Cubs @ Marlins: Montgomery vs Volquez (Game 75)

CHC (38-36): LHP Mike Montgomery (1-3, 2.26) 
MIA (34-39): RHP Edinson Volquez (3-8, 4.19) 
First pitch: 12:10pmCST

Montgomery kept the Padres off the board for 6 innings for the win on Tuesday. He pitched 3.1 scoreless innings out of the pen backing up Butler on June 5 against the Marlins, for his second save of the season. Overall, they are 3-12 (.250) against him. Ozuna, Riddle, and Ichiro have the hits.

Volquez was the unexpected hurler of the season’s first no-hitter, which he did on June 3 against the high-scoring Arizona bats. He’s had three games since then and has been roughed up in the last two of them, giving up 10 ER in 8.2 total innings. 

The Cubs are 22-84 (.262) against him. Rizzo, who is probably slated to lead off again after being rested yesterday, is 4-10.

After the game, it’s off to Washington for the real test. Tomorrow is Butler (3-2) and Gonzalez (7-1) at 6:05pmCST. We’ll also see Scherzer, Strasburg, and Ross.

Assuming Monty is done after 6: last 4 starts = 21 innings, 4ER. An error and bad luck in the first has him down 3-2. I think this was what the Cubs were thinking when they got him.

Win Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Lose Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The 2017 Cubs in a nutshell. Sheesh. Hopefully, they can carry that into Washington, where a split would be a hell of a good outcome, considering the Cubs face both Scherzer and Strasburg.

tebow moves to high A ball to help make the owners more money on ticket/merch sales in a fresh market or to see if he's ready to keep moving through the system...whatever you want to believe. .222/.311/.340 3hr, 14 doubles, 69K in 241PA with 7 errors in LF in 43 games. he turns 30 in mid-august.

I wanted to post about that... glad you brought it up Crunch! Those were exactly my thoughts when I read about it this morning. The well has run dry in Columbia, so move him up a level to squeeze every dollar out of the next market, and now in Florida (management will make a killing). I wonder how the kids he plays with feel about that? I don't know a damn thing about the Mets farm system, but there's got to be a kid who's more deserving of a promotion who actually some day might break into the big leagues. And if not, what does that say about the talent in their farm system. And how will that impact the kids who've been busting their asses chasing their dream when they finally do move up through the system and some day reach free agency? See you later Mets... maybe your boy Tebow can replace me. Oh yeah he's still in AA praying to hit above .220. Also, despite all his bad offensive numbers, let's not overlook his .879 fielding percentage in the outfield.

in today's game, ichiro became the oldest player to start a game in CF. neat. ---- Manager Don Mattingly had no idea of the feat when he penciled Ichiro's name on the lineup card. "Seriously?" Mattingly said. "I thought about it though in the first: 'We have a 40-something out there in center.' But he doesn't play like that. Jesse Rogers saying the Candy man is getting a callup. I would imagine if Addy cant go atleast as a bench guy tomorrow (honestly if the shoulder has been bothering him for the whole year why not try a DL stint) that Chesny Young (not in the Iowa line up on Sunday) or Elliot Soto would also be called up to back up Javy since there are no other players on the roster who can ideally play SS (i think KB had an inning or 2 there last year in a blow out).

    suzuki says he injured his oblique running to 1st, not swinging.  okay.  it's gonna be that kind of 2024 cubs year, huh?

    i would say that's good news compared to screwing it up swinging, but i'm not familiar with the recovery time of people screwing up their oblique by running.

    right side is at least different from his left side oblique injury last year.
