As reported by the Trib's Paul Sullivan, the Soriano-less Cubs will have Mike Fontenot leading off, Mark DeRosa will be manning left field, and Eric Patterson will be in the wings. (This will be the first time in Fontenot's Major League career he has been penciled into the leadoff spot.)

As for E-Pat, he was hitting just .222 at Triple-A, with 1 HR, 3 RBI and 12 K/3 BB in 36 at-bats for the I-Cubs. He stole one base.

Tonight's head-scratchers and eye-openers:

Eric's brother, Corey, he of the lifetime OBP which has fallen below .300 (.297), continues to bat leadoff.

Josh Fogg is still taking a regular turn for a Major League Baseball team.

And two-and-a-half weeks into the season, Carlos Zambrano has walked just two men and has a 9:1 K/BB ratio.

About tonight's pitchers:

In 20 lifetime starts against the Cubs, Fogg is 7-7, 5.69.

In 23 lifetime starts against the Reds, Z is 10-9, 3.39. One of the most inauspicious was this doozy from last April, in which the Cubs and Zambrano built a 5-0 lead through 4 innings, before Zambrano opened the door to a 6-run fifth inning for the Reds, who went on to win 6-5.

As noted yesterday, this game gave rise to one of Lou Piniella's few full-out eruptions last season. ("What the hell do you think isn't working?") It was fun to hear and see, but I don't think we need to go through it again tonight.

Alright... I think I get it. The Cubs didn't think Pie's 10 k's were enough, and they needed a way to replace Soriano's 11k's, so they brought up EPat and his 12 minor league k's. It finally makes sense.

Gordon Wittenmeyer of the Sun Times has an article today that has Hendry and Piniella supposedly feeling not so happy that Pie can't hit and their hands are tied not being able to move Fukudome up in the lineup. Which makes little sense to me, Dero and Soto can drive in runs better than Fuku, and Fuku is an on base machine with his singles and walks, so move him up! Then there is this ridiculous line... "And outfielder Daryle Ward, while perhaps the best pure hitter on the roster, has defensive limitations that are likely to keep him on the bench as a pinch-hitter short of occasional starts at first base or DH in interleague play." Ward is the best pure hitter on the roster? Better than Fuku or DLee or Aram? What is Wittenmeyer smoking? Ward is a nice hitter, and if he wasn't such a weak defensive player he would probably be playing everyday for someone, but he wouldn't be putting up similar or better numbers than Lee or ARam. Here's the link to the entire article... http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/896813,CST-SPT-cubnt16.art…

Who knew Ward was the best 'pure' hitter? Maybe in 'pure' he meant fat? :)...anyway I am surprised to see Patterson up instead of Murton, really the way that Soriano was playing I don't think it will be a huge loss. I'd like to see Reed Johnson everyday in left.

so pie isnt even playing tonite. this move makes room for more fontenot/cedeno ab's over murton. okay, whatever. at least there's not 100000 posts about how lou "made" this callup happen like the last 60 year old fat man... no matter who wanted what...epat is here and cedeno/fontenot are getting soriano's ab's it seems.

if he gets a chance to play. He is the best internal option this team has as a "tradtional" leadoff hitter. Lou and Hendry arent going to go Terry Francona on us and have Dero or Murton hit leadoff, there going to want as close to world-class speed at the top as they can and Epat has the best eye of the fast guys.

But Epat is being brought up to be a backup. I don't care, no combination beats Matt Murton in LF. No Patterson/Font/DeRosa at 2nd and DeRosa/Pie/Ward/Johnson OF. You put Murton in LF you make the lineup Theriot or Fuku leadoff then Murton the #2 hitter and play the next 2 weeks. But instead we are treated to the musical chair lineup. Not happy with Lou or Hendry in this decision. Murton since he didnt make the roster was labeled in the organization as the #1 guy to go to if an OF injury happened. Well it happened and Murton is still not on the team. If i was Murton i would contact my agent and tell the Cubs to trade me.

i agree with this. Murton should be contacting his agent. This organization pisses me off. I could care less how much they crushed the reds tonight. I'm not super in love with murton but a 5 year old could have made the obvious choice here. Hendry must have rolled the fucking dice on this one. Its just retarded beyond retarded. Man i'm pissed. And I'm not Murton. If I was him I would be really steamed. I'd walk into management and give them the finger. Maybe KPat asked if he could visit his brother. Ya thats gotta be it.

Yeah, me. Really, Reed Johnson as everyday left fielder for the Cubs when they have Matt Murton in AAA? I'm not even that happy that Pie has been benched in favor of Johnson. He's a good 4th outfielder who can fill in for a center fielder for a limited time or sub in at the corners, but if you've got Murt, you have to start the red-head over Johnson. Still, at least Ward isn't playing left field. He'd be a good option for DH if the Cubs went to the AL, but I cringe every time they try to play him in the outfield.

Has anyone else noticed that we now have a catcher that can hit?

Shhh. Don't tell anyone.

Transactions: CHICAGO CUBS--Place A. Soriano, OF, on the 15 day disabled list. Recall E. Patterson, IF, from Iowa (AAA). In case everyone missed the memo, this should be proof positive that Lou doesn't like and/or want Matt Murton on his team. He had the perfect opportunity to play Murton in LF for the next 15 days (the only position he can reasonably play by the way), and Lou passed on it. I'm sure half the TCR posters are in mourning for Murton (moment of silence.........OK), but you can put a fork in his Cubs career. Lou would rather have DeRosa in LF, Fontenot at 2B, and E. Pat (and his LH bat) off the bench. Again, it should tell you all you need to know about how much Lou values Murton.

For those doing the MLB Fantasy baseball, is it me, or is something not working pretty much every night? I'm not showing stats for anyone tonight and no links for gameday or MLB.TV either. I had to go to Cubs.com to find the game.

Patterson in LF. Anyone else think this move is all about boosting E-Pat's trade value? They've already tested the waters with Murton and have figured out he's not worth a whole hell of a lot. Might as well build up E-Pat for a deadline deal.

Late to the party today but... I called the Epat call-up in Parachat last night...woo me and the move isn't that surprising, the Cubs chose Fontenot over Murton in spring training, it doesn't take a huge leap that they'd choose Fontenot to get the regular playing time now that there's an injury. And Epat gets to be his backup of course. Lou also said something about wanting more speed for the next few weeks for whatever reason. Don't get me started on this Pie crap though, he sits for a week although mostly versus lefties. Then he gets back in versus Aaron Harang but sits against a crappy pitcher like Josh Fogg...horseshit.

This beauty from Mariotti today: "The hits served to punish Cincinnati starter Josh Fogg for plunking Aramis Ramirez in the back, which struck me as an interesting way for a certain manager, in the other dugout now and booed again, to bait the volatile Carlos Zambrano into a purpose-pitch war." I believe the count was 2-0 and there were runners on base, plus the Cubs had scored in the inning...and Mariotti thinks Dusty had Fogg hit A-Ram on purpose.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

welcome back happ!  double off the wall 1st PA back.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
