market and expect him to slip through waivers... maybe he's about to be part of an expected/known trade or something... i have no idea... deception lefty with a 93mph fastball and a slider. *shrug* they recently tried to stretch him out in iowa and abandoned it.

I think a guy who's spent 7 years in the Cubs minor league system and is now 29 years old is why he's getting cut. He was granted FA after 2016 season, and then resigned with the Cubs. I imagine that new contract maybe only goes to the end of this season? He has no future with this team... and sadly for Rosscup, probably no future with any MLB team.

Zac Roscup had shoulder surgery in March 2016 and missed the entire season. He was then non-tendered by the Cubs on 12/2, and subsequently was re-signed to a 2017 minor league contract with an NRI to Spring Training and a chance to continue his rehab uninterrupted in Mesa. Rosscup's rehab moved along ahead of schedule, and he began the 2017 season at AAA Iowa. He has pitched very well there, and he was added back to the Cubs MLB 40-man roster (and 25-man roster) on May 22nd, before being optioned back to Iowa the next day. Rosscup would seem to have some value as an MLB lefty reliever, maybe not to the Cubs, but to somebody. After all, the Cubs did not retain Ryan Buchter after the 2015 season (when he could have been added to the MLB 40-man roster after the season to keep him from being a minor league 6YFA), and he has done a good job as a lefty reliever with the Padres the past couple of seasons.

Prior to this week, ALL of Zac Rosscup's 2017 outings at Iowa were followed by at least two days off. He finally threw in back-to-back games this week (Monday-Tuesday), and a lefty reliever can't pitch in the big leagues if he can't work two-three days in a row. So it's possible that Rosscup just can't bounce-back fast enough to be a useful MLB reliever (at least at this point in time), and he doesn't have the stamina or pitch-repertoire to be a starter (at least as far as the Cubs are concerned).

BTW, Rosscup cannot elect free-agency if he is outrighted to the minors, although he would be eligible to be a minor league 6YFA post-2017 if he is outrighted but then not added back to the MLB 40-man roster by 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series.

I think Rosscup probably will get claimed off waivers (and then possibly immediately optioned to the minors by his new club) -- if he isn't traded.

Rosscup has a 12.7 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9. 39 K/8 BB in 27.2 IP. I wouldn't be surprised if another team claims him.

No matter what his 2017 AAA numbers say, his 57K, 32BB, 1.585 WHIP, 4.94 FIP, 5.32 ERA in 47.1 IP for his career MLB stats, says he's a AAAA player at best. He may be able to survive with a bottom 1/3rd teir MLB team's bullpen for a couple years. Again, he's 29 years old and past his prime, mostly because he's never gonna have one.

Better than offense, Arrieta making it through 6 with 1ER and only 74 pitches is a nice change.

cubs win! MIL wins...STL loses...

Classic baseball -- Cards had an amazing win last night, lose to a lousy team tonight. Cubs had a dispiriting 2-hit loss last night and erupt for 11 runs tonight.

"According to Patrick Pinak of MLB.com, Zobrist has "attempted" to hit but still doesn't feel comfortable. "We're not quite there yet," said manager Joe Maddon. "He's tested it regularly. He's still not satisfied." Zobrist landed on the DL with wrist inflammation earlier this month. There's no timetable for his return."

Walker was a complimentary piece who was well past his prime. Edmonds, Holliday, Ozzie Smith and a few others were good trades. Notably, they have almost always been quiet in the free agent market. But the fundamental workings of the organization were always based primarily upon the constant output of a well oiled minor league organization. That organization has ground to a halt. And when did that hard stop start to happen? Right at the beginning of the Goldschmidt/Arenado era, perpetuated by the Contreras signing, followed by the rotation purchases during the last offseason. The timing is undeniable and, in my mind, not coincidental.

Again, we are all saying that player development became deemphasized. I’m just linking it directly to the recent trades and involvement in the free agent market. I don’t see how the two concepts can be decoupled.

  • Charlie (view)

The Cards also traded for both Jim Edmonds and Larry Walker. It's the developing part that has fallen off. Of course, it could also be the case that there are no more Matt Carpenters left to pull out of the hat.

Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system
    Injuries are mounting everywhere!!

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.
