Cubs @ Marlins: Lackey vs Urena (Game 73)

CHC (37-35): RHP John Lackey (5-7, 4.98)
MIA (33-38): RHP Jose Urena (5-2, 3.64)
First pitch: 6:10pmCST

Lackey won in Pittsburgh on Sunday (6 IP, 1 ER, 4 K, 3 BB). He gave up 5 ER in 6 innings and took the loss to the Marlins at Wrigley earlier this month, in a match-up with Urena, who went 5 and gave up 3 ER and won the game. Overall, the Marlins are 64-207 (.309) against Lackey. Bour is 2-6 with 2 HR.

Urena had a no-decision in Atlanta his last time out (6 IP, 2 ER, 4 K, 2 BB). The Cubs are 7-27 (.259) against him. Happ is 1-2 with a HR, and Rizzo is 2-4.

Lester (4-4) versus Nicolino (0-1) tomorrow at 3:10pmCST.

Go Cubs!

im glad that association is really broad speculation based on an interest by the cubs years ago. lackey is doing a heck of a job by himself giving up too many homers without getting cueto in on it.

Alex Lange today: 115 pitches in 7.1 IP, 2 hits, 1 run (ER), 4 BB (including a bases loaded, run scoring walk), 8 Ks. Had much better fastball command today than prior CWS start along with killer hard curve. Was the benificiary of a missed call by the umpiring crew - I think it occurred in the run scoring inning. A line drive down the left field line and off the wall was ruled foul (TV replay showed it hit yellow and was fair - should have been a double). Umpire could have reviewed it and declined to. Dems the breaks.

Lange looked pretty good. He's got a nice fastball, but at times it did look somewhat flat. His curve is very nice 12 to 6 type curve, with lots of action. I watched that game, and the umps really blew that call. The amazing part was nobody was suspicious that it was that poor of a call at the moment. All the umps and OSU manager and coaches just flat out missed it. But the replay was obvious. The funny part is seeing how the left fielder was going for the ball after seeing it hit off the yellow line on the wall, but as soon as he heard the foul call, he quit on it. The blown call no doubt saved Lange's inning for him. As soon as a runner was on and he was pitching from the stretch, he wasn't quite the same that inning. If I'm remembering correctly, that was the inning when he pitched from the stretch where I noticed his fastball was kind of flat. He definitely has lots of potential.

"Julio Urias will undergo surgery to repair the left anterior capsule in his pitching shoulder." expected to miss 12+ months...yow.

cubs shut out for the 6th time this season. that's last year's total for the entire season.

2 runs, then 11 runs, then zero runs. Baseball, man -- you never know what you're gonna get. Good news: another good outing for Lackey. Bad news: wasting a good outing from Lackey.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

    PCA called up.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
