Cubs Name Scouting Director

The Cubs have named Tim Wilken their new Director of Amateur & Pro Scouting, replacing John Stockstill, who left the Cubs organization to take a similar position with the Orioles. The 52-year old Wilken is an Old School scout who left Toronto after J. P. Ricciardi brought Moneyball to the Blue Jays in 2001. Wilken was named one of the Top Ten GM prospects in baseball by Baseball America in 2003. Wilken is known for drafting high school players (although he claims to have no real preference for high schoolers over college kids, that is his tendency) and believes in building a draft the same way you build a team, with "strength up the middle" (pitchers, catchers, shortstops, and centerfielders).

If he can help bring 11 straight 1st-round picks to the majors, I'll be thrilled.

wilken makes a lot of sense for hendry/mcphail...theyre both tools drafters that like to get youth they can mold in the system.

while the pitching usually finds stregnth in the cubs system, aside from high-A/AA the bats havent found much instruction bleeding through to the tools they have.

hendry/wilken will probally get along well.

I know it's mentioned in the other post, but wow. As good as the Nationals trade was, what kind of crack was the Ranger's Jon Daniels smoking today? He gives up a good young pitcher who is under control for five more years who put up the same stats as the closer to free agency pitcher they are getting. Actually they were a bit better...pitching in the AL at Coors Light vs. the NL in Petco. And all he had to do was throw in a quality 4th OF and a solid 1B prospect to get it done. Does this mean we can trade Macias for Mench straight up now?

sledge/a.gonzalez were useless to tex. a.gonzalez is a pretty high-end prospect and young is, too.

why they had to throw in young to get eaton with that package is just...stupid. tex robbed themselves on that one.

WHO SMOKES THE MF'n P?

sounds like you do, moe.

Jacque Jones is a cub according to Levine. He says that Hendry is not finished with the OF. He also says Hendry is still interested in Tejada but Angelos has not decided what do with him yet.

according to Rosenthal it is a 3 year deal.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5185442

Man Daniels and Hendry must have had a crack party today.

Levine is reporting that Jones's deal is 3/$16m. Hendry better get a decent righty bat to go along with him like a Mench, Kearns type.

Well, we can add Jones to the list of players this year that Hendry has overpaid, gave too many years too or gave too many incentives too. Rusch, Neifi, Eyre, Howry, Jones....

We couldn't overpay a few million for a top leadoff man/SS in Furcal, but we could for all these lesser guys?

3 years $16M for Jones....HA HA

And we lost a draft pick because he was offered arbitration. Nothing like getting raked over the coals when you are vulnerable. Congrats to Jones Agent. He desereves his fee for this one.

We just gave $5.33M per year for Jones and John Hill thinks it is fair to offer Lee $7M per year.

This sucks. I'm through.

Have good seasons, it's been fun.

4 of the top 10 are already GMs, plus Jon daniels from the 'next wave' category. Pretty food list.

Manny--"John Hill thinks it is fair to offer Lee $7M per year"

And Manny still hasn't learnt to read things, process them in his head and respond with a coherent and factually correct statement. Either that or you're just so stupid that you think that 43 million divided by 4 comes to 7 million.

John Hill:
"In 2006, a guaranteed $13m, a $3.5m improvement or so on what heís owed for 2006 under the terms of his current deal. From 2007-09, a guaranteed $7m per year"

Like I said you want Lee to make $7M per year guarenteed, but yet Jones got $5.33.

Hey, don't take it out on me becuase everyone on TCR shot down your totally unrealistic idea.

Yeh, Manny, and believe it or not, when you get $13m, and you add it to three times $7m, and then you add another $3m, you get $37m. You divide that by 4 and you don't get $7m.

I also later conceded that the money tied to plate appearances might as well be guaranteed. So you're now talking about another $2m for 3 years. Or $6m, because maths isn't your strong point. You add $6m to $37m and you get $43m. And you divide that by 4 and you still don't frigging get $7m.

I'll take it out on you as long as you prove incapable of getting your head around the above.

  • Oh yeah! It just felt like one for some reason.

  • Agreed. I was not including Fowler or Heyward.

I'm just not a fan of 2016 Coghlan.....

  • @Dusty Contreras if it's a Lester or Arrieta start. TLS is good PH too. You also forgot about Heyward, assume Fowler is CF.

  • I expect Soler to get optioned as well when activated and Cahill to replace Grimm. It wouldn't surprise me if Coghlan and/or Soler is included in a trade.

Maybe Coghlan is up to see if he can get on track before someone acquires him.

This move could also be to assure that we have as much OF depth as possible to maximize Joe's ability to rest players in September once we've clinched.

  • Maddon basically said as much...Fowler still kind of sore, they're being proactive, etc.

  • La Stella at 2B...Baez at 3B, or vice versa. Zobrist in RF, Bryant in LF No one gets bumped.

  • If Coghlan is leading off, I assume Fowler is getting the day off. Who is supposed to lead off, then? Someone has to get on base for Bryant and Rizzo. Coghlan's OBP is .346 with the Cubs. Jackson's was .304. LaStella can lead off, but then he has to play second or third, and bump Zobrist or Baez.

Unless he gets hot, Coghlan will likely change places with Soler soon.

  • I suspect the Cubs asked Chris Coghlan if he would accept an Optional Assignment to the minors and he refused (Coghlan has one minor league option left), so either you keep LaStella on the 25 and release Coghlan, or option LaStella to AAA for about a month and have both LaStella and Coghlan available in September-October. (As an Article XIX-A player, Coghlan must give his permission before he can be optioned to the minors, while LaStella has not accrued enough MLB Service Time to refuse an optional assignment).

  • Given today's lineup -- maybe they just wanted an extra OF to give Dexter a few days off (i.e. day game after a night game).

  • Tommy LaStella has three minor leaue options left so it's no big deal to send him to Iowa, but as of right now he projects to be at 2+124 MLB Service Time by the end of the of the 2016 MLB regular season, which will place him "on the bubble" as far as being eligible for salary arbitration as a "Super Two" post-2016.

But if he spends at least twenty days on optional assignment this season (anything less than twenty days and he will accrue a full season of MLB Service Time), he will not have enough MLB Service Time to have a chance to be a "Super Two."

  • this will be his 4th time leading off for the cubs this season...WITH A .500 OB%! HAIL MADDON! THE PLAN (c)2016! HE HAS RISEN! #YOLO #SWAG! KONY 2012!

  • I don't hate Coghlan as a PHer but he's leading off today which is as bad as Austin Jackson doing so last year. He doesn't even have the speed.

johann 2 hours 50 min ago view
  • TLS has options. He will be up again in Sept, and maybe earlier.

Rob Richardson 3 hours 1 min ago view
  • Very odd -- TLS .308/.419 in July (in 26 AB). Strange move for a team struggling to score runs. Hard to imagine Coghlan doing better than that. Maybe they like Coghlan better as a PH?

billybucks 3 hours 11 min ago view
  • Sorry to nitpick -- but the first game wasn't a save.

billybucks 3 hours 26 min ago view
  • Wow La Stella sent to Iowa and Coghlan brought up. I'm not a huge Stella fan but he has been hitting lately and is to me better than Coghlan. Neither are good defensively but I guess Coghlan can play the outfield allowing Bryant to stay at 3rd more where he's better.
