Jerome Williams gets a chance to pitch at his old haunt, while attempting to gain enough Dusty points to keep him in mind for next year's rotation. For the Giants, it's one of their top propsects, 20-year-old Matt Cain on the mound. The Giants 1st round pick in 2002, his ascent through the system has been swift and for the most part justifiable. After putting up a respectable season in AA ball at age 19 last year (6-4, 3.35 ERA,40 BB, 72 K, 7 HR, 86.0 IP), he followed it with an average year at AAA Fresno (10-5, 4.39 ERA, 73 BB, 176 K, 22 HR, 145.2 IP). Considering he won't reach his 21st birthday until October 1st, that's not too shabby, not to mention the PCL is certainly a hitter's league. His numbers look like the perfect candidate to be a Cub, don't they? Lots of K's, lots of walks and lots of home runs allowed. Baseball America had him rated as the Giants top prospect before the season and possessing the top curveball in the whole system. He ranked as the 13th best prospect in all of baseball as well. As for the Cubbies, the march to .500 continues, player development be damned. I'll be at the game tomorrow and with the Giants throwing out righty Brad Hennessey, it's unlikely I'll get to see both Murton and Cedeno play and potentially neither. Wouldn't mind seeing them in person. I do get to see Prior pitch which is always fun and could be made more fun if he plunked Barry Bonds right in the armguard (if he happens to play). Go Cubs and Congratulations to the Jaxx, who swept their first round series tonight with an 11-2 thrashing of the Carolina Mudcats!!!

Comments

A small sample of 31 games indicates that Baker would be making a huge mistake in benching Murton. Here's the Cubs record with Murton playing: [1] 17-14 .548 in games he's played (89-73 projected) [2] 11-8 .579 in games he's started (94-68 projected) Now the breakdown on the improving Cedeno: [1] 13-26 in games he's played (54-108 projected) [2] 8-11 in games started (68-94 projected) However, the Cubs are 5-5 .500 in games where Murton & Cedeno start - they're hardly hurting the team while learning to play at the Major League level and no worse than the seasoned veterans considering their 69-71 .493 record. The cool thing is that the team is now 4-2 .667 with Murton & Cedeno in the line-up since Murton was recalled when Ramirez became disabled, and they're 5-1 .833 in games Murton has played since returning and they're 5-3 .625 in games played by Cedeno since he returned on August 26th. SOURCE: Yahoo Sports game log statistics for Murton & Cedeno.

My head hurts.

Cubs playoff odds have risen back above 1%. Who's got pennant fever?

How Dusty like, Cedeno goes 3 for 5 yesterday and the next day he sits.

This is a lineup only Todd Walker can like... Hairy in LF leads off Neifi hitting 2nd CPat batting 8th at least Walker isn't riding the bench which is more than our rookie heros can say dusty wants them to sit next to Macias so that they can learn from a bench expert

andruw jones hit his 46th homer tonight, a 3 run blast. Bummer.. Clemens has given up 3 runs already in 2 innings AND it's a road game...Craziness

5 runs and 5 walks off Clemens in 3 innings in Milwaukee...wonder if his back is acting up again

Hopefully we dont hear about Clemens roid rumors now. While I think its more likely than not he was a user than not until you have HARD evidence that someone was a user you shouldnt say he is a roid user. Back to the Cubs I hope Cpat sprains an ankle tonight or some other SMALL injury that takes away his season. I could live with Perez over Cedeno because Neifi is a team leader out there, but to play Pat who cant hit over a guy who has all the makings of a future batting title champ is unexusable.

Dusty's head is made of concrete fuckin' asshole

Giants took a 2-1 lead in the 6th, good news is that it Hawkins stands a good chance to come in now.

Since the Cubs have no chance...you gotta be impressed with a rookie coming in and throwing a 1 hitter through 8 innings.

Another rookie shuts the Cubs down. 3 pitches for the final 3 outs. No wonder no one was in ParaChat.

In any other universe, not playing Murton and Cedeno at this point in the season would be a firable offense, so why does Dusty do it and why does Hendry put up with it? I'm so close to just comletely giving up on the Cubs for good it's scary. If they sign Macias for another year that will seal it. I still don't understand why Grudz couldn't have remained part of the team. He's cheaper than Neifi and better, too.

Some notes from the papers this morning: * Sully think Cubs might ask Nomar to play LF next year. This leaves Murton without a position. Of course Murton playing RF cant be worse than Sosa from 02-04. With a shorter CF at Wrigley he could probably play there. Any ways all 4 papers are saying that Kiley's report is wrong. * According to the AZ republic the D-backs might trade Chad Tracy. We should get him. He hitting .300 or above. He could play all 4 corner positions giving a reliable back-up for Ram and Lee.

Nomar in left field? Oh, please say it is not true! It just makes me realize how good we had it when we had Dave Kingman out there in left. Yeah, he was a poor fielder but at least he could hit home runs and he drove in a lot of runs. And he was pretty healthy for the most part. Nomar? Would he really be a lot better defender than Dave? We would be very lucky to get 20 home runs out of Nomar and I do not see him driving in more than 80 runs in a year, if he can stay healthy that is, which I call a longshot. So please let's not sign Nomar. Can't we please get a real left fielder again?

FYI CHIFAN - Tracy is butcher in the OF. He may be able to learn, but right now he's bad. If the Cubs could get him for basically nothing, fine. Otherwise they should pass.

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

    cards put j.young on waivers.

they really tried to make it happen this spring, but he put up a crazy bad slash of .081/.244/.108 in 45PA.
