Recipe for a 7-1 Homestand

  • Outscore opponents 67-28 (41-9 over the last 4 games)
  • Score first in 6 of the 8 games (they won 5 of the 6 games they scored first in)
  • Out-homer your opponents 10-8
  • Hit 342/436/535 as a team
  • Walk 43 times, while only allowing 28 free passes yourself
  • Hit .389 with 21 RBI's with the bases loaded
  • Pitch to a tune of 3.25 ERA as a team
  • Hold opposing team to a 219/300/364 line
  • Bear down and hold the opposing team to 197/310/361 with men in scoring position
  • Strike out 56 batters in 72 IP (7.375 K/9)
  • Beat up on the Reds and Pirates and use that momentum to finish off the Mets

On an unrelated note, ESPN headline says "Bengals nix Chad offer." Sorry to hear your football dreams have been quashed Chad.

I heard Chad was trying to be the next great Bengals wide receiver, but they turned him down because he was white.

The Cubs clogged the bases 43 times with walks and still went 7-1? How could that be? It's a paradox! And to think that two of the wins were against Dusty...

Amusing little highlight from the article: "No team has made an offer at any price at any time. That's a simple fact,'' Bonds' agent Jeff Borris told SI.com. "At this point in time, no club has even offered the minimum salary. And even though the minimum salary wouldn't be a bona fide offer for a player of his stature, it's beyond comprehension that no team [has made] such an offer.''" And I don't think I'd like that NBA rule, Rob. MLB teams get desperate later in the year after injuries and would spend some crazy money on stop gaps. After a while I could see all the superstars refusing long-term contracts and instead working free lance and bouncing around. Plus, I kind of like how certain guys are identified by their team. Like Ryan Howard is a Phillie... Vlad is an Angel... A Rod is a Ranger... etc.

I can't possibly imagine anyone passing up a multi-year contract for a cheap, 10-day contract...ever. The 10 day contracts in the NBA are only used to fill-in for injured players and teams have the option to renew them or pick up the player for the whole year at the end of the 10-day deal.

It wouldn't really change much and you can probably do something similar anyway right now by just releasing a player after 15 games or something and a minimun salary.

http://www.southtownstar.com/sports/907454,042208sptsantana.article ''I was open to anything,'' said Santana, whose trade to the Mets in a 4-for-1 deal in February boosted them past the Cubs as the popular favorite to win the NL pennant. ''My mind-set was if they're going to trade me, that they trade me to a team willing to do whatever it takes to win it all. It looks like they're trying to win here (in Chicago). That's what I was looking for.'' Cubs officials won't comment publicly about Santana, but privately they said they called the Twins when general manager Bill Smith put Santana on the block last winter and were told Santana wouldn't waive his no-trade clause for any team that didn't train in Florida or play on the East Coast. Santana said Monday that nobody told him the Cubs called and that - despite the fact he makes his home in Fort Myers, Fla., where his young kids are in school - the Florida spring training issue was overblown. ''I said that would be more convenient,'' he said.

Renteria already had dropped in my estimation after he clocked Fontenot in that game in Atlanta last year. Now he has sunk to the level of detestable idiot. I think Bobby Jenks should dial up that fastball high & inside a few times this year. Let's see how he reacts under pressure.

If everybody recalls, Renteria delivered a forearm to Fontenot's head on a stolen base attempt immediately after reaching first on the HBP (without comment or warning by the umpires who had just tossed Lilly for the HBP). Renteria then took himself out of the game before he came up to bat again, claiming injury on the HBP. What chicken shit.

the thing that bugged me about the renteria/fontenot thing was fontenot was up as a fresh kid for the first time in a couple years and had played like 3-4 games before "the incident". it was an opportunistic target, but rent. should have either let his pitchers handle it or go after someone who wasn't barely off the bus.

Believe Fontenot tripled and/or homered later in that game after being bush-leagued by Renteria...

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

  • Eric S (view)

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).

Kris Bryant to IL with low back strain. He’s keeping the Rockies docs busy.
