First, the moron(s) who started the wave at Wrigley on Sunday need to be shot, along with every fool who followed along. I suppose Hot Dog Races sponsored by Vienna Beef will be coming soon. Today is the day that we get to watch Carlos Marmol walk a bunch of guys and hope he can pull a Houdini out there. Sometimes it works for him and then other times he drowns in the glass tank with the straight-jacket still on, the handcuffs still around his ankles and the shark ripping off his limbs....much like his last start versus the Diamondbacks. It looks like Dusty has finally settled on an almost everyday lineup. That's kind of refreshing. Go Cubs!!! Wow, Neifi is batting 333 versus an opposing pitcher and doesn't make it into the lineup. A lover's quarrel?

Let's start a road win streak. Why not?

The only road streak that's possible tonight is if Dusty and Neifi run naked in Miller Park. [shudder...] A win tonight would be nice, but don't you need two wins to have the beginning of a streak?

If only the middle of the order pulled this shit early in the year. Anyway...can someone remind me the rules regarding qualification for Batting Average leaders? IS Barrett close to being eligible based on plate appearances?

Cubs ain't making the playoffs and they ain't going to finish above .500...so what are realistic goals that the Cubs should shoot for this year in terms of wins and losses (player development goes without saying). My #1 hope would be to catch and pass the Astros...that is about the only redeeming thing we could get out of this year.

3.1 PA per games your team played (in case of rainouts or what not) Barrett has 337 at the moment and 344 would qualify him. If they keep him at the 3 spot the rest of the year, I think he'll qualify.

Thanks Rob...sounds familiar. Yeah, he shouldn't have any problem getting there (injury aside)

If we get good starting pitching from Z, Hill and Prior, we'll hit .500 The bad news: Dusty will be back.

Cubs need to go 34-17 to hit .500...that's a tall order especially when we are completely out of the playoff picture and will have call ups in September. But yes, I am kinda worried about this August success as it not only means we might see Baker next year...it might give Hendry the false impression that we aren't really that far away from being a contender.

Manny, fess up.........you started that wave didn't you....

I don't think starting the wave is the heinous crime; I'm embarassed for all the idiots who apparently agreed that was a good idea. If only the crowd would point and laugh at the next moron who starts the wave

I find the wave much less offensive than the little rock and roll theme songs that home batters have as they come up in most ML parks.

I see that the wild card standings were posted in the preview tonight. Forshadowing......

The day after the trading deadline, the trib asked Todd Walker what the Cubs needed to do to be competitive. He said the day baseball is one of the factors. Why wasn't that question directed to Maddux? He pitched on a World Series champ and perennial contender. What has Walker ever done?

maybe they did and he said something like, "I don't know". Or "Win more games."

I can't figure out for the life of me why Dusty constantly feels compelled to switch relievers constantly, when everyone in the bullpen is overused and each guy is pitching well. Does it really take 5 pitchers to throw one inning of shutout ball?! I'd really love any good answers...

Sheffield- Matchups is the easy answer. Also, the Cubs had the day off yesterday and only Howry and Demp pitched on sunday. So most of the pen had not pitched in 3 days. It is good to get them work. Also, Z is going tomorrow, so I am sure the expectation is that he will go deep and the pen won't be needed much tomorrow. Bakers use of the pen has been very good today and each time he has brought someone in when they were in somewhat of a jam, they got out. There might be times when Dusty uses him pen a bit more than he should, but today isn't one of them.

From what I've seen in the last week not only are the Cubs playing major league baseball but Dusty is doing his job correctly. A) The law of averages dictates that even the Cubs are capable of playing fundamentally sound baseball (other than Cedeno) and showing good game-management skills for short periods of time. B) Inspired by Prior's heroic return to the rotation, the plan is to run down the Wild Card and then sweep our way to the World Series. C) MLB teams aren't getting geared up for a Cubs team that is improving, allowing the Northsiders to eventually sneak in above .500 for the final two months. D) No Neifi.

I doubt Maddux would have spoken in anything but generalities ( better pitching better hitting) if asked what the Cubs needed to do to win as he never critisizes anything in public but he went out of his way to say how much he LIKED DAY baseball and Wrigley when he left. Maybe Todd had a busier night life than Madog making day games a bigger problem. Maddux might have thought he was back at Wrigley tonight. 6 innings 2 runs and almost no run support ( he will end with a no decision which at least beats Cubs losses)

Meanwhile, Maddux had another good start today 6IP, 2ER. can't get the win though.

Meanwhile, Izturis has played about to expectations so far since trade here: .240/.296 (6-25, 2 BB).

I thought we could expect him to hit .288 with a .330 OBA??? Swipe some bags, make us wet ourselves in excitement while watching his wizardry in the field.

Dodgers 8-0 since the trade, Cubs 5-3...looks like it will benefit all involved. Maddux has a playoff chase, Izturis has a full time job, Dodgers have a big revenue draw and quality starter...Cubs havid solid defense...

John are you really claiming victory after 7 games? Caller: Hello, is Big John Stud BJS: This is Caller: Hi, my name is sample size. Pleased to meet you.

at least the cubs got rid of todd walker at the right time...he's on pace for 81 errors over in SD playing 3rd...ow! what a bum. he's over there hitting singles...got another one to add to his collection tonite.

walker I believe is 6 for 16 with a 1 2b and 1 BB since joining the padres, he committed 2 throwing errors the first night, none since. of course we're talking about 4-5 games here...

I think everyone is getting nervous about Dusty for nothing. I really have little doubt Hendry will make a change immediatley following the season. He has seen enough. This team choked in a big way. The recent good play will only fuel Hendry's belief that there was sufficent talent even without Lee to not shit themselves like they did in May and June. This team has also come under heavy crticizm lately for not playing hard all the time or playing together. Lee and Maddux included, and they usually don't say much. Those are usually indictments of the manager guys. Everything Hendry has said recently reeks of change. The ONLY thing that could change his mind IMO is the Wild Card, and we have about as much of a chance of that as Sammy Sosa comming back.

Dallas Green: "Everything Hendry has said recently reeks of change." Has he said anything about changing himself out of the GM role?

Name one thing he's said that reeks of change.

"He could play first base; he could play a lot of places," Baker said. "I've never seen a guy who could switch-hit and throw with both hands. Watch him play catch, and you can't tell if he's right-handed or left-handed. "He could be a tight end. He could be an outside linebacker. We know he can play soccer. He probably can play basketball. Ö He could win a Gold Glove, a Silver Bat. Ö He's an athlete, not just a pitcher." --- gee..i wonder if baker likes zambrano.

DID SOMEONE JUST TRUMP DUSTY BAKER? "Cubs | Mateo to work from bullpen for now Tue, 8 Aug 2006 Cubs.MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports Chicago Cubs P Juan Mateo will work out of the bullpen for the time being after making his Major League debut as a starter Aug. 3. "It gives him a chance to be where he's probably best suited right now," said Cubs manager Dusty Baker. "He needs to work on his secondary pitches out of the bullpen. He'll come in when we need a guy to throw strikes. He's probably better suited for the bullpen right now." Today, Wed 9 Aug Cubs.com probable pitchers Aug 12 Juan Mateo (Cubs) (1-0) vs Josh Fogg (7-7) (Rockies) Juan Mateo has worked exactly ZERO INNINGS of relief.

Rob G.: walker I believe is 6 for 16 with a 1 2b and 1 BB since joining the padres, he committed 2 throwing errors the first night, none since. of course we're talking about 4-5 games here... I think everyone knows what you get with Walker: solid, professional ABs, sluggish fielding. I was sad to see him go. He was one of the few guys on the team who didn't look lost at the plate. big john stud: I thought we could expect [Izzy] to hit .288 with a .330 OBA??? Swipe some bags, make us wet ourselves in excitement while watching his wizardry in the field. Yes, and I, for one, didn't think wetting myself was funny one bit (shaking fist at Cubs front office).

Ok...reason number 7,365,241 that Dusty Baker is a tool. When asked about the Cubs recent resurgence, he pointed to the offense: "If you have got (Matt) Murton, (Angel) Pagan, Aramis (Ramirez), Jacque, Michael Barrett, Juan Pierre and Neifi (Perez) hot Ö if you get guys hot, you're going to win," Baker said." Neifi??? WTF.... Neifi over his last 10 games: 6/23, .261 ba, with 1 RBI. Yep, Neifi is smokin' hot at the plate!! Douchebag....

Question for Arizona Phil: 1B Russ Canzler hit another HR and a double for Boise last night, bringing his HR total up to 9 for the year. He's only 20 years old and had a total of 2 HR coming into this season -- have you seen this kid play? What's his ceiling?

well mateo would have pitched today or yesterday if they kept him in the rotation, they just needed a pitcher for Sat or it would have been Marmol on 3 days rest. they were just skipping mateo becausae of the off-day, They'll probably skip him again after this start as they have an off-day Thursday....likely rotation: 9th vs Breweres: Z 10th vs. Breweres: Prior 11th vs Rockies: Hill 12th vs Rockies: Mateo 13th vs Rockies: Marmol 14th vs Astros: Z 15th vs Astros: Prior 16th vs Astros: Hill 17th is an off-day 18th vs Cards: Marmol 19th vs Cards: Z 20th vs Cards: Prior 21st vs Phillies: Hill 22nd vs Phillies: Mateo 23rd vs. Phillies: Marmol 24th vs Phillies: Z 25th vs Cards: Prior 26th vs Cards: Hill 27th vs Cards: Mateo 28th vs PIrates: Marmol 29th vs Pirates: Z 30th vs Pirates: Prior Baker just wants to make sure Z pitches enough innings so his arm falls off by age 30.....

#36 of 37: By Eric S (August 9, 2006 08:50 AM) Question for Arizona Phil: 1B Russ Canzler hit another HR and a double for Boise last night, bringing his HR total up to 9 for the year. He's only 20 years old and had a total of 2 HR coming into this season -- have you seen this kid play? What's his ceiling? - ERIC S: I've seen Russ Canzler in Minor League Camp and Extended Spring Training, and at AZL Mesa in '04 and '05. You are correct. He developed into a consistent bonafide power hitter just this season, although he'd show flashes of it sometimes at Fitch, even though it wasn't reflected in his HR totals. I'm not surprised that he's hitting a lot of HRs at Boise. He has an uppercut fly ball swing, along the lines of somebody like Ryan Harvey, and I figured he would eventually start to hit a few dingers. At present, Canzler is tied for the NWL lead in doubles, is second in RBI, third in slugging, third in HR, tied for third in triples, and is 8th in OPS. He also is 7th in Ks. He doesn't really impress me that much as a hitter at this point, though. I wouldn't be surprised if he rings up some REALLY high K totals as he moves up through the pipeline and sees better breaking balls. Also, it took him two years to get out of Fitch, which might tell you something. But I'm always willing to give a kid who works hard and shows improvement the benefit of the doubt, at least until he gets to a place where he ceases to improve and make adjustments, is overmatched, and permanently flames out. I'm quite confident that Canzler will be the starting 1B at Peoria in 2007, and then we'll see where he's at after next season. It's nice to see that Canzler is doing well at Boise. They have a pretty good lineup there. Most of the starting position players at Boise (Colvin, Lansford, Joseph, Canzler, Camp, Mercedes, and Clevenger) are very likely to get a promotion to Peoria in '07, and a couple (Colvin and Lansford) could even get jumped to Daytona.

Dont judge Izturis by this season he is coming back from major surgery that kept him out for a year as I believe he had the surgery in July of 05. Most postion players who have had TJS came back in months. come 07 I think at the worst we'll see Izzy produce somewhere in bewteen his career numbers and his 04 numbers which would be: 275/313/360 with 3 or 4 homeruns and 54 RBI If he were to put up numbers like that next year in comparsion to this year's stats he would be among NL SS: 6th in BA (behind: Vizquel, Renteria, Reyes, Eckstein) 12th in OBP (ahead of Wilson, Everrett, Cedeno, and Barmes) Though stats wise since 04 he has been consisantly been 50 points higher on his OBP than BA which would mean his OBP would be .325 and would be 11th best in the NL, but only trailing Jroll by a tenth of a point for 10th. 12th in SLG only trailing Barmes by a tenth of a point for 11th. 11th in HR 3rd in RBI (behind Hall {who wont be a everyday SS next year} and Greene. So he basically will be once you add everything up be around an average offensive SS in the NL next year with the best glove of any NL SS.

The "Huh?" post of the week: 6th in BA (behind: Vizquel, Renteria, Reyes, Eckstein) 12th in OBP (ahead of Wilson, Everrett, Cedeno, and Barmes) OBP would be .325 and would be 11th best in the NL, but only trailing Jroll by a tenth of a point for 10th. 12th in SLG only trailing Barmes by a tenth of a point for 11th. 11th in HR So he basically will be once you add everything up be around an average offensive SS in the NL next year with the best glove of any NL SS." Unless you count Houston's SS or San Fran's or probably some other teams I can't think of off the top of my head. Did I miss the NL increasing to 22 teams at some point? 12th in OBP and 12th in Slugging = around average? That sounds to me more like around replacement level.

To review: for $5.6 million next year we have a good fielding, light hitting shortstop. Great? I still think that money could have been spent on getting a second baseman, and left Cedeno to develop at SS for $5 million less, and 3 years younger.

"come 07 I think at the worst we'll see Izzy produce somewhere in bewteen his career numbers and his 04 numbers which would be: 275/313/360 with 3 or 4 homeruns and 54 RBI" We can hope, but this seems unlikely given his minor league and major league results. Maybe 2004 was a watershed moment, but it seems more likely to be an outlier to me. While your prediction is under that hitting line, it is still above most of his other seasons. http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/teams/players/bio/?id=2609&hubname=mlb-cubs

Izturis makes $4.15 next year I believe, 5.45 option for 2008 with a 300,000 buyout

sorry...let me correct that: To review: for $4.15 million next year we have a good fielding, light hitting shortstop. Great? I still think that money could have been spent on getting a second baseman, and left Cedeno to develop at SS for $3.5 million less, and 3 years younger.

Real Neal, if you added his rank in those 5 catagories I mentioned and divided them by the number of catagories you would get this: 6+12+12+11+3=45/5= 9 9 out of 16 is around average. I know my way for calculating that is kind of crude, but I dont want to waste an afternoon calculating everyone of those numbers for the SS who qualify for the batting title in the NL. He is going to be worth the 4.15 mil he will make next year.

I loathe the wave. I don't understand why any real baseball fan would participate in one. Dusty had a good point, that the wave at Wrigley on Sunday was particularly egregious since the Cubs were batting at the time. Damn tourists!

Doubtful, I'm not going to chase down links or anything but Hendry has lamneted making excuses over and over in all his recent interviews. Look Hendry is not going to come out and say it. You have to read between the lines. I;m sure the very few of you who are reading into it as Dusty's coming back can see it otherwise. Hendry just recently was on with Murphy on the Score. When the subject of Baker came up . Hendry said he would take action quickly after the season in the best intrest of the Cubs. When the subject of Juan Pierre came up and Murph speculated he would be back Hendry said "Yeah, I'm all for that". The reason I've heard from reliable people that the Cubs just didn't want to FIRE Dusty. Draw your own conclusions. They will go their "seperate ways" in October I believe.

Robr, Also his 2005 pre-injury numbers were something like 345/390/410 so that would suggest that his 04 stats were more of a breakout than a fluke.

Damn chifan, you mean you can see the forest though the trees? Finally some one understands this whole Izturis situation.

Dusty Baylor: "To review: for $5.6 million next year we have a good fielding, light hitting shortstop." Actually that is WRONG. We will be paying izturis $4.15 million and he is suppose to be great fielding.

"Also his 2005 pre-injury numbers were something like 345/390/410 so that would suggest that his 04 stats were more of a breakout than a fluke." 333/370/412 in 102 ABs actually. I hope your right, but then Neifi has had a hot month or two as well.

What were Ronny Cedno's stats at the end of May again? Right after coming off contending for a batting title in the Venezuelan winter league and PCL?

I hope Izturis lives up to Chad's unlikely expectations. He could start by getting his OBP to .300 Two months is meaningless. Neifi had two outstanding months in 2005... he still sucks. Ronny will probably be just as productive as Izturis next year and for 1/10th of the salary.

#35 Neifi is actually hitting .296 over the last two months and change. That would qualify as hot, relatively speaking.

In July Neifi had a .304 AVG - .298 OBP he'll stop at nothing to make sure he doesn't carry a .300 OBP

"Chad's unlikely expectations." I don't see how it unlikely considering he's done it before. And they are not astronomical statistics so don't go throwing Barry Bonds and 73 homers at me.

funny story....I wanted to look up some stats on Izturis today and I typed in "Chad Izturis stats" into google....the lines are blurring. Anyway Izturis will be 27 at the start of next year, that's just a good age to expect improvement on most ballplayers which is why you'd like to hope that he'll be closer to his 2004 year than this career norms. And it's hard to really judge Izturis's last 2 seasons as his elbow injury kicked in last year and this year he's been paying 2 months. I just have a hard time completely writing him off as the next Neifi or Ronny. He definitely has the potential and tools to be better.

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.
