Game 50 Review

CUBS 2 DODGERS 1
Recap | Box Score | Play-by-play | Game Chart
W: Michael Wuertz (4-2) L: Yhency Brazoban (2-1) SV: Ryan Dempster (6)
Looks like I'm stuck doing the Game Review. My First One. I don't like doing them. So this will be the stripped-down version. Things to know about this game: 1. There was a very bad "Batter's Interference" call against the Cubs. In the seventh inning, with Corey running, Dubois struck out, and the catcher, recent call-up Mike Rose, pulled a Reggie Miller and drew the contact with Dubois on the throw down to second. Ed Rapuano called interference on Dubois, and thus Corey is out at second when he had stolen the base, cleanly. It was good to see Dusty get up and argue a call. 2. Zambrano was nearly unhittable. One hit, in fact, over eight innings. 3. With a runner on first and nobody out in the ninth, tie game, Gagne on the mound, Dusty asked Burnitz to bunt. Burnitz has one sacrifice bunt since 1999. He bunted hard to the third-baseman, forcing the runner at second base. Let me quote to you from the delightful children's story and excellent allegory, The Little Prince:
"If I ordered a general to fly from one flower to another like a butterfly, or to write a tragic drama, or to change himself into a sea bird, and if the general did not carry out the order that he had received, which one of us would be in the wrong?" the king demanded. "The general, or myself?" "You," said the little prince firmly. "Exactly. One must require from each one the duty which each one can perform," the king went on. "Accepted authority rests first of all on reason. If you ordered your people to go and throw themselves into the sea, they would rise up in revolution. I have the right to require obedience because my orders are reasonable."
Bob Brenley came dangerously close to questioning Baker's decision, using The Little Prince-style logic. We'll see if Baker is allowed on the plane back to Chicago. 4. With runners on second and third, two outs in the ninth, facing Gagne, Dubois ropes one down the left field line, just foul, before striking out to end the inning. Interesting that Baker let Dubois hit, with the Proven Veteran Left-handed Bat Off The Bench, Hollandsworth, left sitting on the bench. Personally, I would have let Dubois hit, too. 5. Ed Rapuano had a terrible, inconsistent strike zone. 6. NEIFI!!! with the go-ahead single in the tenth, run scores when the left-fielder boots the ball. 7. A shout-out to all the people in Parachat, who were going strong at a Dusty Baker's dozen, in an extra-inning game that started at 7 pm on the West Coast. I'll put on the coffee, in the morning. 8. Dempster hit Antonio Perez in the batting helmet with a Curveball to start out the bottom of the tenth with a run one lead. Perez wasn't pleased, but nothing happened, and he stayed in the game. 9. Dempster recovers to get a sacrifice bunt, pop-up, and 6-3. Game over, one-hitter. And so the Cubs, for all the drama and disasters and disabled-list trips, finish May on a five game winning-streak, and two games over the .500 mark.

p.s. Join my "Small Ball" style Yahoo fantasy rotisserie league. It's a midseason draft. We're playing a style of fantasy-ball that Ozzie Guillen would respect. It'll be silly, and fun. Come if you can tolerate me as a commish, love the Cubs, and are a pleasant person to play with. League ID 352533 password rodbeck

Wow Trans.... No mention of the 10th inning when Baker did the same thing with playing small ball that he did in teh 9th. With a runner on 1st (Barrett singled), Holly was up and Baker had him bunt and it was a good bunt down the 1st base line. Ultimately Neifi gets a hit and drives in Barett. The thing is in the 9th, if Burnitz gets a good bunt down and gets Lee to 2nd, ARam singled next and the Cubs would of scored there. Of course none of that is mentioned. SHOCKING.....

Let's not forget CPat's horrible ab against Gagne. When is Dusty going to start giving him the TAKE Sign?...I hated the Burnitz bunt. The threat of Lee running would give Burnitz a better pitch to hit... And by the way, it really wasn't a one hitter, it was a NO-Hitter! I like Doobie but he is "The Butcher". Whether you like him or not, Nefi is taking a leadership role on this team. He calmed down Wuertz and Dempster in critical situations. Maybe reminding them to let their defense do the work? The Cub pitchers overall are too in love with the K. Lets hope the kid can pitch well enough to keep the streak going...

Gonna have to disagree on the catcher's interference call, it was a good one. Dubois' momentum caused him to take a step after the swing and into the catcher. Contact, incidental or not, is interference.

Why do I suddenly think Hendry is going to trade the guys we got for Hawkins to Oakland for Barry Zito?

"Of course none of that is mentioned. SHOCKING." Personally, not a big fan of passive agressiveness....you think it was a good call by Baker...just say so. anyway, I only had the opportunity to witness Patterson's 9th inning at bat on gameday...I could tell how horrible it was from some dots on a screen...I can't imagine how it looked on TV. He was just trying to be a hero. I was thinking at the moment that Gagne should have walked him to set up a force...but I too would take my chances against 2 huge strikeout guys like Patterson and Dubois. anyway, although it's sad Z couldn't get the W...this is a huge win to keep us heading in the right direction. Hopefully I'll be at the game tomorrow...would be nice to see a sweep, heading into a deadly series against the scorching hot Padres.

I was at the game and let me tell you one thing. Neifi Perez won this game for us himself. Neife made two FANTASTIC plays in the outfield that save at least one run. Also, are you kidding that you think that DuBois had any business batting against THE BEST CLOSER IN BASEBALL!>!?!?!?!?!?!? A right handed rookie to face Gagne? C'mon! I was SCREAMING for Holly. Anyway, I almost left in before the top of the 10th. Thank God my wife said we could stay for one more. Some more notes: Gagne the Untouchable is dead. His fast ball was topping out at 93. He couldn't throw a fastball for a strike. The only thing that saved him was his change, which still looked good. Patterson still sucks for not making contact and another HUGE cut on his strike out. All he needed to do was to tap the ball in play. Some bad coaching in the 10th as Barrett stopped when coming approaching third base. There was no way in hell that the Ledee was getting to that ball. If he fielded it cleanly, barrett wouldnt have scored. And Carmen is right, Z threw a no hitter cause a real left fielder, even Moises, would have caught that ball. That guy needs to be a DH at best

Vin Scully noted that with two strikes on him in the ninth, Corey Patterson had his hands so low on the bat that his right hand was barely hanging onto the knob.

He should have choked up three inches on the bat and slapped at the ball. He still doesn't know to do that. I leardned that in 8th grade pony league.

Of course none of that is mentioned. SHOCKING..... Manny, Don't presume that Transition's omission is intentional. He was 1) open about not liking to write the game review 2) stated it would be "stripped-down", 3) writing it in the middle of the night. He also has an unabashed solicitation for his "small ball" fantasy league as the first post. I'm guessing he doesn't have a problem with that style of play. I don't read that anyone's taking away from Dusty that he played it well in the 10th (at least I don't read that here anywhere--perhaps in Parachat some were expressing that). Holly laying down a bunt is not the same thing as Burney laying one down. I know you're passionate about Dusty and I respect that, but I think drawing a conclusion about Transmission or anyone else from something they don't say can really feel inflamatory--especially when the response is extremely sarcastic. Finally, I'll say this. I really like the way Dusty played the 10th. I don't like the way he played the 9th--and I really hate that he put Blanco in the lineup. I really like Dubois' hitting. I hate, hate, hate his unseasoned fielding. I really love Corey's potential and his very real skills that show up most of the time. I really hate Corey's need to swing for the fences and his refusal to realize the kind of all-around nuanced player he could be. These may seem like contradictions to you, but for many of us they are reality and add to the emotional complexity of our fandom. It's no slight against anyone who feels unqualified, passionate love for Dusty, or Dubois, or CPat or even the Cubs as a whole from the top of the organization to the bottom (read: Ron Santo). It certainly in my mind doesn't make me or anyone else who has these conflicting emotions any less of a fan or an unmitigater hater of Dusty, Doobie, CPat, or any other Cub not named "Macias." Sometimes the most beautiful, rewarding relationships are actually quite complicated. Go Cubs!

I don't blame Dubois for the duck snort that fell. I thought it was a tough play. He might of got a bad jump on it, that I could not tell. I do blame him for the batter interfeernce. I thought it was a good call by the ump to. After going back on my Tivo, Dubois' right foot landed at the point of home plate, losing his balance along with the Cather going a little wide it bad for a bad looking play and a good call unfortuantely. The bigger problem with that AB was that Corey trried to steal 5-6 times and Dubois was fouling off balls to stop him from getting to 2nd earlier in teh AB. But that is stuff he will have to learn still as he is a rookie. And Barrett wasn't looking at his 3rd base coach on that Neifi single. He was looking at the play, so I think you can say bad baserunning, but not bad coaching. But yes Neifi is a GOD right now. Thos two catches were awesome and he comes through with the clutch GW hit. VOTE NEIFI!! Cubs are 5-0 since the team meeting....good thing this team doesn't listen nor respond to their manager. In Dusty We Trusty!!!

Manny, All those balls that Dubois fouled off while Patterson was running were with two strikes. Is he supposed to take a K so that Patterson can steal?

Nice game wrap, Trans. Any time you can quote La Petit Prince in a relevant manner is gold. Post-TiVo Observations: 1. The problem with the Burnitz bunt in the 9th was because it was Burnitz that was asked to do it, not that it was a bunt. 2. The strikezone was all over the place, but it tended to help Z. One called third strike even surprised Z, he thought he had walked the hitter! 3. Re Barrett and Neif!'s hit in the tenth. I think Ledee bluffed this one, and it might have worked. Ledee sauntered over there, acting like he was going to catch it...this froze Barrett. Ledee then tried to nonchalantly field the ball on one hop -- Ledee has a solid arm, and I think he was trying to get Barrett to freeze, then go for hom (where he would gun him down). And it might have worked, too...had Ledee not muffed the ball on the first hop by trying to look cool! 4. Weurtz was awesome in the ninth inning. Nasty stuff. We have our set-up man.

JJ- Not all those pitches were strikes. And it turns out he did K anyways and made DP by doing so too...ugh

Woohoo!!!!!! I love it when my Cubbies are doing great! We're (yes, we are ;) ) playing good. Lets keep it up over this tough month of June, gain ground on those bastage redbirds, and one up those bean town boys by winning the WS! GO CUBS!

Comment of the night from Bob Brenly- "Dodger Stadium at night plays like Coors Field" HUH? Except for all those fly outs that become 400 foot home runs!!!! Paging Joe Carter.

Great game, good managing, and an acadamy award winning performance by the Dodgers catcher... what an acting job to pull the wool over the eyes of the home plate umpire on that bushleague interference call. Burnitz bunt attempt: I liked it. Small ball is great, if you truely need only one run. Shame on Burnitz for not getting the job done (and I am of the belief that for 5 million a year, you should know all of the basics, including how to lay down a bunt), but a sucessful sacrifice would have given big Z a win to go along with the one hitter. I like Corey, I think all the Corey trade talk is a little rediculous, but when the game's on the line he's about the last person I want to see batting. I actually would have liked to have seen Holly pinch hit in that spot (or even more ideally Grieve if we could clear a space on the roster for him - yes I'm looking at you Macias - and then have Burniz move over to Center for the 9th). I'd like to hear more thoughts on the flyball that lead to the Dodger's one run. Dodgers radio announcers Stiener and Monday made it sound like he dropped a routine flyball, but looking at the replay, it looked like a tough hit into the gap that he just couldn't come up with.

Blue: "Burnitz bunt attempt: I liked it. Small ball is great, if you truely need only one run. I can't agree more...just along my lines of thinking....scary I know.

Exactly, the problem wasn't asking for a bunt in that situation, the problem was in whom Baker asked to Bunt. hence, The Little Prince quote.

I think its nice to see that Dusty has turned over a new leaf when it comes to who can bunt. I thought it was pretty rediculous last year when Dusty said that ARam couldn't bunt in a similar situation.

Blue: "I'd like to hear more thoughts on the flyball that lead to the Dodger's one run. Dodgers radio announcers Stiener and Monday made it sound like he dropped a routine flyball, but looking at the replay, it looked like a tough hit into the gap that he just couldn't come up with." I am no fan of Dubois' defense, in fact I think it is very poor, but I can't blame him for not getting to it. He might of not gotten a great jump, but both him and Neifi said they lost it in the sky. It was just a little duck snort that fell. Maybe if Dubois was a better OF he might of read it better and gotten a better jump and had a better chance at it, but I personally don't blame him for it. It just looms bigger now looking back and seeing it was the only hit. Here are the quotes from Neifi and Dubois on the duck snort: "I just lost that ball," Perez said. "If I didn't lose that ball, I could catch that ball. I got a good jump, too. I turned around and didn't see it. It's a good thing we won the game." and "We really didn't get a good read off the bat," Dubois said. "That's about all I can say. No one had a good chance to get it. It was over Neifi's head, and [Dubois and Patterson] both didn't see it and it just fell in. Things happen that you can't control, and that was one of them."

Blue: "I thought it was pretty rediculous last year when Dusty said that ARam couldn't bunt in a similar situation." Agreed...If it is bottom of the 9th, tied game, 0 out, guys on 1st and 2nd, I don't care if Ted Williams is up, that batter has to bunt the ball down the 1B line. Everyone should know how to bunt.

Not a great performance by Jerome Williams in his first start for Iowa, but not bad either (especially the "no walks" part). 6 IP 8 HITS 2 RUNS (2 ER) 0 BB 4 K 1 HR

Re the ducksnort fly ball: It would have been a tough catch for anyone, but what I saw was Corey failing to take leadership. That is the centerfielder's responsibility -- it is not up to the SS or LF, who will be coming in at the ball at what could be difficult angles (DuBois was in far left field). The CF should have the best view of the ball and should instruct someone to catch it. It did not seem that such communication was happening. Now, based on mannytrillo's quotes (thanks, Manny) what might have happened was tht Neifi called it early, which caused Corey to back off. Neifi is becoming the defensive captain of the team (though I still vividly remember those two bobbles two weeks ago against the Nats). But it is still the CF's call as to who to play it, and it certainly seemed to me that Corey was not engaged as the captain on that play. Don't get me wrong -- it would have taken an excellent play to catch the ball. But you have no chance when you don't know who is to catch it. What a terrible way to lose a no-hitter!

In CP's defence, I'd be a little afraid to get in Dub's way when he has a full head of steam behind him. By the time Dub could hear CP call him off, it would probably have been too late for Dub to stop his momentum. Also, it would have been a tough play for Corey, so he was probably hoping someone else had a better shot at it.

DC Tom- "What a terrible way to lose a no-hitter!" I know what you are saying, but it is better than losing a no hitter in AZ in the 9th inning on a HORRIBLE call by the 1st base ump. (of course I am referring to Z's no no attempt last year when a tough GB was fielded at 3B by ARAm and made a great throw to a totally stretched out Simon and got the runner by a fraction of a step, but called safe.)

but what I saw was Corey failing to take leadership. That is the centerfielder's responsibility -- it is not up to the SS or LF, who will be coming in at the ball at what could be difficult angles (DuBois was in far left field). The CF should have the best view of the ball and should instruct someone to catch it. It did not seem that such communication was happening. That's what I saw too. And I'm really getting tired of the Dubois bashing. He's a rookie. He's not a great fielder. But someone tell me Moises Alou was!!

DC, I have to agree with you, I think that was CP's responsibility to get to that ball. He may not have had a great jump, but he stopped going for the play a little too early for a ball that he clearly had the best chance to get. Neifi had a terrible angle on it and Dubois had to sprint into shallow left-center (more center than left from my viewpoint considering it was pretty much straight back from where Neifi started) from deep left. Yet, for some reason Neifi and Dubois were the closest to making that play. If Corey is going to be considered a good defensive CF in the same breath as Edmonds, Beltran, Jones, or Cameron, he should be making that play every time. And by the way, Moises and Hollandsworth don't make that play either if they start in deep left like Dubois did.

Manny- Ted Williams??? Thats my boy.

No comments here about how god-awful Henry Blanco has been defensively. Absolutely painful to watch. Was I the only one watching?

I love when MLB Extra Innings gives me the Dodgers feed for these games. Vin Scully is simply outstanding. Echo of what was said in #8. He really pointed out all the flaws in Patterson's approach. It was refreshing to hear an impartial source say the same things we've been saying all along about CPat. Before any of you start flaming me as a CPat hater, let me point you to the CPat jersey I have at home. :-)

Jacos- Mine too.... Top 3 players ever in my opinion. But I would still give him the bunt sign in the situation I presented.

To quote from Star Wars III: "Only a Sith Lord deals in absolutes."

Please let that be the last time anyone ever quotes SW Episodes 1 through 3.

About the bunting. You DO NOT ask a person who NEVER bunts to suddenly go up to the plate and do a successful bunt. This is why it was dumb to ask Burnitz to bunt. I found it odd that the Dodgers asked Choi to bunt but then I realized Choi actually has skills in the bunting department because they actually teach those skills at a young age and as they rise through the ranks in Korea. Burnitz had a much greater chance to get a base hit than he did actually laying down a good bunt. Burny is one of our better RBI men, he is not a sac bunter. This move as like asking Sammy Sosa to bunt, Sosa never bunts either. And you do not want Sosa bunting anyways.

Ted Williams? He wouldn't be the best option to score that guy from second? Bunt him to third so Dom Dimaggio can score them. C'mon. You are telling me that there was a pitcher that Williams would have to give an automatic out to, rather than swing away. He's the last guy to bat .400. That not playing to win, but playing not to lose.

It's sad that any big leaguer can't bunt. It's not unreasonable for a manager to expect any player to bunt, however it was not a wise decision in this situation. Jeromy is quite good at pulling the ball and would likely have hit it to the right side if he'd made contact. I let him swing.

I did not mean to bash Corey in post #25...I am actually of the "Don't Trade Corey" school. We have all seen him make excellent defensive plays. But last night, he simply did not assert leadership on that play, and let's hope that someone in the Cub dugout used that as a "teachable moment" for Corey. This is where a solid bench coach like Zimmer would come in handy -- someone to tell Corey what he did wrong and how to do it in the future, without Corey worrying about whether this means he will now be batting 8th. MikeC, I was wondering about the Choi bunt also, until I saw the bunt. It was absolutely perfect. Even Holly's successful bunt in the 10th was "this close" to being a disaster, as he hit it too hard, just like Burnitz in the 9th.

I don't know if anyone is still reading this thread but you have to be nuts to think that Burnitz should have bunted. He was our best RBI chance. A left slugger facing a fireballer and you want him to bunt? No way. Let Neifi or Patterson bunt in that situation but not one of the top run producers on the team. NEVER, EVER EVER EVER. Baker just wanted to avoid a double play. I am a Baker backer but he blew that game. Bad choice in bunting with a slugger and a bad choice not pinch hitting for DuBois. The fact that you guys agree with letting DuBois bat for himself (Once again A ROOKIE WHO HAS NEVER FACED GAGNE BEFORE WHO HITS RIGHT HANDED) just shows well, lets just say, I think you're all crazy.

Chad: "I am a Baker backer but he blew that game." The Cubs won the game....how did he blow it? Holly bunted in teh 10th in the exact same situation and was sucessfula dn the Cubs got the big hit from Neifi. Oh well, I just agree with Blue on this one, all MLB hitter should be able to bunt.

Manny, I will never ever believe your idea that anyone should bunt (of course in your idea of the right situation). Would you have Barry Bonds bunt? Ever? Babe Ruth? I think you were joking about Ted Williams bunting, right? Not only would he ignore your bunt sign, he would probably punch you out when he got back to the dugout. I never believe that a slugger should bunt EVER. EVER EVER EVER EVER. Leave bunting for the little guys.

For the record - Bonds has 4 career Sac Bunts, Ted Williams had 5.

The problem with bunting in that situation is that although you're playing for one run, what you're doing is actually *decreasing* the chance that you'll score one run, as well as *significantly* decreasing the chances you'll score more than one run. The only situation where it actively makes sense to bunt (ie where a successful bunt increases your chance of scoring one run) is with a runner on 2nd and nobody out. Even then, though, you have to take into account the guy at the plate and whether he has a good chance of putting one down. Playing for one run on the road isn't the best strategy -- I might have been able to excuse Dusty bunting Burnitz at home, where one run wins the game (and that's why I don't have as much of a problem with Tracy bunting in the bottom of the 9th) but in the top of thie inning it's bad strategy.

3 of Williams were in his rookie year and 1 in his second. In the next 19 years he sac bunted 1 time. 2 for Bonds in his rookie year. 2 in the next 18

Strangely, Ruth had 113 sacs in his career with a career high of 21 coming in his 16th season.

Ruth's sacrifice numbers include both sacrifice flys and sacrifice bunts, which is why his numbers are so high.

1) The Cubs make most of their runs out of homers. That trend has to be changed somehow. Thus, I think the Burnitz bunt was not out of the question. The other night I saw Bernie Williams bunt for the first time in a decade and no one criticized Joe Torre for that call! On the other hand, you would assume that Dusty knows what his players can and cannot do. Still, at that stage of the game, he made the right call, in my opinion, by trying to manufacture a run. As Bleeding Blue pointed out, even Barry Bonds and Ted Williams bunted sporadically through their careers. This is the Majors. A player gets paid to execute. Contrary to what Brenly said in the broadcast, even Shaq ocassionally has to bring the ball down to mid-court. 2) I don't think Dubois (or anyone else for that matter) had a chance on that Texas leaguer. If the shortstop or the center fielder cannot get there because of their defensive positioning, forget it! There's something called no-one's land. What surprises me is that with all the Corey bashing, no one has mentioned the awful throw Corey made to home plate on that play. I believe a good throw would have nailed the runner and the Cubs would have probably won that game in nine innings. 3) The bullpen has improved so much lately! Finding a closer and defining roles apparently stabilized the pen. I'll watch tonight's game on ESPN and pay attention to what the announcers say about it (probably Joe Morgan, though I would love if it were Steve Stone).

AZ Phil: THAT is an awesome report worth multiple thanks. I’m sure it will be worth reposting in an “I told you so” in about 2-3 years.

The actual deadline to select a post-2023 Article XX-B MLB free agent signed to 2024 minor league contract (Cooper, Edwards, and Peralta) to the MLB 40-man roster is not MLB Opening Day, it is 12 PM (Eastern) this coming Sunday (3/24).

However, the Cubs could notify the player prior to the deadline that the player is not going to get added to the 40 on Sunday, which would allow the player to opt out early. Otherwise the player can opt out anytime after the Sunday deadline (if he was not added to the 40 by that time).

Today is an off day for both the Cubs MLB players and the Cubs minor league players.

For those of you keeping track, so far nine players have been called up to Mesa from the Cubs Dominican Academy for Minor League Camp and they will be playing in the ACL in 2024:

    * bats or throws left

    Angel Cepeda, INF
    * Miguel Cruz, P
    Yidel Diaz, C
    * Albert Gutierrez, 1B
    Fraiman Marte, P
    Francis Reynoso, P (ex-1B)
    Derniche Valdez, INF
    Edward Vargas, OF
    Jeral Vizcaino, P

And once again, despite what you might read at Baseball Reference and at milb.com, Albert Gutierrez is absolutely positively a left-handed hitter (only), NOT a right-handed hitter.

Probably not too surprisingly, D. Valdez was the Cubs #1 prospect in the DSL last season, Cepeda was the DSL Cubs best all-around SS prospect not named Derniche Valdez, Gutierrez was the DSL Cubs top power hitting prospect not named Derniche Valdez, E. Vargas was the DSL Cubs top outfield prospect (and Cepeda and E. Vargas were also the DSL Cubs top two hitting prospects), Y. Diaz was the DSL Cubs top catching prospect, and M. Cruz was the DSL Cubs top pitching prospect.

    F. Marte (ex-STL) and J. Vizcaino (ex-MIL) are older pitchers (both are 22) who were signed by the Cubs after being released by other organizations and then had really good years working out of the bullpen for the Cubs in the DSL last season.

The elephant in the room is 21-year old Francis Reynoso, a big dude (6'5) who was a position player (1B) at the Cardinals Dominican Academy for a couple of years, then was released by STL in 2022, and then signed by the Cubs and converted to a RHP at the Cubs Dominican Academy (and he projects as a high-velo "high-leverage" RP in the states). He had a monster year for the DSL Cubs last season (his first year as a pitcher).

DJL: The only players who definitely have opt outs are Cooper, Edwards, and Peralta (Opening Day, 5/1, and 6/1), and that's because they are post-2023 Article XX-B MLB free agents who signed 2024 minor league contracts and (by rule) they get those opt outs automatically.

Otherwise, any player signed to a 2024 minor league contract - MIGHT or - MIGHT NOT - have an opt out in their contract, but it is an individual thing, and if there are contractual opt outs the opt out(s) might not necessarily be Opening Day. It could be 5/1, or 6/1, or 7/1 (TBD).

Because of their extensive pro experience, the players who most-likely have contractual opt outs are Alfaro, Escobar, and D. Smith, but (again), not necessarily Opening Day.

Also, just because a player has the right to opt out doesn't mean he will.

I love the idea that Madrigal heads to Iowa in case Morel can’t handle third.

The one point that intrigues me here is Cooper over Smith. I feel like the Cubs really like Smith and don’t want to lose him. Could be wrong. He def seems like an opt out if he misses the opening day roster

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Childersb3: Both Madrigal and Wisdom can be optioned without any restriction. Their consent is not required.

They both can be outrighted without restriction, too (presuming the player is not claimed off waivers), but if outrighted they can choose to elect free agency (immediately, or deferred until after the end of the MLB season).

If the player is outrighted and elects free-agency immediately he forfeits what remains of his salary.

If he accepts the assignment and defers free agency until after the conclusion of the season, he continues to get his salary, and he could be added back to the 40 anytime prior to becoming a free-agent (club option).

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Phil,
Madrigal and Wisdom can or cannot refuse being optioned to the Minors?
If they can refuse it, wouldn't they elect to leave the Cubs org?

In my opinion, the biggest "affirmative" mistake the Cubs made in the off-season (that is, doing something they should not have done), was blowing $9M in 2024 AAV on Hector Neris. What the Cubs actually need is an alternate closer to be in the pen and available to close if Alzolay pitched the day before (David Robertson would have been perfect), because with his forearm issue last September, I would be VERY wary of over-using Alzolay. I'm not even sure I would pitch him two days in a row!

And of course what the Cubs REALLY need is a second TOR SP to pair with Justin Steele. That's where the Cubs are going to need to be willing to package prospects (like the Padres did to acquire Dylan Cease, the Orioles did to acquire Corbin Burnes, and the Dodgers did to acquire Tyler Glasnow). Obviously those ships have sailed, but I would say right now the Cubs need to look very hard at trying to acquire LHSP Jesus Luzardo from the Marlins (and maybe LHP A. J. Puk as well).
