TCR Friday Notes

- A couple of quick site modifications with more soon to come. I added a "module" as Drupal calls them, that will automatically fill in the subject line for users when they comment. When you first hit the comment button, it will add "Re: {Title of Post}. If you hit reply to a comment, it will fill-in the subject line with the subject of the comment you are replying to. You can go in and edit them if you wish. If you are replying to someone's comment though, we do ask that you just leave the default because it makes life a lot easier for those viewing comments in the "flat" modes.

- The next tweak is the signature module. It has a few options - the most important is that it will stylize the signature automatically (no more broken tag troubles hopefully). Currently it's set-up to have a small line break and italicize it:

__________________________

Welcome to The New Cub Reporter!

Since the system is doing all the formatting now, I do ask that if you did add a signature, to go in and remove any tags or linebreaks (directly the opposite of what I asked yesterday). I simply typed in: Welcome to the New Cub Reporter! in my signature box without any formatting and what you see above is what is pumped out.

Also, if you change your signature or add one, it will change the signature on all your old comments as well.

Next, your signature will no longer show up in the comment box and you won't have to type around it. If you added a signature to your account, it will automatically attach it to the end of your posts now.

The last note is that after I installed the module, it did take everyone who had a signature yesterday and duplicated them in your comments. An unfortunate side-effect, but everything should be working normally from here on.

- The next tweak is I modified some of the HTML tags you can use in the comments now. It should display the full list at the bottom of the comments, but here they are just in case: <a> <em><i> <strong> <b><strike><blockquote> <code><pre>. Let me know if you'd like to add anything else.

- You may have noticed the "Latest Results" block in the upper right. I'm going to spruce up the flag a little, but you get the latest results and the score should always link to its boxscore. Also don't forget the day of game weather on the left, near the bottom of the page.

- Speaking of yesterday's game, I thought pitchers were suppose to be ahead of hitters at this point? Heckuva day for Pie, Godenot and Theriot and a nice start for Fukudome. Save them runs for the Brewers on Opening Day!

- With all the hoopla surrounding the new site yesterday, you may have missed my post rounding up the offseason prospect lists. Be sure to check it out. On a related note, Steve Holley of Inside the Ivy is willing to do another Q&A with us this year. I was hoping to get more reader questions this time around, so drop me a note or place it in the comments if you have something to ask.

- A few more spots are still open for our second MLB Open fantasy league. Reader Big Lowitzki is going to run commish on it, but you can email me if you wish to join. I don't believe the draft time has been set yet.

Enjoy the weekend....

Comments

Those changes make things a bit better. I still miss the numbers on the posts though, but I guess they're not needed so much now. Do you plan to keep the comments embedded in the main post like this or go back to the ole pop-up window like before?

Excellent. Great job on the site so far. It would be cool to have a place to submit photos. Can you attach photos to the comments? Or imbed youtube videos? T Testing...

Nope. No imbedding of youtubeses. Dang. What about photos?

I like the new site. Can I make one humble request...despite any temptations you might find to do so, please don't let people put pictures in their signatures?

Cubs are undefeated!! Put a whipping on many of my Connecticut Defender boys. Not a big surprise, since they were one of the worst teams in AA last year.

Just a mild suggestion. For each new blog entry could you have the titles font enlarged a little bit. Its a but hard to tell when a new article starts and ends.

Oh and if you aren't aware of T-shirt Gate at Bleed Cubbie Blue your missin some funny stuff.

apologies if i have missed this answer elsewhere- is there a set of links for the rest of the cubs blogging world? thanks

Fancy with the logins and all that. I like the old way with the poster's name bigger; maybe swap the font on that with the subject? Don't need to see Re: in huge letters 876 times. All in all, this looks absolutely awesome!!

When can we start swearing... isn't that what this change was really about?

I am I allowed to keep my bold signature, Rob? Huh? Please...

Love the W flag in the right corner, but I'll have to avoid the site on the mornings after I work nights until I can watch the game on DVR or online. Small price to pay. As a professional sports journalist, I'm very impressed with the site and the work you guys do.

A-Ram not playing today (already) due to soreness in throwing shoulder accdg to B. Levine. Another reason why signing Brian Roberts will make the team better (at the RIGHT price). He simply is unlikely to play an entire season, or close to it.

Just checking to see if my postings work on your new site. I am not overly impressed with trading 3 to 4 good prospects for a very slight upgrade in Roberts.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

    booooooooooo

also, wisdom and taillon are both in chicago.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
