The Cub Reporter Presented by Motorola®

Check out that headline...thanks to the hard work of Cubnut, we've struck a sponsorship deal with Motorola. As far as we know, it's the first of its kind. We actually need to still cross a few T's and dot a few I's on the final deal, but we felt the off-day was the perfect time to make the announcement. We realize the whole thing is a little unorthodox and some folks will call us sellouts. That's fine, we'll accept the criticism knowing that this will be better for the site in the long run.

The deal is pretty simple, in exchange to referring to ourselves as "The Cub Reporter Presented by Motorola®" or "TCR Presented by Motorola®", Motorola backs up the Brink truck and gives us a bunch of cash to run the site. And of course, like any sponsorship deal, Motorola gets their name and logo plastered on the site.

The benefits are obvious, the site keeps going and we'll be able to make improvements and additions without having to run a canned food drive every time. Plus, it's rather obvious that the marriage of cellphones and the Internet are one of the big waves of the future. And although those details haven't been worked out quite yet, we've had already discussions with Motorola in helping create a full-functioned mobile version of the site.

The rest should be business as usual although we are in talks with a few other companies to sponsor individual sections of the site. Much like this Wrigley Field renaming chaos, we're not naive enough to think that everyone will jump on board and start referring to us by our proper name right away.. We understand it'll take some time to get use to it. So, to speed things along, we're imposing a $1 fine on anyone who calls us just "TCR" or "The Cub Reporter" without mentioning Motorola.

Okay...that last part was a joke...but we think the Rays are onto something.

So welcome to The New Cub Reporter presented by Motorola®! We're confident that in the end this will make us the biggest and best Cubs blog out there. I've got contest updates for later this afternoon as well.

NOKIA OWNS MOTOROLA. There; I said it. Seriously now, I think this is a huge step towards the enrichment of Evan Brunell-- oh wait. This is a huge step towards the enrichment of Rob G.. I expect to see flawless bandwidth use and full-featured profiles for each and every one of us. They must include post counts and avatars, as well. Okay, so now I'm really being serious. Congratulations to TCR and a big hug and thank you to Cubnut, who made the sponsorship possible. Who knows where TCR would be right now if it weren't for the dark period of the bloated association with MVN.

It's okay about the last name. And I agree with Cubby -- the site header would look pretty cool with a "powered by Motorola" banner, like Sportsline's "presented by" logo, which can be found here. Finally, an edit function would be ace :)

Congratulations again... Re: the edit function; it's pretty weird, but I can edit my next to last post, but not the most recent one -- ever. Odd stuff.

Congrats guys! When you're ready for audio, keep me in-mind. I was hoping that a Mobile version would get up and running sometime soon. With my WM6 phone, I can pull up the site, but the scrolling and waiting for all the graphics to load make it somewhat painstaking. Make it simple and light for the mobile platform, please!

Way to go, fellas. You've earned it. I too was wary of an April Fool's joke (been fooled by a Google Calendar link already today), but for billybucks' reason and because it would be a royal headache to get permission from Motorola to use their name and logo on this site, even for a day, I'm inclined to go with it. Of course, all the bigger a fool I am for reasoning it out and still being the chump.

Baltimore is like a lot of large cities. It has its bad sections, of course. There's a lot to like, starting with the Inner Harbor (though a very high quotient of Baltimorons), Camden Yards, Fells Point and the Johns Hopkins area. I lived in D.C. for six years and made many trips up there, including 17 games at Camden Yards in 1993 when I had a relative living there who had season tickets.

Oh come on.  We know that you could care less whether me or anyone else is up to date on what goes on at the site.  From day one this has been Rob's Baby.  TCR presented by Motorola amounts to "LOOK AT ME!  I BUCKED MVN, AND NOW I'M THE ROOSTER IN THE HEN HOUSE!"

 

Just a terrible idea, designed for the self-aggrandizement of the few.  You really expect the readers to swallow all those lies about how this benefits them?

This is probably a discussion best had offline, but since I have had a direct hand in trying to put this together, I feel like I should respond to Trans and anyone else who questions what we're doing:

The idea is to monetize all of the hours that all of us, Trans included, put into writing and upkeeping the site. If it gets to the point where these arrangements are affecting IN ANY WAY the content of the site, I'll be the first to object and walk away.

That said, there are other ways we're going to able to capitalize (profit) from the work we do here and I hope everyone--Trans and all of the loyal readers included--will be patient enough to let us work out the kinks before screaming that we have ruined the site Ruz started seven years ago.

According to ESPN 1000 Moises Alou admitted in an interview recently, can't find, that "he could not have caught the foul ball in Game 6 even if Bartman was not there." It's all about healing, folks.

Jacos: IF you are referring to what I read, an ESPN writer was in an elevator and overheard Alou replying when someone was talking about Bartman - in as long as it took to reach the floor he wanted. Unless it is something else, I wouldn't call this an "interview". Was there a link?

If this is real, it's pretty good drama. If it's not, it's still pretty good. The Bartman/Alou thing was mentioned by the d-bag Mariotti. I think Alou is nuts; seems pretty clear to me that he was going to make that catch. Not that I want to think about it anymore.

I guess I'm in the minority that at the time, I had no issue with Alou's reaction. I think people like Mariotti have always made far too big of a deal over it. I see no reason why Alou should've just stood there and gone, "Oh well."

It's a good thing that there are still businesses today that are still on the industry despite the recession that our country is facing. Some people wonder if bankruptcy is a viable solution. Bankruptcy is something you should avoid at all costs, if it is at all possible, be it chapter 7 or 11. If you can get debt consolidation and or mortgage loan modification in lieu of filing for protection, you should do it. Bankruptcy stays on your record for 7 to 10 years, and in so many situations you have to disclose it, and failing to disclose can be a crime. Anything would be better, even getting installment loans is far better than filing for bankruptcy.

    i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

    there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.

    I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.

    I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…


    Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

    They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

    I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.

    Is it just me or does it seem that official scorers are becoming less likely to call a misplay an error? 

     

    Guess I've hit my cranky old-man phase in life.  "I remember back in the day when an error was an error.  Official scorers have gone soft.  Now where did I put my readers?!!??"

     

    Sidenote, maybe Bellinger should be a little more careful against the Astros.  That was the series last year that a play at wall put him on the IL.

    i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

    i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!
