Cubs @ White Sox: Arrieta vs Shields (Game 100)

CHC (52-47): RHP Jake Arrieta (9-7, 4.11)
CHW (39-58): RHP James Shields (2-2, 5.79)
First pitch: 7:00pmCST

Arrieta gave up 2 ER in 6 innings but had a no-decision against the Cardinals on Friday. He’s 2-1 with a 2.13 in his four July starts. Overall, these White Sox are 9-45 (.200) against him. Abreu is 3-8.Shields is doing a pretty fine job following up his awful 2016 with another awful season. Only 2 of his 9 starts have been quality. He gave up 6 runs in 4.1 innings in Kansas City for his last outing. The best part of his season was when he missed two months with a right lat strain.

The Cubs are 11-49 (.224) against him. Rizzo is 3-8, and Russell is 2-4. The over-under on his Ks with this Cubs team is 9, 12 if Baez starts.

Lester (7-6) and Pelfrey (3-7) end the series tomorrow at 7:10pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal Yu Darvish’s 10-team no-trade list, per sources: BAL, BOS, CHC, CLE, COL, CWS, DET, OAK, PIT, TOR. Free to go to LAD, NYY, HOU, all others.

Hope it ain't deja vu all over again. Last year, on July 26, Shields went 7.2 innings versus Cubs allowing 4 hits and 0 runs as the Wsux beat the Cubs 3-0.

Brett Anderson DFA'd. No surprise. Still better in a playoff race than Edwin Jackson or Caleb Smith.

The timing of the Anderson DFA means he can only be traded up until the MLB non-waiver trade deadline (4 PM EDT on on 7/31). A player on an MLB Reserve List ((40-man roster) cannot be traded on the two days immediately after the trade deadline, because the trade deadline is actually the end of a waiver period (4 PM Eastern on 7/31). The next waiver period commences at 5 PM Eastern on 7/31, and a player cannot be placed on Trade Assignment Waivers until 2 PM (Eastern) on 8/1, and the waiver claiming period is 47 hours. So a player placed on Trade Waivers at 2 PM (Eastern) on 8/1 won't clear until 1 PM (Eastern) on 8/3, and Anderson's DFA expires on 8/2. So if he is not traded by the trade deadline, the Cubs will have to release him on Tuesday or Wednesday, and the Cubs would be on the hook for the balance of Anderson's $3.5M 2017 salary, minus the prorated portion of the MLB minimum salary should he subsequently sign a major league contract with another MLB club (or if he signs a minor league contract and then is subsequently promoted to an MLB 40-man roster). The Performance Bonus is also pro-rated, so the Cubs would be responsible for paying 55% (or $262,500) of the first bonus ($500K if 11 GS) if it is eventually reached since Anderson made six MLB starts with the Cubs in April-May. If I had to guess, I would think Anderson will get released, will sign a minor league contract with another MLB club and get assigned to AAA, and will get called-up to the big club no later than September 1st (possibly sooner).

Caratini catching Jake tonight - Willson getting a rare night off (at least not starting). But for KB and Russell, all left handed hitters in the lineup.

Miguel Montero was tied for the worst "pop time" of any MLB catcher in 2017 prior to getting released. So while his throwing wasn't great, it was exacerbated by the difficulty he had getting out of his crouch and then making the throw (probably due to his chronic lower-back problem) and in many cases he didn't even attempt a throw. Caratini's throwing problems at AA Tennessee last year were mechanical in nature related to his footwork, and the Cubs were able to fix the problem. So while Caratini isn't Contreras, he throws OK. Not great, but certainly better than Montero. However, Montero is a much better receiver than Caratini, and it isn't easy catching Arrieta's electric stuff. So I would be more concerned about WP and PB with Caratini tonight than SB. I don't think having a rookie catch Arrieta (especially a converted third-baseman who has only been catching for 3-1/2 years) is particularly smart, but apparently the Cubs decided to give Contreras the night off tonight instead of the game this past Monday when Caratini could have caught Hendricks.

Seems kind of an odd lineup: - Jay in LF and Happ in CF, not the other way around? - Heyward leading off, Jay hitting 6th? Hope it works.

alright...let's do this. j.shields with 8hr and an ERA of nearly 9.00 in his last 5 games.

Not watching the game, but just by distance and a few plays I've seen looks like the Cubs are regularly crushing balls, but right to the fielders. That true?

Yu Darvish surrendered 10 earned runs tonight - yowza No doubt purposely driving his value down so the Cubs can swing him for Brett Anderson and some Patsy Cline 45s.

Brewers gave up 7 in the 8th to the Nats. In other news, the Cardinals are pesky little gnats that don't go away.

"Rockies acquired RHP Pat Neshek from the Phillies for INF Jose Gomez, RHP J.D. Hammer and RHP Alejandro Requena." phillies going for bulk. nice haul. none are expected stars, but all have good "under the radar" upside. a starter, a reliever, and a middle infielder...

cubs win! sole possession of 1st!

Nice to have Monty back in the bullpen. Effective, and he gives everybody else the night off.

    Yeah it is.....sorry......closers don't throw 89mph

It would be unique for sure.

But CP can't be HR susceptible

That's what Alzolay has right now and that's what Kyle has no matter the situation.

Supposedly Happ said on a radio show he's good to go

I hadn't read that anywhere from the usual accounts, so this could be off.

    If true, Canario goes down.

Hmmm. Maybe my idea of transitioning Hendricks into a closer role isn’t so crazy.

Mervis and Wesneski getting promoted aaccording to Tommy Birch from Des Moines Register.

    So Happ to the IL

    Maybe Hendricks to IL ????

    Mervis/Cooper are DH platoon

    Wisdom, Canario, Tauchman share LF/RF

I wonder if Busch has ever played LF?

    I don't believe he has

“I respect his track record of what he’s accomplished,” Counsell said on Sunday morning. “And you go through these. He’s gone through -- maybe not this particular stretch -- but stretches where you’re not pitching the way you want to and struggling. And you figure it out.” -- Counsell on Hendricks

    fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...

i respect his track record of no longer being in the rotation.  in 2016 he threw 2 innings out of the pen, his only work out of the pen.  the cubs won the world series that year.  let's repeat that magic.  the formula is obvious.  stats don't lie.  etc etc whatever...

small sample size and all, but how about this craziness...

"Entering Sunday, Hendricks had allowed an .843 OPS against hitters in their initial plate appearance, followed by a 1.056 OPS in a second meeting and a 2.449 OPS when seeing batters for a third time."

Phil: Great to see what Rosario is doing!

Do you think having Rosario may have influenced/impacted the front office's decision on including Hope in the trade for Busch at all?

it's so crazy we got a new "barnstorming" harlem globetrotters-type baseball product that was introduced less than 5 years ago and is wildly popular all over the nation.

a notion left long in the past, unearthed, polished for modern audiences and popular as ever.

No question right now Alfonsin Rosario is one of the Cubs Top 20 prospects (probably Top 15). Rosario is to the Cubs what Zyhir Hope is to the Dodgers.

The Savannah Bananas will be playing the Party Animals at Sloan Park in Mesa this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The games are sold out (15,000+ each night), and berm tickets are going for well over $100.

RAISIN: In the game versus the A's at Fitch Park last Friday, Mule threw half FB and half SL (16/16), and one CH (which coincidentally was the only hard-hit ball off him -- a near HR line-drive double off the LF fence). FB was 91-94 and the SL (really more of a "slurve") was 80-82, and he got three swing & miss on each pitch (six swing & miss total out of his 20 strikes). So I think it is safe to say that right now, Mule is strictly a two-pitch pitcher (FB/SL),
