Contest Winners

Enough with the April Fool's Day hijinx, time to hand out some prizes from some of our past contests.

MLB '08: The Show PS3 Giveaway

It was a simple 6 question contest with a tiebreaker and three folks got all six correct, with another six getting five correct answers. Unfortunately I only have five games to give as prizes, so it came down to the tiebreaker for those who got five correct. Before I reveal the winners, the correct answers:

1. Where will Sam Fuld start the season?

Correct Answer: Iowa Cubs (sounds like it might be the DL, but it'll be Iowa's DL)

2. Where in the batting order will Alfonso Soriano bat to start the game during the Cubs exhibition game on Friday, March 28th versus the Seattle Mariners?

Correct Answer: He batted second

3. Between Mike Fontentot, Eric Patterson, Ronny Cedeno and Alex Cintron, how many will make the Cubs Opening Day Roster?

Correct Answer: Two, Mike Fontenot & Ronny Cedeno

4. Where will reliever Tim Lahey be by Opening Day?

Correct Answer: Very few got this one, but he was claimed by another organization off waivers.

5. What uniform will Brian Roberts be wearing on Opening Day?

Correct Answer: Baltimore Orioles

6. The Cubs will acquire how many players via trade between now and Opening Day that will be on their Opening Day Roster?

Correct Answer: 0, Reed Johnson was signed as a free agent

Tiebreaker: How many runs will the Cubs score on offense in preseason games between 03/22/2008 and 03/29/2008?

Correct Answer: 52

And the winners (drumroll please):

Andy, Indiana JJ and Wrigley Field Ruz got all six correct. Archie, JohnT, D.L., DPappy, J_Cb19 and David S. got five correct.

As I said, I only have five to give away and Ruz is ineligible for a prize (well he's eligible but he can buy his own now from the money he's getting from the Wrigley company). So we had to get into the tiebreakers:

Archie - 35
JohnT - 35
D.L. - 31
DPappy - 20
J_Cb19 - 15
David S. - 28

So Archie, JohnT and D.L. get the last three copies...congrats!!! Email me your address information and I'll drop those in the mail tomorrow.

Free Agent Frenzy 2007

We never did announce our winner for the Free Agent Frenzy 2007 contest, so let's do that as well. It ended up a 3-way tie between Brick, Chris H. and Dave (Big_Lowitzki) with 71 points each. Barry Bonds went unsigned, but if he does sign with the Angels mid-season, I'll give Arizona Phil his seven points but it won't be enough to help him. So we had to break out the tiebreaker rules.

In the event of a tie for the Grand Prize, tiebreakers will be used among the remaining tied participants in the following order:
1. Total number of actual correct player-team selections;
2. The highest actual Confidence Level selection that was correct, going backwards until a tie is broken. For example, if two people tie with 75 points, but one person selected his or her "15" pick correctly and the other person's top correct choice was his or her "14" pick, the person with the "15" correct pick would be the winner; and

  3. MLBAM will administer a timed baseball trivia quiz, testing the tied participants' knowledge of Major League Baseball, until the tie is broken.

The participant whose submission is closest to the correct answer will be deemed the winner of the applicable tiebreaker.

Luckily, we don't have to get into the timed trivia quiz. All three got six correct answers which takes us to the second tiebreaker. They all got their #15, #14 and #13 picks correct, but Chris H. tripped up on #12 knocking him out. So it goes to the #11 pick and Dave nailed Fukudome to the Cubs at that number while Brick missed out on #11 with A-rod to the Angels.

Congrats, Dave, send me your address info and you get a copy of the Chicago Cubs Legends DVD Set.

There also seems to be a mix-up in the 2007 Prediction contest we ran, so I'm recalculating those numbers. The winner also gets a Chicago Cubs Legend DVD set.

Friggin Lowitzki. This message is brought to you by Bob Patterson -- the pretty mediocre reliever from the 90's.

from the same article, Alou's comments after the game: After the game, he said: "I timed it perfectly, I jumped perfectly. I'm almost 100 percent that I had a clean shot to catch the ball. All of a sudden, there's a hand on my glove."
I think Alou is just being nice about it now and trying to give Bartman a break.

You Ass, Carlos. I fell for that oe hook, line and sinker...

anyone know what the "watch live baseball games" ad on the left sidebar is? Sounds like Tivo for your computer I guess, just can't tell how it works. Do you have to pay an extra subscription on top of your mlb.tv one? (and yeah, might as well make a few pennies by having you guys click on it instead of posting the link)...

Some background info on the meme I posted above... click here; no, it's not another joke.

Carlos-Yeah I knew about the Rickroll (but you did get me in the last thread). My WTF was directed at the Shaggs video that Mister Whipple posted. I couldn't stop watching that.

That's a puzzling decision. Maybe AZ Phil can clean it up for me, but I was under the impression that Ceda was going to stay in the bullpen.

Fleita said on XM radio a few weeks back that they were considering it. They think he'll get more opportunity to work on his secondary pitches. They intend to monitor his pitch counts closely and possibly pair him with another pitcher so they have dual starters that day.

Your signature made me laugh. So I hope it's happy spirited! "Winner of TCR's Spring Training 08 Prediction Game Give Away for MLB 08 the Show for PS3 which is ten times more awesomer than The Joe's puny 2007 TCR Keeper Fantasy League win."

great...the new "3/44" is "take a look at this slo-mo video of K-Fuk's home run swing" sweeeeeeeeet.

Good God, I'm glad April Fool's Day is over. I was tricked at least three times, all online, twice at TCR (or TCR-PBM). In compensation, I get a PS3 game. And now it's April 2, my 30th birthday! Woo!

happy 30th...someone will be by in the next 12 hours that will teach you the secret handshake and give you the new rulebook. the stuff about "lawn care" and "those damn neighbor kids" is long/boring, but if you don't pass the test they send you off a labor camp.

Welcome to the roaring 30s. Here's your handbook filled with things that aren't the way they used to be. I highlighted the passages pertaining to baseball.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

Teheran minor league deal is done, per MLB.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."

Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Totally agree. The 26 man roster very rarely consists of the 13 best position players and 13 best pitchers.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
-give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

-Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?

  • Childersb3 (view)

Pro teams have to play their "big money" guys if they are healthy and not "locker room" issues.
The Cubs wanted to deal JHey off well before they bought him out. They just didn't want to pay him to play for someone else for that long. Jed did give him 20+mil to play for LAD last yr.
Jed might also let Kyle walk at some point this year. Similar scenario to JHey, except Jed thought Kyle was going to be good/solid in '24!!
You'd think Smyly is in the same book as well. Same with Neris (he's a 1yr vet RP, so he's not really in this convo too much).
That's ~35mil between those three and those three are going to get opportunities until at least late June) over younger guys even if their performance is "iffy".
But, Jed is going to play Taillon a lot. They have to try and justify that contract and hope a veteran works out.
So, Taillon, Imanaga, and Hendricks are locks for the rest of April and probably May.
Assad, Brown and Wicks handle the last spots until Steele is ready.
Now, you're question has real merit when Steele comes back. That will interesting if Brown is still good and Hendricks is still bad. But Taillon is entirely safe as long as he's healthy.

And the bullpen moves were "money" based as well. Smyly has actually been okay. But he hasn't been clearly better than Little. Little had one bad outing. But Smyly makes 9mil. If they needed another RHRP and one of Little and Smyly had to go, it was going to Little. But that doesn't mean Smyly is one of the best 13 arms for the team.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Childersb3: I think there was an issue with Luke Little coming into a game with men on base. He seems to need a "clean" inning to be dominant. So he is a future closer and needs to be used in that role at AAA. Same goes for Michael Arias. He needs to come into a "clean" inning, and is a future closer and needs to be used in that role at AA. Porter Hodge is a more versatile pitcher, a better version of Keegan Thompson (multi-inning RP). But Little, Arias, and Hodge (probably in that order) are the Cubs top three RP prospects (all three are Cubs Top 15 prospects).

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

So, let’s do a little war gaming. Taillon is back for tonight’s game. He pitched two rehab games, just a few innings each, and not especially sharp. Let’s face it, he hasn’t been lights out since the Cubs gave him the big contract. In other words, as flat out bad as Hendricks has been, the chances of Taillon being the savior don’t look exactly promising.

If Taillon is equally ineffective or perhaps even worse, what’s the next move? Winning teams can often find a way to work around a dud fifth starter - kinda. Two dud starters make things much more difficult.

I believe the biggest reason for the recent bullpen moves was dissatisfaction with the recent blowing of big leads and the recognition that the bullpen wasn’t all it was thought to be. In other words, they are exploring alternate options and configurations. If similar juggling becomes necessary (even more so than it already is), what kind of reasonable maneuvering do we think could be explored?

  • Childersb3 (view)

Cubdom needs to prepare themselves for Wicks to be sent to Iowa for Taillon to come up.
Ben Brown has 4 appearances. Wicks has 4 appearances.
Ben has 16.1 IP.  Wicks has 17 IP
Ben was a 1.1 WHIP.  Wicks has a 1.7 WHIP. Wicks does have significantly more SOs.
    Ben has been better, though.
I love Wicks. I think he's a fighter and his stuff has improved.
But, Jed isn't ditching Hendricks just yet. He should. But he won't.
Hendricks should go to the IL and Taillon-Imanaga-Assad-Wicks-Brown should be the rotation.
    Wont' happen though.
