Gabor's Revenge and Other Rumors

This was probably posted in the comments, but Bruce Levine on his blog also said that once the Heilman deal is finished - which will clear a spot on the 40-man roster - the Cubs will sign Gabor Paul II Bako on a one year, $750K contract.

The Cubs are also said to be weighing offers on Danny Noonan...err, Rich Hill, and looking at adding another bench player such as Juan Uribe that could cover 2B, SS, 3B and possibly 1B. The Cub seem determined to make it virtually impossible for Micah Hoffpauir to make the team out of camp.

And if this Peavy deal doesn't happen, the Cubs may try and sign Braden Looper or Randy Wolf, to try and make it virtually impossibe for Sean Marshall to break with the team. A good way to keep his service time down I suppose. Of course, I think odds are high Rich Harden will be doing the Mark Prior-spring-training-DL-trip around March 20th routine because he wasn't quite ready when spring training began.

Comments

I would like to see them give Harden all the time he needs to come back as healthy as he is ever going to be. We need him to provide a boost toward the end of the season, into the playoffs. If he is not ready at the beginning of spring training, plug someone else in there for awhile...

Of course. So it will be like, "getting a new player at the deadline", right?

Exactly! We won't even need to make a trade! (ducks)

Braden Looper and Randy Wolf?

Those are the perfect guys to help us win the Central Division...... in 2002

Gabor's Revenge?

Isn't that what you get from drinking bad water in, like, Serbia?

Jason Marquis, career
4.55 4.39 96 1.425
Era lg era+ whip

Braden Looper, career
3.93 4.28 109 1.350

Umm..., I can think of a lot worse pitchers than Looper for a #5, Aaron B. Why are you thumbing your nose at him? What kind of Dr. are you?

I, for one, was stunned at the success Looper had when he switched to starting. That's a guy who hadn't started a game since A ball, and he was able to put 2 years together with 30 starts. Suprisingly durable. And even pretty effective for a back of the rotation guy, too.

Indeed. As I say, you can do a helluva lot worse.

1. Because I want Peavy on this team

2. Dave Duncan ain't coming with Looper

3. He has had ERA's of 4.94 and 4.19 as a starter and has yet to pitch 200 ip

4. He strikes out less than 5 per 9.

5. It seems like a Jeromy Burnitz instead of Carlos Beltran type of move

Hendry is doing the same thing he's done the last 3 years...loading up on as many pitchers as possible, even though there doesn't seem to be room for all of them. Inevitably someone gets hurt in camp or shits their pants and it all magically works out.

A little part of me wants to see them move Vizcaino and have Heilman in the bullpen with Gregg and Marmol.

So, then, Wade Miller could could get a NRI to ST? (chuckles)

probably a high chance of heilman getting to start.

stamina...control over his change up (and missing OUT of the zone if he's gonna miss...a BIG problem of his)...that's the concerns, imo.

i like his stuff...great change, decent fastball(s).

Why not put Heilman or Marshall in the 5th spot if you cant get Peavy and use any extra money we have to try to lure the O-dog to town? Is it just too logical?

Who is the O dog?

Orlando Hudson?

I noticed among the few numbers unassigned to the Cubs players this Spring is #44. Jake Peavy wears #44 for the Padres. Coincidence? Maybe not.

No, that's definitely a coincidence.

I laughed really hard at that.

Wes sent sound man-giggle.

gay

Chad should know...

Takes one to know one.

OMG!!11 PWN3DASAURUS!!!!111ONE! ROFLCOPTER!

talk about 3/44.

No #44? Hendry's theme this offseason is to swap out Hank's and accumulate Aaron's.

Boers and Bernstein this afternnon on WSCR were discussing a recent study called "pitcher abuse index for 2008" (sorry, can't find the link at the moment), and guess who was #1 and #2? Marmol and Heilman. Egads.

They need to get Dusty Baker on the phone.
Ask him:

1. What is a Pitcher Abuse index?

2. How is it calculated

3. How do you manage with such knowledge at your disposal

4. What do you plan on changing as far as your managing style, now that we have PAI's?

I think they should go with this version of the stadium.

Clean lines. None of those messy and unnecessary seat things.

personally I think it needs a horse or dog track going around the outside of it...

world's most fun group waterslide.

awesome.

How are they gonna cram all those Marlins fans into that place?

Why? Does it only seat 75 people?

I just realized I'll get to root for Cedeno here in Seattle. Wahoo! Interleague games will be a blast.

with jose lopez at 2nd i dunno wtf seattle wants with cedeno...still, from their end they're getting 2 cheap parts with upside even if the pitching part isn't as complete as heilman.

The Mariners don't deal in intelligent planning. They just do stuff. There's good food at the ballpark, though.

Maybe they just wanted Olson and Cedeno came along for the ride. I hope I see him downtown someday.

Mariners food? Sushi? Espresso? Crabmeat? Not-dogs?

I think there's sushi. Haven't had it. Fish, Chicken, (real) Hot Dogs, Nachos. Like regular ballpark stuff plus seafood.

They have sushi. I have a buddy who is a Mariners fan and is from Seattle. He confirmed this to be true as recently as this weekend.

IIRC, doesn't Dodger's Stadium have sushi? I found it odd my last visit to the lovely, yet grey and depressing Seattle (like Chi in the winter, except rain instead of snow/cold) that they have two large-capacity stadiums right next to each other. What's up with that? How did the County approve this? A nice football stadium right next to a baseball-only park.

No idea. They were both here when I moved here. I haven't really thought about it.

I have yet to see any sushi at Dodger's Stadium. Now if you can get it in the sky boxes, that doesn't count.

This lefty fetish has gone too far.

  • BRADSBEARD: Javier Assad was still pitching into the 6th inning, and the first batter he faced reached base on an E-4 (that was Assad's 70th and final pitch of the game). Then Leathersich relieved Assad and retired the second batter 4-3 on the first pitch of the AB (the runner at 1st base advanced to 2nd on the play), and then on an 0-1 pitch the third batter in the inning (second one faced by Leathersich) lined into an inning-ending 6-4 DP (baserunner doubled off 2nd base).

  • Wow. The site actually loaded without an error! Happy 4th all, and Go Cubs!

  • OK -- my 4th of July resolution is to try to stay more positive. So -- 10 games to the AS break, meaning the Cubs will be in first place at the break! First time since...2008? Also, hopefully, Willson, KB and Javy learned something about Familia yesterday that they can use in the future.

  • Hmmm, my math might be fuzzy but if he retired 3 batters with 3 pitches, how did he get a 1/1 GO/AO ratio?

  • Pls DFA Peralta when Richard comes back. Richard 1 IP, O R, O ER, 0 BB, 2 Ks in first rehab appearance. We really need to trade for a LHRP.

  • "The Boston Red Sox were banned from signing any international players for the next year and had five of their teenage prospects declared free agents on Friday after a Major League Baseball investigation showed they circumvented signing-bonus rules last year, a source familiar with the situation told Yahoo Sports."

  • The thing with Heyward is its not just free agency. He is way under performing his career #s. He's making the same % of contact but his soft contact is much higher and hard contact much lower than all his previous years so there is something very specifically going on this year causing the issues. Chances are he will eventually get back to his previous #s and it's better to get the slump now and get that hot run later but I wish I knew what is different about this year. He's either just not seeing the ball as well or a swing change is causing it.

  • Only 3 pitches for Leathersich. Not much of a rehab outing.

    Thanks for the reporting Phil.

  • He's the nastiest pitcher I've seen in awhile. I'm gonna give them all a mulligan on this one.

Coghlan's strike out was more disappointing. He was fighting off a lot of pitches and not swinging at crap, and on the last pitch, he swung at stuff he was laying off, and struck out.

And Heyward, too. I don't blame Heyward - I blame free agency. I hate it. You almost never get a valid return on the investment.

I look forward to the day when ball players own the teams. The current economics are not sustainable.

  • Oh, I'm sure you're right. He's not 27-27 in saves for nothing. But, man, I hope they learned last night that he didn't throw a single pitch in the zone to KB, Contreras or Baez, and they all just kept swinging.

billybucks 10 hours 7 min ago view
  • Sounds like a much better game than last night's fiasco in Flushing.

  • I'm pretty sure it looks like a sweet pitch on the way in. How many sinkers like that are there at 98 mph? I agree that they should just do a Lackey and stand their with their bat on their shoulders until he throws a strike next time, but I can see how that's hard to do.

The bullpen, on the other hand, is a mess, and Heyward is starting to piss me off.

  • I noticed that too. He's getting to everything, but when he gets right under it on a high flyball he looks uncomfortable

  • Did you expect anything different?

billybucks 19 hours 29 min ago view
  • Wow, did they blow this game. Stupid plays by the kids in the 7th -- Almora throwing to 3rd instead of 2nd to keep the DP in order (when a DP probably wins the game) and Baez throwing to 3rd (to a backpedalling KB) instead of getting the easy 2nd out at first - cost them the game. Also, Contreras almost throws the ball into RF on a nonexistent pick-off play. And Maddon, for using Peralta in the first place. Did they do a bunch of shots in the dugout before the 7th? Unbelievably bad baseball. I thought Almora had a high baseball IQ?
