The powers-that-be here are all going to be away from their computers all day, so this will have to do as a preview. Greg Maddux goes for victory number five in the month of April. To say the least, he's been pretty good so far this year. His biggest problem of the last few seasons has been giving up an absurd amount of home runs, a problem which so far has been rectified, only one long ball to date and that was to Jim Edmonds in a game that was already in hand. And I wouldn't be too surprised if Maddux served that one up to set up Edmonds later down the road, a devilish trick he's been known to play on opposing lineups. The Brewers are the "sleeper" pick of choice this year for a playoff run whether by division or wild card. After finally finishing a season at the .500 mark, Doug Melvin and the Brewers braintrust have assembled a fine team on a modest budget with uber-prospects Rickie Weeks, J.J. Hardy and Prince Fielder already making contributions. Even the man on the mound, David Bush, was quite the coup in the Lyle Overbay trade(in my honest opinion) and if those peripherals stay in that range, he'll be a thorn in the Cubs side for years to come. I still think they're a year away from truly contending from the playoffs, but a run of good luck for them and bad luck for the rest of the NL Central and I definitly see them fighting for playoff glory in September. More than anything, they seem to be our nemesis along with the Reds the last two seasons, so expect some hard fought battles. GO CUBS!!! Brewers have a good team this year. Rusch & Z will have to keep them off the bases or they'll pay.

Here's to hoping Maddux keeps it going. Sweep the Brew Crew!!! GO CUBS!!!

I hear miggy cabrera's name in trade rumours anyone hear anything?

Write this down... The Brewers will NOT finish above .500. They not that good. Last year was a fluke.

The top 5 teams in the NL central are a combined 31 games over .500. (69-38) Not bad for the division many said would be the weakest (or close, NL west) in baseball. What this means unfortunately, is that at this early juncture intra-division games carry added weight. We need to pick these games up early, we need to make a statement against the Brewers, and we need to win at home...all things that we didn't do last year. Should be a fun series.

i don't know how you think that, the team is solid and with ben sheets back - more dangerous. NL central is beating up on the entire NL

Chad...do you care to support your assertion with any kind of facts? Why do you think the Breweres will not finish over .500? I do not think that they are a great team, but I do think that they are a good team.

Whatcha hear Dan?

I can't figure out what the Fish plan on doing with Miggy. My guess would be that they'd trade him, but he's still so young that they might want to keep him to anchor the team in the next few years. If there's one guy worth selling the farm for, I think it's him. And since the Cubs have been frequent trading partners with the Marlins, it's not impossible. Of course, there's a certain outfielder, Jacques J (wait that's too obvious, J Jones), who needs to find a way out of town.

I think that the Cubs, St. Louis and Houston will all finish over .500. It's hard for four teams to finish over .500 cause they all play each other so much. That's the basis.

I have trouble seeing how the Brewers can regularly compete with the Astros and Cardinals, and I can see them having difficulty with the Cubs (jinx, oops)...so I can't see the Brewers doing much more than hovering around .500. But we are talking about the future...so I certainly don't have facts to back up my statements.

You guys are all dicks! Are you threatened by the Brewers? You're all a bunch of dicks!

HA! BJS, you are only feeding my ego.

ummm....oooops. Wrong article. Heh... That could have been pretty embarrassing.

Hey Chad, look for the Crew to make the playoffs at least three times before the Cubs squeak a Wild Card appearance.

Jones(6), Perez(7), Blanco(8), Maddux. You can't start Neifi the same day you start Blanco and be sane. No fooling, Maddux should be batting sixth. It'd be more productive and maybe we wouldn't have to endure another "Double Dusty"(switch) when The Dog comes out.

"HA! BJS, you are only feeding my ego." I think it's full

I wonder if there will be complaints about the defensive downgrade if Neifi is taken out for Hairston in a double switch.

I don't have a big problem starting Neifi with Maddux on the mound and Blanco is playing because Barrett is hurt.

Also, Jones playing against RHP is why he is on the team. (BTW nice double!)

Neifi and Baker in all their glory. Runner at 2B, no outs and he pops to the SS. How about laying down a bunt and giving Blanco a SF shot. In Dusty we trusty indeed.

Murton is RED HOT (Ron Santo really likes him in the #5 slot too)...Ramirez and Jones are looking good too...Neifi ruinied our streak of 3 doubles in a row...overall, it's a good inning so far though.

So in order to save money the Marlins trade Cabrera and his $350,000 salary for Jock's 6 million? I realize that the Marlins ownership would be protested in a fantasy league, but they aren't just going to give the Cubs Miggy Cabrera because the Cub want him. Him and Pujols will be the studs in baseball for the next decade, and Cabrera is not expensive yet. I don't know why people here seem convinced he's going to be traded.

A-a-a-a-rgh!! Pitcher in trouble. He's sweatin'. He's completely effed. Contemplating what it will be like to go from the big leagues to working at Home Depot. Three doubles in a row, nobody out. We're set up for a big inning if the bottom of the order will just be patient. Neifi pops out in the infield on the first pitch. Blanco flies out on the first pitch. Two pitches...... Just wanted to point that out.

Two pitches...... That is sickening. I'd rather see guys stand up there and take 3 called strikes than give the other team an out with one pitch.

payton rules: So in order to save money the Marlins trade Cabrera and his $350,000 salary for Jock's 6 million? Well said. Another way to put it is: CABRERA WILL NOT BE TRADED. NO WAY, NO HOW. IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. Usually teams trade players because it benefits them somehow. Trading Cabrera would in NO WAY benefit the Marlins. I think you're right payton rules, too much fantasy baseball rots the brain.

Bush has pitched 3.0 innings at this point, and even though the Cubs have 6 hits and no GIDP's, he's only had to throw 39 pitches.

Even though Greg Maddux has lowered his ERA to 0.86 after 4.0 today it is still 18 points higher than Hank "two pitches two outs" White's batting average.

was murton's CS a busted hit & run or was he going on his own? I can't believe they'd call for a steal there.

"Two pitches...... That is sickening. I'd rather see guys stand up there and take 3 called strikes than give the other team an out with one pitch." Why... If that was the case the CUbs wouldn't have scored any runs that inning since 2 of teh doubles were on first pitches. Bush is not a high-walk/poor control pitcher. He'ss throwing the ball over the plate - and the CUbs are belting him ahrd. Why take a strike just to take a strike if its a good pitch to hit. They're not swinging at junk.

What's really great to see is that the Cubbies have settled down after D.Lee's injury and it seems like they actually believe they can compete with any team out there. They are stringing together hits, being aggressive on the base paths and playing good defense. I am definitely impressed.

I get so fustrated whenever I see Neifi starting a game! He should only come off the bench, and maybe start 1 out of 10 games. Nothing more.

The Cubs bullpen is looking good (so far) today...Yet, I would like to see the Cubs get a few more insurance runs right now...Beginning with the game today the Cubs will now play 17 games in a row...Way to go Jaque Jones...;-)

No doubt; I don't know why Hairston didn't start instead. He's hitting 0.100 better; and even has a favorable split vs. RHP. Neifi should be riding the pine...

Quite a line from the Bullpen today: 3.0 inning 0 hits, 1 walk, 6 K's, no runs.

What a huge thing it is to have a bullpen that's gone from being a weakness in 2005 to actually a strength in 2006. In Hendry we trusty!

Get this -- The Cubs have the 4th best record in the division, but the 6th best record in MLB. The division as a whole has got off to a hot start, but it can't last forever. Being in 4th place it's easy to forget that we're on track to win 100 games, even without Lee, Prior and Wood. And our schedule hasn't been easy.

And just like that Jacque Jones' OPS is precisely in line with his career numbers. That doesn't mean they are great numbers, just that he's doing what can be expected of him.

"And our schedule hasn't been easy" Sorta has. I agree with you on everything else.

Nice move by Dusty to get Williamson back out there after a tough outing. Some of his lineup/strategy moves are mind-blowers, but I think he does understand the ballplayers' mindset, understands that every player will have ups and downs over a year, and keeps things on a pretty even keel.

Jacos -- as of Monday, I thought it was the toughest in MLB (although that doesn't mean much this time of year). Almost 1/3 of our games have been against STL, and another 5 have been against the inexplicably hot Reds. It's too early to draw any conclusions based on schedules, but the fact that we are doing this without some key guys is encouraging.

Not quite. After, this game, Jacque Jones' OPS platoon split is 924/100 (yes, 100 in 11 at-bats) this year. Over his career, it's 829/610: i.e. a long and well-established record for failure against portsiders. The fact that his OPS is in line with his career numbers obscured the great season he's having against THE ONLY PITCHERS HE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO FACE. Dusty leaving Jones in the starting line-up against left handers and being surprised when he's booed for sucking is like leaving a recovering alcoholic in a brewery for a weekend and being surprised at the results.

433- Agreed. I'm happy they are where they are at without those key players. I don't see a real tough series(SF. iffy) until they play the World Champs. I just threw up in my mouth after typing the last sentence.

Elgenie-- I agree with you on nearly everything except the division of blame about Jacque's playing time. I'm a Hendry supporter, but it is his fault, not Dusty's, that Jacque is in the lineup everyday. You don't pay $15 mil to a platoon player. You simply don't -- especially one who could potentially block your top prospect. That, and there's not really a great option right now to platoon him with.

"#37 of 50: By JeffB (April 28, 2006 03:31 PM) I get so fustrated whenever I see Neifi starting a game! He should only come off the bench, and maybe start 1 out of 10 games. Nothing more." Why so he can pinch hit? Neifi's biggest value is his glove so you maximize that by having him in the field for as long as possible. Not to mention that he won't start as often when Lee gets back On a different note, When did you ever have this much faith in our bullpen? 84? Ever? WOW!

I saw the 1 pitch 1 out thing with Neifi at the time and was pissed too...but then I looked at it and several of our big hits were off the first pitch...I'm comfortable with the fact that that was the scouting report and gameplan...I'll give him a pass this once.

Neifi don't need no stinkin' scouting report to make out on the first pitch. It's what the golden gloveman does. ;^) AND HERE'S ANOTHER TOAST TO OUR PEN! YOU GUYS ARE PITCHING LIKE THE BEST THERE EVER WAS! burma shave

Yeah, Tom we have to get that J Jones out of town. His numbers really suck, oh wait what did he do today?, and how many BIG home runs has he hit, and how well has the defense been in rf, and it is April right, and his numbers are better than Ramirez still (not a knock on Ramirez). Also, for those number geeks out there that can't see Pierre's value...I point to the play today on the bunt hit. Koskie had an easy play and Pierre's speed made him hurry into a bad play. Next batter Cedeno sees a fastball due to Bush's preocupation with Pierre. Homerun, a 2 run homerun. #'s don't tell the whole story otherwise they would call it math and not baseball.

If Neifi starting can ruin your whole day you need to get a life!

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

Here are the Cubs pitchers reports from Tuesday afternoon's Cardinals - Cubs game art Sloan Park in Mesa:

    SHOTA IMANAGA
    FB: 90-92
    CUT: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
    SPLIT: 81-84
    CV: 73-74
COMMENT: Worked three innings plus two batters in the fourth... allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits (six singles and two doubles) walked one, and struck out six (four swinging), with a 1/2 GO/AO... he threw 73 pitches (52 strikes - 10 swing & miss - 19 foul balls)... surrendered one run in the top of the 1st on a one-out double off Cody Bellinger's glove in deep straight-away CF followed one out later by two consecutive two-out bloop singles, allowed two runs (one earned) in the 2nd after retiring the first two hitters (first batter had a nine-pitch AB with four consecutive two-strike foul balls before being retired 3 -U) on a two-out infield single (weak throw on the run by Nico Hoerner), a hard-contact line drive RBI double down the RF line, and an E-1 (missed catch) by Imanaga on what should been an inning-ending 3-1 GO, gave up another run in the 3rd on a two-out walk on a 3-2 pitch and an RBI double to LF, and two consecutive singles leading off the top of the 4th before being relieved (runners were ultimately left stranded)... threw 18 pitches in the 1st inning (14 strikes - two swing & miss, one on FB and the other on a SL - four foul balls), 24 pitches in the 2nd inning (17 strikes - three swing & miss, one on FB, two SPLIT - six foul balls), 19 pitches in the 3rd inning (13 strikes - seven swing & miss, three on SL, two on SPLIT, one on FB - three foul balls), and 12 pitches without retiring a batter in the top of the 4th (8 strikes - no swing & miss - four foul balls)... Imanaga throws a lot of pitches per inning, but it's not because he doesn't throw strikes...  if anything, he throws too many strikes (he threw 70% strikes on Tuesday)... while he gets a ton of swing & miss (and strikeouts), he also induces a lot of foul balls because he doesn't try to make hitters chase his pitches by throwing them out of the strike zone... rather, he uses his very diverse pitch mix to get swing & miss (and lots of foul balls as well)... he also is a fly ball pitcher who will give up more than his share of HR during the course of the season...

    JOE NAHAS

    CV: 80-81
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day... relieved Imanaga with runners at first and second and no outs in the top of the 4th, and after an E-2 catcher's interference committed by Miguel Amaya loaded he bases, Nahas struck out the side (one swinging & two looking)... threw 16 pitches (11 strikes - two swinging)...

    YENCY ALMONTE
    FB: 89-92
    CH: 86
    SL: 79
COMMENT: Threw an eight-pitch 5th (five strikes - no swing & miss), with a 5-3 GO for the first out and an inning-ending 4-6-3 DP after a one-out single... command was a bit off but he worked through it...

    FRANKIE SCALZO JR
    FB: 94-95
    CH: 88
    SL: 83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 6th inning... got the first outs easily (a P-5 and a 4-3 GO) on just three pitches, before allowing three consecutive two-out hard-contact hits (a double and two singles), with the third hit on pitch # 9 resulting in a runner being thrown out at the plate by RF Christian Franklin for the third out of the inning...

    MICHAEL ARIAS
    FB: 94-96
    CH: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and allowed a hard-contact double on the third pitch of the 7th inning (a 96 MPH FB), and the runner came around to score on a 4-3 GO and a WP... gave up two other loud contact outs (an L-7 and an F-9)... threw 18 pitches (only 10 strikes - only one swing & miss)... stuff is electric but still very raw and he continues to have difficulty commanding it, and while he has the repertoire of a SP, he throws too many pitches-per-inning to be a SP and not enough strikes to be a closer... he is most definitely still a work-in-progress...

    ZAC LEIGH:
    FB: 93-94
    CH: 89
    SL: 81-83
    CV: 78
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and tossed a 1-2-3 8th (4-3 GO, K-swinging on a sweeper, K-looking on another sweeper)... threw 14 pitches (11 strikes - one swing & miss - eight foul balls)... kept pumping pitches into the strike zone but had difficulty putting hitters away (ergo a ton of foul balls)... FB velo is nowhere near the 96-98 MPH it was a couple of years ago when he was a Top 30 prospect, but his secondaries are better...

    JOSE ROMERO:
    FB: 93-95
    SL: 82-84
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 9th (14 pitches - only six strikes- no swing & miss) and allowed a solo HR after two near-HR fly outs to the warning track, before getting a 3-1 GO to end the inning... it was like batting practice when he wasn't throwing pitches out of the strike zone...

AZ Phil, speaking of Jordan Wicks having better command when he tires a bit, I remember reading about Dennis Lamp 40 years ago and his sinker that was better after 3 or 4 innings when he would tire a bit and get more sink with a little less speed on the pitch.  The key for Lamp was getting to the 4th inning.
