Yea, the strikeout was rough, but in the bigger picture, Murton does not seem to be developing at all. I don't think we've seen enough of him to say for certain that he is regressing, but you'd like to see some growth out of the guy.

Today's game was full of drama, but turned out the right way for Cubs fans. I'll take it as long as it's a W. A-Ram, Soto, Lee, and Cedeno all had very nice days at the plate, while Theriot came through late.

got to give Lou alot of credit for how he uses his players----again, no position player left on bench when game ended---he goes for the victory now, doesn't worry about next inning----in both of Woods blown saves, Pitt and tonight, he didn't lose the game after giving up the tying run--that shows alot, good to see him k the side also---total team victory, only players not in game were Hart and the other starting pitchers(Marquis ran in 10th)--great game!!!

Nice win. Would have liked to see Wood close it out in the 9th but the result is the same. This team is firing on all cylinders right now. Lets go for the sweep!

So great to see the Cubs playing so well. I really like this team. Having been to 5 home games this year it really is a different feel around Wrigley. The players just seem different. It is amazing. I honestly don't want Soriano to come back. This is a TEAM right now and Soriano is the farest from a team player there is. All he cares about is himself and getting what is best for him. If he didn't he wouldn't insist upon hitting lead-off. I love to see Cedeno and Soto playing the way they are; all we can hope is that this continues.

Agreed, LNL. Soriano is not the most talented player on the team nor is he worth his $136 million contract. But he is certainly a very nice player to have and although I'd prefer he batted elsewhere in the lineup, I think he's a decent enough leadoff hitter because of his power. And this BS about being selfish is just that -- Soriano has always been described as a great team player and willing to do whatever is needed to win. If he's always returned to batting leadoff, it's only because it's clear to management that he's more comfortable there and thus hits better. So yeah, posts like the one above are not only ignorant, they're borderline troll-ish. If Soriano is not on this team, as ThisIsTheYear wishes, I can guarantee that this will not be the year.

I don't think anyone on the Nationals would say he is a good team player. You are forgetting this is the same guy who threatened to sit out the entire year rather than play left field, that is until Diego Bentz convinced him otherwise, because he wanted to play second base. The only reason he took the field was because the Nationals were threatening that him sitting out the year wouldn't fulfill his contract and he would still have to honor the contract whenever he chose to play. Good final decision on his part; it got him a contract he in no way deserves. So, NO, I don't think everyone he has played with would describe him as a good team player. And, he hasn't only said he is more comfortable hitting leadoff, he uses it as an excuse when he doesn't hit well in other parts of the lineup. Last year when Lou dropped him for a couple games a reporter asked him why he was struggling and he said it was because he can't hit as well if he is not leading off games.

nice win, team. congrats to the cubs on 10,000. rich hill deserved a better fate. if michael wuertz is the answer, what is the question? i hope the kangaroo court clips d-lee for 50 or a 100, whatever the rate is these days. getting doubled off 2b could easily have been a stake through the heart; glad to see the club battle back. was also intrigued by pie running for lee. i guess lou felt aram had a better chance of hitting a double or triple than a home run. is there any way to know if this is something he knew from statistics, or just going by his gut? let's go marquis; would 3 sweeps in a row be asking too much?

Umm... did you watch the game? Derek Lee had no chance on that play - it was just bad luck. Cedeno hit a hard line drive about a step the shortstop's left, taking the shortstop right towards the second base bag. Only a bad base runner (who didn't take a lead off) or a psychic base runner would have been able to get back to 2b.

just a hypothetical but...had the game gone past 11-12 innings, who would have been called upon to long relieve? Z or Dempster. Marquis starts today and Lilly pitched the day before. Everyone else was used except Hart (who had pitched the day before so probably was good for 1-2 innings max). Now that would have been interesting.

This team is reminding me a little bit of the '69 club -incredibly hot start, never give up attitude. But this team may be a lot deeper in bench strength, and that could be the critical difference.

Maybe we could trade him for Kenny Lofton *crosses fingers* ... lol Seriously, though, what a run. Cub's record the last three weeks? 15-4 ! Amazing. We all know things will cool off eventually, but still you want the highs to be high and you want to limit the damage of the lows.

Exciting start to the season for sure. My reality check is this: the Brewers and Cards are starting pretty well too at 13-8 and 13-9 respectively. I think the Cubs are more likely to sustain their success than either of those two teams, but it isn't time for the Cubs to be feeling comfortable.

I'm surprised no one is questioning Lou's use of Marquis to run, since he was set to pitch today. If only bc it did not turn out badly in this case, then that is not quite fair. Dumb plays work sometimes. A move like this by Dusty (may he torture the Red faithful for many years to come) wd have been lambasted, no?

I had bigger issues with Lou using up the bullpen in the 6th...seems like it was his first rodeo in Denver. Games aren't won too often 3-0 over there and I don't think using Lieber as a situational righty is a smart move. Marshall I understand because they view them as their only LOOGY and won't use him multiple innings. But they should have gone to Howry for a 1+ innings there and saved Lieber for later. Just no point in trying to save a 1-2 run lead in the 6th inning in Denver.

    i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

    there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.

    I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.

    I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…


    Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

    They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

    I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.

    Is it just me or does it seem that official scorers are becoming less likely to call a misplay an error? 

     

    Guess I've hit my cranky old-man phase in life.  "I remember back in the day when an error was an error.  Official scorers have gone soft.  Now where did I put my readers?!!??"

     

    Sidenote, maybe Bellinger should be a little more careful against the Astros.  That was the series last year that a play at wall put him on the IL.

    i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

    i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!
