Gameday Open Thread / Brewers @ Cubs

The Cubs final game in Arizona this spring, as they'll hop on a plane to Vegas to finish off the spring training schedule this weekend versus the Mariners. With the Brewers and Cubs set to play next week, both managers go with minor league pitchers, Cory Bailey versus Mark DiFelice.

that we got from Detroit at the end of 2004? Wasn't he a catcher, though?

I've never seen Cory Bailey pitch before, but I won't be driving to Des Moines anytime soon. ARam really dogged it on an off-line throw, too. Mil 6 - 1 Cubs Top 2nd. Cameron just homered. All 6 runs with 2 out.

Hendry on Len and Bob. - last LHRP still in air - felt bad for tough IF and OF decisions (DeRosa crushes a triple) - worked on 5-6 trades but thinks Reed Johnson and Felix Pie are the best scenario that could've happened - "The trade that people have been talking about for 2-3 months, obviously we would've liked to add a player like that, but we're very happy with what we have." - BRob deal wasn't holding Cubs up from other deals. Coming back for another half-inning.

- Hendry said Murton will play in Iowa before he would be "given away." - Very happy with the bullpen situation, the defense, Pie and Reed Johnson. - Waiting out Lahey situation, didn't say but sounded like they want him in the Cubs system - To Len's query biggest concern, Hendry talks a little about the rotation and the competition and candidates the Cubs have had there. - Wants to see more NCAA scholarships to help develop US player pool

would be wise to get some power tips from the youngsters.

Cubs and Murton catch a break... man on third, 1 out, Murton chops it to the third. Pinch-runner Andres Blanco doesn't go of course but strays from the bag. The shortstop sneaks behind him and the 3bman tries to get Blanco at third but he gets back in. Should have just looked him back and thrown to first...

"I don't know what the resolution is -- I haven't heard anything except what somebody told me," Roberts said Thursday. "[Andy and I] talked for two minutes here yesterday. 'Highly unlikely' doesn't seem like a resolution to me." Even Roberts is annoyed by Macphail...

Fontenot or the shortstop just screwed up badly...probably Fontenot since it was a righty up to bat. man on first was stealing, but neither covered second and Mcgehee's throw went into center sending the go-ahead run to third with 1 out... and Walrond with a wild pitch or passed ball to give brewers the lead..

Ugly tie today. The top of the tenth inning was a horrible demonstration of baseball by the Cubs. Fontenot, McGeehee and Campusano looked lost on the field. Good game overall, though. On to Vegas! And btw, the new Mediaplayer powered by Silverlight is awesome. No buffer underruns and pretty cool new features.

You are correct, Rob G. With a RH batter and the runner stealing 2B, it is the second baseman's responsibility to take the throw. Only exception would be if the SS and 2B verbally agreed to something different (e.g. RH hitter consistently hits to opposite field). In other words, Fontenot had his head up his ass.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
