White Sox @ Cubs: Rodon vs Lackey (Game 99)

CHW (39-57): LHP Carlos Rodon (1-3, 5.75)
CHC (51-47): RHP John Lackey (6-9, 5.04)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Lackey, who’s announced he’s not moving to the bullpen, like all good team-players do, won in Atlanta last Tuesday, going 5 and giving up 1—as a starter does. Overall, the White Sox are 16-56 (.286) against him—as a starter. Cabrera is 13-39 with a HR. (Starter.)

Rodon lost to the Dodgers his last time out (3.2 IP, 5 ER, 4 K, 3 BB), his fourth appearance of the season, after getting a late start due to left biceps bursitis. The Cubs are 1-5 against him. Heyward has the hit.

Arrieta (9-7) and Shields (2-2) go tomorrow on the South Side at 7:00pmCST.

Go Cubs!

bryant getting ejected in the 4th for arguing balls and strikes. i would be pissed if it happened more often...may be his 1st time. still stings...need all the wins they can get over here. fwiw, bryant was very correct...not even close. still, who's sitting on the bench in the 4th? sigh.

Cubs going for club record today: 14 LOB through 4. Nice! Really, they should have at least 2-3 more runs by now. Can't blame the ump for poor hitting and keeping the Sox around.

11Ks in 4 innings. Sox should let the guy throw 200 pitches and go for the K record.

I'm all in favor of an automatic ejection if you hit 3 batters in an inning.

Nice of John Lackey to make things interesting over the next two days by hitting three batters in a row ... and somehow getting out of it with no runs scored.

I believe the Cubs have had a man on second with no outs 4 times in 5 innings. 2ks, ground out to short and a flyout and guy still at 2nd with one out each inning.

zobrist in RF seems to be nearing the end of it's lifespan. he hasn't looked good there for a while. the routine stuff looks like extraordinary effort and the extraordinary stuff doesn't come close.

Should have pinch hit with Arrieta in the fifth if Joe's concerned about the bench. Very predictable start to the sixth.

edwards! 2nd/3rd, 0 out...strands them both with 2Ks and a groundout.

I hope Schwarber gets it together soon. I really do. Maybe this year is just a throw away for the young man?

@Blockhead -I remember in the terrible days of the broadcast team of Chip Carey and Joe Carter, that Joe said they used to call it Hawaii 5-0 back in his day when a guy would strike out 5 times in a game. Teammates would razz the player by putting a can of pineapples in his locker, apparently...

Ha. Hawaii 5-0! Brilliant. I caught a little bit of Ryno on the flagship as they were wrapping up and a caller asked specifically about Schwarbs and Javy. Ryno said it seems as if they both are pressing and not driving pitches on other parts of the plate. So, just flailing at fastballs and junk out of the zone. He said they really need to be studying Rizzo who chokes up when he needs to, trying to do anything to make contact. They really are immature, and are showing that they both need more seasoning. Its not gonna happen in-season. The same seems true with Ian Happ who is getting exposed with off speed pitches and stuff off the plate. Sorry youngsters but not every pitcher is going to throw it right down the middle at 85 for you with no movement.

EJax STILL not helping the Cubs!!! Losing 6-0 to Brewers. What a shithead. EDIT: Make that 7-0

I thought Rodon looked pretty impressive. Unhittable (and uncontrollable) tailing fastball and the best breaking stuff I've seen since Sale. I vaguely recall that the Cubs were interested in him but their #4 pick wasn't good enough. The Sox picked third.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
