Day Off

It's a day off for the Cubs, so it's basically a day off for the Cub Reporter writers. There are still things to talk about though, like: * Who will get sent down when Jerry Hairston is activated tomorrow? Is it the end of Matt Murton's stay in the bigs? It doesn't seem likely that the Cubs will go to 11 pitchers on their way into Coors Field. * There's a little article on Adam Greenberg on MinorLeagueBaseball.com. He still hasn't recovered from his beaning, which happened over a month ago. At this point, I imagine the Cubs will wait until after 9/1 to bring him back. They are going to bring him back to the bigs, right? [UPDATE 8/19:] One of the pics on Cubs.com this morning, to go along with this article, is a picture of Greenberg being helped off the field. He looks like a guy who just got hit in the head, but I bet he's not too happy with that picture geting a wide release. Poor kid. * Who else will get called up for September? There's been quite a bit of discussion about it in the comments, and plenty of people think Jermaine van Buren should get a look, but the fact that he's not on the 40-man is going to make it more difficult. Not that there aren't people on the 40 who could be cut to make room for him (I'm looking at you, John Koronka), but the Cubs might be reluctant to DFA someone, even a meatball like Koronka, just to get JvB a brief taste of the bigs. * Much of the TCR staff is on vacation or business trips or otherwise unavailable over the next few weeks, so we're putting out a call for guest writers. If you have something you'd like to write about, drop me a line and let's talk about it.

given the OF is burn/lawton/hairston/cpat and all 4 are legitamite starters (depending on how you feel about cpat, 3) and the fact murton can really only play LF cuz of his arm/range...its looking like murton. he'll probally be back up in sept, though. i wrote non-stop about murton a few threads ago, so im not gonna revisit that here, but needless to say he's got some issues that need a little tweaking. cedeno will probally come up in sept, but its not a given seeing as he's been having some D issues lately being groomed to not try to catch everything hit in the air within a 200 ft. radius of him. he doesnt take charge like a SS should, yet he wants to be near every popup hit on the left/left-center side. he's a bit too damn eager for his own good it seems. van burren's gotta be added to the 40-man eventually...if not in sept, then shortly after the offseason when players are dropped. i'm looking forward to seeing how fontenot adjusts to his possible future role of 2nd/3rd replacement...esp. his work at 3rd. theyve been playing him at 3rd a bit more recently and moved the human sandbag mcclain to 1st. a lotta that has to do with hairston playing 2nd, but its nice to see fontenot getting time at 3rd.

whoops..

There's also a very positive article on the return of Adam G on cubs.com. Granted it's a Muskrat article, but it appears that he's finally been cleared by a legit physician; moreover, he's discovered a rather odd "cure" for his bouts with vertigo. Interesting stuff.

it's actually the same article, just so you know.

With us being 6 back of Houston in the loss column we need to close the gap to about 3 games with 2 weeks left when we play them 7 times. Go 5-2 and make the playoffs. So with that in mind as long as we keep winning we need Houston to win series against WASH, NY, Ph, if they play them. Not a sweep but win the series. If we keep winning series we will catch up with the pack by defult. We also want all of the NL east teams to split. I guess it's still to early for a thread on remaining schedules of the 6 WC contenders and scenarios huh?

I tried to volunteer to write a guest article but some server rejected my e-mail.

take out the DASH and replace it with a - it's to avoid spam.... and if you already did that, my bad

Well, we got the split in the WASH/PHIL DH, just like we needed. Also NYM lost, but FL did win. HOU is winning 2-1 right now in the 6th. So if MIL can come back, we will almost have a perfect off day.

WOO!! MIL just took the lead in the top of the 7th 4-2 over Clemens and HOU.

Be careful what you wish for in Milwaukee.... With a win...that puts SIX teams instead of 5 between the Cubs and the wildcard lead. The idea is to start shrinking teams between the Cubs and the lead...not grow it... Plus I think Milwaukee has a much underrated team...they might be in a better position to make a run than the Cubs.

clemens ERA went from 1.32 to 1.53 tonight also, i was out drinking last night during the game.... my dad just told me that dusty subbed in Hollandsworth for Burnitz in right field in a double switch in the 9th? wow just when my rage at dusty was back down to "loud roar" levels, he pulls a dumbass move like that to get it up to "outrage" level. um, holly or burnitz on D in right? come on. i hope this isn't true. dusty really thinks he has to look smart all the time. you might say "jeez GL, no big deal, who cares", but the fact that he does this sort of idiotic move on a semi-daily basis shows that he no understand good baseball.

clemens' ERA went from 1.32 to 1.53 tonight. what a scrub. also, i didn't see the game last night bc i was gone drinkin', but my dad just told me that dusty subbed Holly in for Burnitz in RF in the 9th in a double switch? um, sweet. this is clearly an example of dusty doing a double switch for no reason. i think everyone on this board would much rather have Burnitz over Holly in terms of D. i know you might not think it's a big deal, but these sort of criminally stupid pitching changes, pinch hitter decisions and double switches happen 5 or 6 times a week under dusty. he no understand good baseball. in davey johnson or joe girardi we trusty.

ok sorry for the quasi-double post. i really waited and checked to see if the first one went through. i lose.

you can apply most any dusty complaint to any manager at almost any point in the year. some of you would really jump off buildings seeing what larussa does in stl. sd, atl, tex, etc etc etc...especially tex and atl...

and please save the "at least cox plays kids" thing...cuz he plays what he's given that's not injured and some of those kids have no business being big leaguers right now anyway. and just as the "dusty dont play kids" thing is blown outta proportion, the "cox plays kids" thing is too if you look at what he's played vs. what's on the club healthy throughout his entire tenure. cox and dusty are quite similar...ive said it before and it still seems to hold water. theyre all gonna make seemingly "boneheaded" moves but you gotta hold some of them in context of the given moment. there's been a LOT of dusty complaints about stupid moves that were explained away pretty easily via various things from exhaustion to injury to etc...

"some of those kids have no business being big leaguers right now anyway" to clear that up...atl has a bad habbit of putting 20 year olds around the bigs before they got a chance of breaking the club and appropriately cox doesnt throw them to the wolves to kill his club. one thing atl does have that chc doesnt is the ability to continously draft/sign kids that are actually worth playing eventually. under baker/baylor's tenure, outside of pitching, there's been patterson/choi/hill even remotely worth playing. we all know what's up with that.

Cubfan: "With a win...that puts SIX teams instead of 5 between the Cubs and the wildcard lead. The idea is to start shrinking teams between the Cubs and the lead...not grow it..." Not in my opinion. It should be to start shrinking the deficit. Rooting for MIL to be HOU makes total sense.

Ok, HOU and NYM lost, WASH/PHIL split the DH and MIL and FL won. Almost a perfect off day for the Cubs, with only FL winning to hurt the Cubs. So the Cubs did not even play today, but yet gained 1 whole game game in the loss column almost entirely on the field. PHIL - 57 losses HOU - 57 losses FL - 57 losses WASH - 57 losses NYM - 59 losses CHC - 62 losses MIL - 62 losses So 5 losses back with 41 games to play. They have 3 games vs FL, 3 games @ MIL and 7 games in total vs. HOU (4 away and 3 home). Another small, but good step today for the Cubs even though they didn't even play. Now the Cbs need to take care of their own business by taking AT LEAST 2 of 3 @ COL. Go Cubs!!!!

nice night... Astros and Clemens lose (blown lead in the 7th) Nats(Expos) and the Phillies split a DH NY Muts lose only flaw in the evening is Beckett and the Fish won... the Wildcard is stacked with 4 teams now within a game apart...and we're now 5 back. the novel is called: Our Team on Life Support...don't pull the plug yet.

Cubfan, I don't care about the WC race there is no way were in it, but if you care about it I would have to agree with Manny. MIL is not a team to be concerned with. The best thing for them would be to split with HOU, and beating roid boy (oops I meant Clemens) makes that a certanity because they should be able to split vs. Wendy and Ansecio.

"Our Team on Life Support" haha...

I prefer the title to be: "Dusty Hendry's A Series of Unfortunate Events"

Bud Selig Thursday on the rumors that Rogers Clemens tested positive for steroids, They're absolutely not true. I don't know where this stuff comes from. I know this kind of stuff is out there. This isn't journalism's finest hour. Some people ought to be ashamed.

Since Carlos Zambrano was inserted into the Cubs starting rotation on July 1st, 2002, only one full-time has had an ERA lower than Big Z.

8-for-53 (.151)...last homer july 23 damn burnitz...just damn...

Milwaukee is not a threat? Well then you should assume Chicago is not a threat either. Milwaukee has some bats that I wouldn't want to be facing down the stretch. Still think Philadelphia is the team to beat...but if we don't start putting some teams behind us (Mets, Brewers) then Florida and Philly and Wash can all beat each other up...but the bad news is each day then one or more of those teams stays even (or gains ground) with the Cubs and time is not our friend right now. The September 20 21 and 22 games will be very interesting--could determine 3rd or 4th place in the division for the Cubs.

Cubfan, For once and maybe only once I have to agree with Manny. Reason being: If the Cubs DO NOT GET HOT, they won't make the playoffs anyway so assuming they will get hot we want the least games seperating us from the WC leader keeping in mind who we have left to play. That's why I feel we need to close in on Houston and Milwakee, but be more concerned about the teams we don't play again in the NL east. I would rather Houston win series againstr the NL east with us playing Houston 7 more games. We are = in the loss column with the brew crew so even if we play the exact same record as the brew crew the rest of the season and win the 3 game series we would still beat the Brewers by 1 game. It's still a long shot but GO CUBS.

NCFAN, I agree with you about the NL east. We only have games against Florida (and Atlanta which means nothing for the wild card)...so the East really is out of our hands. I also believe Houston shows some signs of hurting (in a very close wild card race with Philly and Wash...and they lose 2 of 3 against the Cubs and they lose the first game of a series against Milwaukee). I thought Washington would really cave but they are showing signs of holding it together. The Mets probably won't stay up there...As I said, I like Phillies chances best of all. If I went just by record of competition remaining--I'd pick Houston, but they are showing signs of losing games against losing teams (Cubs, Brewers)... Unfortunately time is the enemy as well..

Bill T, That has to be the most disheartening statement I've heard Baker make yet... ''The only thing about teaching at the big-league level is you can't teach them until they make a mistake,'' he said. ''You don't tell a guy about the cutoff man until he misses it. You assume they know that stuff when they get here. You sure as hell DO teach before they make a mistake. It's a damn good thing little Darrin hasn't burnt his hand on a stove because this attitude is exactly how Dusty teaches. Dusty is demonstrating he is VERY old school...about 40 years in the past. He is a reactionary manager....Managers today need to be proactive. You can't manufacture runs being reactionary and the Cubs show they can't manufacture runs etc.... ''That's the only thing about teaching at the big-league level is that they make mistakes here. At the minor-league level, if they make mistakes, it's going to be in the Des Moines Gazette. It's not in USA Today or on ESPN, showing you getting picked off.'' True Dusty...and that's why we've never seen any embarassing moments from Alou, Sosa, Burnitz etc...because we all know veterans are much more immune to mistakes than guys who have the fundamentals still ringing in their ear from college coaches, A, AA, AAA coaches.... What a fool...MORON!!

Stevens- I noticed that too, but Nomar makes $8.25 million base salary this year. Hendry gave hin teh extra $250,000 in spring training. And Aram is making only $8 million as he signed a new long term deal replacing the 1 yr/$8.95 million deal. And Weutrz makes $322,000 and Welly makes $329,000.

The best-case (32-9) and reasonably good (27-14) marks for the Cubs remain the same. While last night's results were about as good as things could have been for the Cubs, there's no question that somebody's still going to beat 86-76: Phillies 21-19 Astros 22-19 Nationals 22-19 Marlins 23-19 Mets 25-17 Brewers 26-14 If the Cubs sweep, their best-case and reasonably-good scenarios increase one win each to 92-70 and 87-75. I don't think 2 out of 3 is going to work here. The Cubs need to pick up all of these games.

Ron Galt: "there's no question that somebody's still going to beat 86-76" That may well turn out to be true, but right now Philly, who is the WC leader, is only on pace for 86 wins.

> "Source: All-baseball.com" Hey, wow, cool! If only they'd, you know, put a link.

clemens has used/is using anabolics, but I doubt baseball would ever bust him. the palmeiro fallout was bad enough image-wise.

Yeah, and that's the deceiving part. They're on pace for: Philadelphia 86.3 Astros, Nationals 85.7 Florida 85 Mets 82.3 If it was only a matter of one team playing at or below pace, then it'd be an okay outlook. When any of the top four teams can put a fairly charitable Cubs' outlook in trouble just by playing 2 or 3 games above their pace, that's bad.

"some of you would really jump off buildings seeing what larussa does in stl." Crunch, I lived in St. Louis for four years and attended numerous Cards games. Although La Russa did at times pull a "Huh?" move (like leaving Marquis in for another inning against the Cubs/Brewers), he usually has some semi-legit reason for doing it (trying to instill some confidence in his pitcher, knowing his team can come back and knowing they have a 10+ game lead in the standings). However, La Russa's occasional miscues were NOWHERE near as often and NOWHERE near as egregious as Dusty's. Dusty, we don't have a 10+ game lead in the standings; in fact, we're fighting for a pipe-dream wild card spot. I agree wholeheartedly with Green Lantern and humbly posit that the replacement of Burnitz was Holly was sublimely moronic, ill-timed and utterly devoid of merit or justification. I reacted with violent outrage to that fact on Parachat, saying that if he wants to change the pitcher, fine, but there is NO REASON to change the outfielder ESPECIALLY if the outfielder you are replacing is sub-par in defense. Just indefensible.

Cubs should DFA Macias, do not send Murton down. Hairston basically replaces Macias.

"clemens has used/is using anabolics, but I doubt baseball would ever bust him. the palmeiro fallout was bad enough image-wise." Completely disagree. Do you know how much pressure is on MLB right now to clean up their act? They are the most scrutinized of any professional sport right now -- and I'm not talking about the scrutiny of fans, I'm talking about the scrutiny of Congress. If Bud Selig has an intelligent bone in his body, he would never try to cover up something, especially something as huge as this. In fact, you can make the argument that revealing a story of Clemens getting busted would actually HELP baseball in the long run. The players would understand NO ONE is immune from punishment, and the bigger the names getting busted, the more the fans and media will think the game's act is getting cleaned up. Just as with Palmeiro, if Clemens is busted, it would indeed carry major fallout image-wise. But not fallout for MLB's image -- fallout for Roger Clemens.

Phil Rogers... Given the price the Cubs have paid for a lack of continuity in the past, it would probably be wise for team President Andy MacPhail to force the issue: Offer Baker a two-year extension at the end of this season and see if he wants to stick around and try to finish what he started ... an EXTENSION? He came in here talking about the World Series, three years later the Cubs are going to average 85-86 wins and are worse off than a year ago, and we're talking extension? And what's "lack of continuity" referring to? The only continuity there was prior to the Hendry years was a parade of bad players and over-priced free agent saviors (which, predictably, Rogers goes on to recommend... after all, sprinkling money and names on the bullpen has fixed the problems perfectly in the past.) I don't understand the assumption of the $100 million payroll. If the free-agent class ends up being overpriced, then instead of spending money on the bad (Wilson) or superfluous (Burnett), can't the Cubs just take, say, $20 million and roll it into future years' payroll?

Didn't Rogers want Dusty fired a few weeks ago or am I getting him confused with some other hack?

Believe it or not, I wouldn't DFA Macias. He has been, it pains me to say it, somewhat useful of late. If there is further injury to our infield, he might even prove more so. I'd consider DFA'ing Hollandsworth. There's no way in hell (or at least shouldn't be) any way he's back with the team next year, and the Cubs might be able to get something for him in a trade. With Lawton, Burnitz, Patterson, Hairston, and Murton capable of playing one or more outfield positions, he has lost his utility.

holly or macias, either way. no reason for either of them to be here over murton. those dusty quotes are downright frightening. can't teach until mistakes are made?? the darren baker hot stove quote is right on, that's what i though about too. nothing is ever dusty's fault.

"clemens has used/is using anabolics, ..." The Commissioner says he doesn't. Are you saying he's lying?

gee, bud selig? lie? are you new to baseball or somethin? I assume you were sarcastic. anyway, it would be DEVASTATING for MLB -- for one of the "best pitchers ever" to be exposed as a "fraud", deservedly or not. clemens was a pretty good pitcher before he got, erm, huge in his mid-late thirties, but since that time he's become an exceptional pitcher. I'm just amazed that these guys are dumb or arrogant enough to actually get caught...it's not like this is olympic-grade testing here, and even then the masking agents will always keep the wealthy athlete a step ahead of the doctors.

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

Here are the Cubs pitchers reports from Tuesday afternoon's Cardinals - Cubs game art Sloan Park in Mesa:

    SHOTA IMANAGA
    FB: 90-92
    CUT: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
    SPLIT: 81-84
    CV: 73-74
COMMENT: Worked three innings plus two batters in the fourth... allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits (six singles and two doubles) walked one, and struck out six (four swinging), with a 1/2 GO/AO... he threw 73 pitches (52 strikes - 10 swing & miss - 19 foul balls)... surrendered one run in the top of the 1st on a one-out double off Cody Bellinger's glove in deep straight-away CF followed one out later by two consecutive two-out bloop singles, allowed two runs (one earned) in the 2nd after retiring the first two hitters (first batter had a nine-pitch AB with four consecutive two-strike foul balls before being retired 3 -U) on a two-out infield single (weak throw on the run by Nico Hoerner), a hard-contact line drive RBI double down the RF line, and an E-1 (missed catch) by Imanaga on what should been an inning-ending 3-1 GO, gave up another run in the 3rd on a two-out walk on a 3-2 pitch and an RBI double to LF, and two consecutive singles leading off the top of the 4th before being relieved (runners were ultimately left stranded)... threw 18 pitches in the 1st inning (14 strikes - two swing & miss, one on FB and the other on a SL - four foul balls), 24 pitches in the 2nd inning (17 strikes - three swing & miss, one on FB, two SPLIT - six foul balls), 19 pitches in the 3rd inning (13 strikes - seven swing & miss, three on SL, two on SPLIT, one on FB - three foul balls), and 12 pitches without retiring a batter in the top of the 4th (8 strikes - no swing & miss - four foul balls)... Imanaga throws a lot of pitches per inning, but it's not because he doesn't throw strikes...  if anything, he throws too many strikes (he threw 70% strikes on Tuesday)... while he gets a ton of swing & miss (and strikeouts), he also induces a lot of foul balls because he doesn't try to make hitters chase his pitches by throwing them out of the strike zone... rather, he uses his very diverse pitch mix to get swing & miss (and lots of foul balls as well)... he also is a fly ball pitcher who will give up more than his share of HR during the course of the season...

    JOE NAHAS
    FB: 90-92
    SL: 83-85
    CV: 80-81
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day... relieved Imanaga with runners at first and second and no outs in the top of the 4th, and after an E-2 catcher's interference committed by Miguel Amaya loaded he bases, Nahas struck out the side (one swinging & two looking)... threw 16 pitches (11 strikes - two swinging)...

    YENCY ALMONTE
    FB: 89-92
    CH: 86
    SL: 79
COMMENT: Threw an eight-pitch 5th (five strikes - no swing & miss), with a 5-3 GO for the first out and an inning-ending 4-6-3 DP after a one-out single... command was a bit off but he worked through it...

    FRANKIE SCALZO JR
    FB: 94-95
    CH: 88
    SL: 83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 6th inning... got the first outs easily (a P-5 and a 4-3 GO) on just three pitches, before allowing three consecutive two-out hard-contact hits (a double and two singles), with the third hit on pitch # 9 resulting in a runner being thrown out at the plate by RF Christian Franklin for the third out of the inning...

    MICHAEL ARIAS
    FB: 94-96
    CH: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and allowed a hard-contact double on the third pitch of the 7th inning (a 96 MPH FB), and the runner came around to score on a 4-3 GO and a WP... gave up two other loud contact outs (an L-7 and an F-9)... threw 18 pitches (only 10 strikes - only one swing & miss)... stuff is electric but still very raw and he continues to have difficulty commanding it, and while he has the repertoire of a SP, he throws too many pitches-per-inning to be a SP and not enough strikes to be a closer... he is most definitely still a work-in-progress...

    ZAC LEIGH:
    FB: 93-94
    CH: 89
    SL: 81-83
    CV: 78
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and tossed a 1-2-3 8th (4-3 GO, K-swinging on a sweeper, K-looking on another sweeper)... threw 14 pitches (11 strikes - one swing & miss - eight foul balls)... kept pumping pitches into the strike zone but had difficulty putting hitters away (ergo a ton of foul balls)... FB velo is nowhere near the 96-98 MPH it was a couple of years ago when he was a Top 30 prospect, but his secondaries are better...

    JOSE ROMERO:
    FB: 93-95
    SL: 82-84
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 9th (14 pitches - only six strikes- no swing & miss) and allowed a solo HR after two near-HR fly outs to the warning track, before getting a 3-1 GO to end the inning... it was like batting practice when he wasn't throwing pitches out of the strike zone...
