Free Agent Frenzy Update and More...

I always had this idea about the phrase "and more". When I first started out here in Los Angeles, I was editing commercials for musical artists, not really my thing, I'm more a movie guy, and it didn't help that about 99% of the artists were trash and the music industry is darker than a snuff film.

So we did a lot of compilation albums, soundtracks for stuff like "The Matrix" or all the Grammy artists, etc, stuff you're sure to have seen at some point. And all these albums would list like four to eight of the more popular artists or songs , something like (in your best Don LaFontaine voice) - Marilyn Manson, Deftones, Rob Zombie, Rage Against the Machine, And More!- acknowledging the bands whose agents weren't as good to get them advertised, but at least they made the album. So the sort of inside joke I always had with my bosses at the time was that if I were to ever start a band, I would call it "And More".

Think about it, you'd be listed on nearly every music soundtrack or compilation CD commercial ever done. Do a little viral Internet video and instant buzz for your group. So to the would-be rock stars in our readership looking for a band name, you're welcome, let me know how it goes. And if you don't like "And More", I recommend "Skull-Fuck Cedeno", "Gay Witchcraft", "Bees" or "Johann's Mom".

FA Frenzy update "and more" after the jump...

The lead tightens ever so slightly and if Manny Ramirez goes to the Dodgers. the contest gets quite interesting.

  1. Real Neal - 66
  2. CincyKid - 56
  3. Jackie t, Andrew, Dejon R. - 53
  4. Everyone Else

As for the and more, "Crunch" passes along this Cub-related comic strip, good for a mild chuckle. The strip is called "Get Fuzzy" and is written by a Red Sox fan.

Get Fuzzy

Enjoy the 3-day weekend!

I didn't know you were involved in film. I wrote about half of a screenplay adaptation of Kafka's "The Castle"...that's ok, he wrote half of a book (damn, I'm funny). Think you can get that made for me? ...also, I wanted to start a band called Empathetic Schadenfreude, because it's super pretentious, but I don't play an instrument and I can't sing for shit.

I've got a sister on her way to LA with credits as an Associate Producer, Producer, and Post-Prodcution Coordinator (I think that's right) in TV and Film. She's looking for work. She's been working in Philadelphia (and traveling for shoots) for two years or so. Random outburst of the day. I guess I was directing this toward Rob, not The Joe (she can't help you get your screenplay produced). LA themed thread within this post. Also, The Joe, pretentious bands are the best sort of bands for guys who can't play an instrument or sing for shit, so I don't see what's standing in your way.

note: Get Fuzzy doesn't revolve around the RSox, but the writer/artist of the comic is a RSox/baseball fan and it works it's way into the comic a bit.

I'm partial to the yet-untapped band name Polizia con Vongole. btw I'm heading to the Mall for Inauguration on Tuesday; anyone else? DC Tom, where are you?

Russ Springer let go by the Cardinals. Wish we could dump the awful Vizcaino somehow and replace him with Springer, who is a very nice middle reliever with awesome numbers against RH batters.

OK, I'll admit it. I don't understand the last bubble in the comic. Maybe there should be a 'correct the punchline contest'. I'll start it off with "And that's different how?!?" I'm only first place in that contest until Manny signs, but still it's better than usual when I'm eliminated by Dec 01.

Gordon Wittenmyer/Sun-Times stuff: • • Sources say out-of-options outfielder Felix Pie could be traded as soon as sometime next week, with pitcher Rich Hill -- also facing the same roster limbo -- possibly next to go. • • Cedeno, too, is out of options, and could be on the block if the Cubs determine he won't beat out Micah Hoffpauir for a roster spot or if they acquire another veteran infielder such as Rich Aurilia. The Cubs, by the way, are not strongly pursuing Aurilia, according to insiders, despite some recent reports suggesting otherwise. He's a back-burner option at this point. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/1383060,CST-SPT-cubnt17.ar…

I'm sure I'm in the minority in my opinion but I feel strongly that Fukodome should play center and lead off. I think that with the power expectations taken off him, he'll be a valuable on base + speed guy. I think he'll have a good year. My lineup would be this: Fukodome Theriot Bradley Ramirez Soriano Lee Soto Fontentot Would love to see other guys proposed lineups...

I just was checking out Aaron Miles stats. His career OBP from the 1-slot is mediocre. Statistically, he's done better 2nd, and 7th, respectively. However, I did like looking at his "clutch stats", which I would think are better than average, as well as his OBP in a 3-2 count (over .550), and even 1-2. It would appear as if he has a clue where the zone is, where some players who have led off for the team (not mentioning any names, Soriano) are challenged here.

That'd be great. I would've guessed 14 hr in about 450 ABs, if he got that many. But I think Fontenot should be the starter at 2nd, and Miles should play there against lefties (if he hits). 2nd and 7th sound like the right places to bat Fontenot most days. I would guess that Fukudome, Theriot, Bako, and Miles gather the most ABs batting 8th this year. I would guess Fontenot bats 2nd more than anyone else with Theriot, Miles, or Johnson there against lefties.

i go back to last week or week before cubs like to sign injured pitchers to incentive contracts i stated the cubs should sign m. mulder to incentive laden contract as per buster olney (espn) today mark mulder could be the hidden gem of this years free agent class. he will throw in 2 weeks for teams. hmmmmmm

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

Teheran minor league deal is done, per MLB.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."

Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

Totally agree. The 26 man roster very rarely consists of the 13 best position players and 13 best pitchers.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
-give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

-Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?
