Contest Winners

Enough with the April Fool's Day hijinx, time to hand out some prizes from some of our past contests.

MLB '08: The Show PS3 Giveaway

It was a simple 6 question contest with a tiebreaker and three folks got all six correct, with another six getting five correct answers. Unfortunately I only have five games to give as prizes, so it came down to the tiebreaker for those who got five correct. Before I reveal the winners, the correct answers:

1. Where will Sam Fuld start the season?

Correct Answer: Iowa Cubs (sounds like it might be the DL, but it'll be Iowa's DL)

2. Where in the batting order will Alfonso Soriano bat to start the game
during the Cubs exhibition game on Friday, March 28th versus the
Seattle Mariners?

Correct Answer: He batted second

3. Between Mike Fontentot, Eric Patterson, Ronny Cedeno and Alex Cintron, how many will make the Cubs Opening Day Roster?

Correct Answer: Two, Mike Fontenot & Ronny Cedeno

4. Where will reliever Tim Lahey be by Opening Day?

Correct Answer: Very few got this one, but he was claimed by another organization off waivers.

5. What uniform will Brian Roberts be wearing on Opening Day?

Correct Answer: Baltimore Orioles

6. The Cubs will acquire how many players via trade between now and Opening Day that will be on their Opening Day Roster?

Correct Answer: 0, Reed Johnson was signed as a free agent

Tiebreaker: How many runs will the Cubs score on offense in preseason games between 03/22/2008 and 03/29/2008?

Correct Answer: 52

And the winners (drumroll please):

Andy, Indiana JJ and Wrigley Field Ruz got all six correct. Archie, JohnT, D.L., DPappy, J_Cb19 and David S. got five correct.

As I said, I only have five to give away and Ruz is ineligible for a prize (well he's eligible but he can buy his own now from the money he's getting from the Wrigley company). So we had to get into the tiebreakers:

Archie
- 35
JohnT
- 35
D.L.
- 31
DPappy
- 20
J_Cb19
- 15
David S. - 28

So Archie, JohnT and D.L. get the last three copies...congrats!!! Email me your address information and I'll drop those in the mail tomorrow.

Free Agent Frenzy 2007

We never did announce our winner for the Free Agent Frenzy 2007 contest, so let's do that as well. It ended up a 3-way tie between Brick, Chris H. and Dave (Big_Lowitzki) with 71 points each. Barry Bonds went unsigned, but if he does sign with the Angels mid-season, I'll give Arizona Phil his seven points but it won't be enough to help him. So we had to break out the tiebreaker rules.

In the event of a tie for the Grand Prize, tiebreakers will be used
among the remaining tied participants in the following order:

1. Total number of actual correct player-team selections;

2. The highest actual Confidence Level selection that was correct,
going backwards until a tie is broken. For example, if two people tie
with 75 points, but one person selected his or her "15" pick correctly
and the other person's top correct choice was his or her "14" pick, the
person with the "15" correct pick would be the winner; and

3. MLBAM will administer a timed baseball trivia quiz, testing
the tied participants' knowledge of Major League Baseball, until the
tie is broken.

The participant whose submission is closest to the correct answer will be deemed the winner of the applicable tiebreaker.

Luckily, we don't have to get into the timed trivia quiz. All three got six correct answers which takes us to the second tiebreaker. They all got their #15, #14 and #13 picks correct, but Chris H. tripped up on #12 knocking him out. So it goes to the #11 pick and Dave nailed Fukudome to the Cubs at that number while Brick missed out on #11 with A-rod to the Angels.

Congrats, Dave, send me your address info and you get a copy of the Chicago Cubs Legends DVD Set.

There also seems to be a mix-up in the 2007 Prediction contest we ran, so I'm recalculating those numbers. The winner also gets a Chicago Cubs Legend DVD set.

Friggin Lowitzki.

This message is brought to you by Bob Patterson -- the pretty mediocre reliever from the 90's.

I friggin rock.

AND... still not quite sure why I picked Jones to the Dodgers, nor am I sure why I gave it so many confidence points. But it worked! :)

*shakes fist at the heavens*

A-Rod to the Angels!!! Whyyyyy!!!!!

Sorry if this is old news, but here is Ken Rosenthal's review of openning day.

Video analyzing K-Fuk's homerun cut from yesterday's game. Looks like he doesn't have a single hole in that swing.

I don't care who you are. That's some high quality humor right there.

I read about getting Rick Rolled.

The little man with a big voice.

He looks like Ron Howard at the end of the Andy Griffith series.

Not a compliment.

Nice Carlos. You totally got me.

In all serious though it was a great swing and it is up on You Tube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tscjQboAITs

I mean, I knew that that wasn't gonna be K-Fuk, but seriously...what the fuck was that?

You got Shaggrolled. Ten times more potent than a Rickroll.

That was strangely mesmerizing.

Carlos: Is that a Matt Murton video?

why the heck did I not make that connection before? that would explain Lou and Jim's hesitance to make him a starter.

Here's the Alou quote on Bartmant=
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3324343

from the same article, Alou's comments after the game:

After the game, he said: "I timed it perfectly, I jumped perfectly. I'm almost 100 percent that I had a clean shot to catch the ball. All of a sudden, there's a hand on my glove."

I think Alou is just being nice about it now and trying to give Bartman a break.

I agree.

Hmm... could you be falling for another April Fool's Joke?

You Ass, Carlos. I fell for that oe hook, line and sinker...

It's not like he directed you to 2 girls 1 cup.

However, after further thought, maybe it's worse.

He got me too.

anyone know what the "watch live baseball games" ad on the left sidebar is? Sounds like Tivo for your computer I guess, just can't tell how it works. Do you have to pay an extra subscription on top of your mlb.tv one?

(and yeah, might as well make a few pennies by having you guys click on it instead of posting the link)...

Some background info on the meme I posted above... click here; no, it's not another joke.

Yeah Bitches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carlos-Yeah I knew about the Rickroll (but you did get me in the last thread). My WTF was directed at the Shaggs video that Mister Whipple posted. I couldn't stop watching that.

heading to the Daytona rotation...

That's a puzzling decision.

Maybe AZ Phil can clean it up for me, but I was under the impression that Ceda was going to stay in the bullpen.

Fleita said on XM radio a few weeks back that they were considering it. They think he'll get more opportunity to work on his secondary pitches. They intend to monitor his pitch counts closely and possibly pair him with another pitcher so they have dual starters that day.

Actually take a look at K-Fuk's swing on that HR in slow-mo -- this guy has an incredibly quick bat, smooth through the zone at the last second.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PssiZnGgjRI

As mentioned earlier....

no good can come from this.

Oh Dear Gawwwwdd

Carlos, did you film this?

Your signature made me laugh. So I hope it's happy spirited!

"Winner of TCR's Spring Training 08 Prediction Game Give Away for MLB 08 the Show for PS3 which is ten times more awesomer than The Joe's puny 2007 TCR Keeper Fantasy League win."

Your signature made me laugh. So I hope it's happy spirited!

Yeah that was pretty much my only goal.

great...the new "3/44" is "take a look at this slo-mo video of K-Fuk's home run swing"

sweeeeeeeeet.

Good God, I'm glad April Fool's Day is over. I was tricked at least three times, all online, twice at TCR (or TCR-PBM).

In compensation, I get a PS3 game. And now it's April 2, my 30th birthday! Woo!

happy 30th...someone will be by in the next 12 hours that will teach you the secret handshake and give you the new rulebook.

the stuff about "lawn care" and "those damn neighbor kids" is long/boring, but if you don't pass the test they send you off a labor camp.

wait, what I'm doing now isn't labor camp?? shit.

thanks for the birthday wishes, crunch.

Happy Birthday.

Seriously though, 30 is the new 19. Go get drunk. Now.

Welcome to the roaring 30s. Here's your handbook filled with things that aren't the way they used to be. I highlighted the passages pertaining to baseball.

Thanks, fellas.

  • Manny Rondon faced 13 batters ... and got 10 to K. Not a bad day's work.

  • With several other Cubs hitters bailing out on curves today I think overall it wasn't being seen well. It for sure looked silly but a good breaking pitch coming at you and then breaking down isn't the easiest thing to see and has made many hitters look silly. Also Soler should have more walks this year but for quite a few called strikes that were actual balls and even the called strike he bailed on was borderline.

  • it's not like we're talking about a guy who's never had issues with pitch selection and seeing the ball over here. we're talking about a guy who has some rather legendary swing-and-misses at breaking stuff who's been exploited low. going forward it's worth paying attention to seeing if he can be exploited inside, too. he seriously bailed out of the box on a called strike. sure it was a good curve, but he obviously didn't see that well at all.

  • It would seem like he is figuring it out now and it's really coming together. Really happy for him. Joe was really protecting him from the 3rd time through the order, but as you allude to, he is earning trust to go deeper.

Wondering if has potential to become a #3 pitcher? His current stats certainly support it.

  • That doesn't count b/c CRUNCH didn't see it on his 60" HDTV 5 times in replay.

I have seen many players "bail out" when the ball looked like it was gonna hit them.

Especially with the advent of the splitter and pitchers that can really get the ball to dance. Marmol, Sutter, Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling, Derek Lowe, Smoltz, Arrietta...

These guys have made the best bail out only for the ball to come over the plate and be called a strike.

No shame in that. The same way players whiff hard enough to cause them to drill a hole in the ground from spinning.

  • a 60" TV with slow-motion replay and multiple looks on that replay helps...a lot...

it's one thing to shy away like he did the 2nd time, it's another to bail out of the box on a called strike. that happened in the 1st one he pulled away from. he misjudged that one by a foot or so...

  • Good Hendricks sure is fun to watch. He was hitting all his corners today and the Phillies couldn't do anything with his changeup.

johann 11 hours 51 min ago view
  • Bryant and I believe Zobrist both did that too.

johann 12 hours 8 min ago view
  • Soler BB acumen and plate awareness is excellent. Not unusual for even the best players to react as if they were about to hit them, "even though they weren't that close" from your vantage point sitting on your deck, or wherever.

The E-Man 12 hours 10 min ago view
  • soler vs inside breaking balls is scary.

he's had 2 inside curve balls today where he reacted as if they were about to hit him even though they weren't that close...one he bailed out of the box on, it was a called strike.

crunch 12 hours 28 min ago view
  • j.urias optioned back to AAA...guess we wont be seeing him in the LAD series.

crunch 12 hours 35 min ago view
  • so is him actually getting 2 hits in a game (2 doubles!)...first time he's even been on base 2 times in a game since 9 games ago on his 3/4, 1bb day.

im ready for him to at least look like a 2-slot hitter since he's gonna be slotted there no matter what he does.

crunch 13 hours 31 min ago view
  • That Heyward move to avoid Bryant's ball hit at him was a thing of beauty too.

johann 13 hours 49 min ago view
  • 9 pitches in and this game already rules.

HR, double...bryant's turn (who came out to a Kris Kross song for some horrible, horrible reason).

    ...2 run inning...zoobrest hitting streak at 14.

crunch 13 hours 53 min ago view
  • First time I saw Herrera was yesterday. He took like 100 pitches, fouled off a ton off Lester.

Very nice young player and perfect leadoff guy.

  • Obviously not Phil. But he mentioned this on Wednesday.

"Dominican Summer League (DSL) Opening Day is Saturday June 4th, so probably about 8-10 pitchers and position players presently at EXST in Mesa will be sent to the Cubs Dominican Academy (probably sometime this week) and be assigned to either DSL Cubs #1 or DSL Cubs #2."
