Cubs @ Reds: Montgomery vs Wojciechowski (Game 125)

CHC (67-57): LHP Mike Montgomery (3-6, 3.64)
CIN (53–73): RHP Asher Wojciechowski (3-2, 5.36)
First pitch: 6:10pmCST

Montgomery pitched 4.1 of scoreless ball in relief of Lester against the Reds his last time out, letting the Cubs climb back into the game till the bullpen couldn’t hold it. He’s 2-4 with a 3.60 on the road this season, which closely matches what he’s done at Wrigley.

In 5 appearances against the Reds this season, he’s 0-1 with a 5.51 ERA. Overall, the Reds are 19-67 (.284) against him. Duvall is 3-7 with a HR.

Wojciechowski lost to the Cubs at Wrigley on the 14th (3.2 IP, 7 ER, 5 K, 0 BB). In between, he pitched two innings in relief against in Atlanta, giving up 2 ER. He’s 3-1 with a 3.41 at home this season. The Cubs are 11-21 (.524) against him. Jay is 3-3, and Rizzo is 2-3 with a HR.

Bryant has a contusion on his left wrist after getting hit last night. He's unlikely to play today and will be day-to-day. There's no word on if Maddon is going to let Rizzo start over LaStella at 3B. Anything is possible.

Arrieta (13-8) and Romano (3-5) end the series tomorrow at the same time.

Go Cubs!

Jesse Rodgers reporting that Contreras is doing pre-game sprints, push ups, shuttle drills with Tim Buss in the outfield. Russell running full speed in the outfield. Both took batting practice. Willson also caught Arrieta on the side.

this game is f'n awesome. heyward is feasting off this crappy reds pitching recently (played series @wrigley last week), and by feasting i mean a bunch of shallow singles to RF piercing the infield. his 2 hits in the game (so far) brings him back up over .320 ob% after he was flirting with sub-.300 ob% for a stretch of early august.

Hey fellas. Almost recovered from my World Series hangover. Have they lost a game yet this season?

In reply to by crunch

Hector Rondon was throwing 100 MPH Tuesday night (when  he got one out in relief of Duensing) and he was at 98-99 for the first part of the 9th last night before giving up the last two HR on 97 MPH belt-high FBs, so there is nothing wrong with his velocity. The first HR allowed was off a 92 MPH "slider" that didn't break and other sliders he threw bounced, so when the other team's hitters know you are going to have to throw a strike with your fastball, high-octane gas doesn't help a lot if you can't sustain 99+. Rondon has to rediscover his slider or else he will continue to get hit.

The thing about relievers, though, is that their command and stuff can fluctuate wildly from year-to-year, and so it's entirely possible that Rondon and/or Grimm could be light's out next season. Or not.

But they are both bullpen arsonists right now.

per Tribune: Suzuki MRI results pending from yesterday so we should get a timetable for return later today.

suzuki says he injured his oblique running to 1st, not swinging.  okay.  it's gonna be that kind of 2024 cubs year, huh?

i would say that's good news compared to screwing it up swinging, but i'm not familiar with the recovery time of people screwing up their oblique by running.

right side is at least different from his left side oblique injury last year.

A bit more Jewish take on one of my favorite Cubs, Kenny Holtzman. His 9-0 season while serving in the National Guard and being available to pitch on weekends was one of my coolest teen recollections.

Suzuki out with oblique strain. Canario indeed is called up. No word on Morel so that might be a red herring (or a red digit).

AZ lineup is posted but Counsell is always late to post his lineup.
