Will Angel Get His Wings?

With word that Mark Prior is likely headed back to the DL and probably done for the season, there should be another rotation spot up for grabs. Guzman will get his shot starting today and just like Rich Hill, it'll be a matter of finding the strike zone consistently for him to be successful, something he's shown to be more than capable of throughout his minor league career. Much like Hill, the Cubs just need to show some patience with Guzman, let him pitch every 5 days and re-evaluate at the end of the season. Go Cubs! So did Paul Sullivan on the Trib website. He also speculates Prior's done for the season.

Are the Road teams at Coors allowed to use the humdior balls? Man these 2 games have been brutal. BTW HOU designated Preston Wilson for assignment.

oh man we should pick up preston wilson, along with russ ortiz. :)

excerpted from the Sullivan article: Mark Prior was placed on the disabled list with tendinitis in the right rotator cuff before Saturday's game, a move that likely will force him to miss the rest of the 2006 season. "Everyone can do the math for what that does for the rest of the season," O'Neal said. Prior has been on the disabled list eight times, including three times this season. O'Neal said Prior will not have to undergo surgery on the shoulder, at least for now. ---- Great, the trainer now alluding that Prior might need surgery at some point? Toss away Prior's 2007 season folks, cause they are going to decide he needs surgery around March 20th, 2007. Do the math? One plus one equals...oh yeah this is the Cubs management talking and they don't give answers that are based on math, rational thinking or truth.

Does anyone have a link to that Mike Marshall (I believe it was him) site where it had pictures of Prior's motion explaining why it puts excess stress on his rotator cuff and labrum? I believe it's about 2 years old by now.

Dear Bob Brenly, Shut up. Your imitation of indy car racing sounds like you're trying to take a dump in the booth. Just stop.

Can we all agree this season never happened, and promise to never talk about it again?

I thought his sound effect got to be pretty good. Nice to hear there's actually something wrong with Prior, I guess. Also, nice to hear he was trying to pitch through it. Maybe the Cubs should put their baseballs in a jerking machine next season. Pierre may slug .380!

CUBSTER: "Great, the trainer now alluding that Prior might need surgery at some point? Toss away Prior's 2007 season folks, cause they are going to decide he needs surgery around March 20th, 2007." How about a full-time sports shrink to go with the physical therapists? Man, I wish that the Orioles could have been duped to take Prior last off season!

This quote almost assures you Prior is finished for the year... O'Neal said Prior would need at least 10 more days of throwing after taking three weeks off, which would make his earliest return the middle of September. Simply no point in getting him ready to pitch this season if thats how long he is going to be out. I will be kind of upset if they come back and say he needs surgery, wasting a whole month in the process trying to rehab. 2nd off I don't trust a damn thing out of O'Neals mouth. I wouldn't trust that man to wrap my ankle if I sprained it. My rule of thumb to whatever he says is, it's always twice as worse and the recovery time is twice as long.

It's going to be ugly, but at least Hill, Guzman and Marmol will get a chance to show what they can or can't do. Hopefully, the bullpen arms won't get destroyed in the process. Murton is looking better and better. A 2-6 order of Murton, Lee, A-Ram, Jones, and Barrett wouldn't be bad. But, having Izzy and Cedeno in the lineup together really hurts offensively. If Izzy is a defenfive whiz at SS, fine. But I don't get Cedeno at 2B -- so-so defense, low OBP with a lot of K's, no power, 50% failure rate on SBs, etc. Will Theriot be given a shot? He seems to know how to play 2B and steal a base.

The Cubs need to go with 15 pitchers... I can see it now: Prior comes back for one start and gets rocked. Dusty says "you know its still spring training for him"... Jones looked really bad on two plays that I saw tonight. If I'm Hendry, I go into next year thinking I need 3 new starters for 07.

Murton 3-4 today. Anyone else agree that Dusty should be shot if he benches Murton in the next week? Prior needs to sit out rest of the season. And I believe he should be viewed at best as the fifth starter at the start of next season. So Hendry needs to get two proven reliable, the opposing team does not snicker starting pitchers.

I would hope he will at least get two. I feel that he will only make one free agent "splash" like Schmidt. I'm not sure if he will make a trade or sign another 4-5 spot guy for the other pitcher, but I would like an innings eater like Clement used to be for us. If we get a new manager Billy Bucks, I totally agree that Murton is the ideal 2 hitter for us. I wouldn't be suprised if Hendry trades Cedeno or has him penciled in as 2b next year. It's anyone's guess.

At this point I picture Hendry with a Ouija board and rubbing his rabbits foot bare. Even with two year extension he will not survive a season close to this next year. Big trades and big signings or more blank stares.

Rob G., oh man we should pick up preston wilson If i had more faith in the way he'd be used, i actually would be for signing Preston Wilson to a reasonably sized contract. Surprisingly, he's done well against lefties this year, desipte his struggles (.312 AVG, .379 OBP, .416 SLG, .795 OPS v. lefties in 2006 and .258/.334/.465/.799 career v. lefties). These aren't great numbers, but its on par with average offensive production from NL RF'ers this season. Put him in a platoon with Jones and you suddenly have above average production from RF. Of course, there lies the rub as Dusty would take kindly to Wilson's aggressive approach and would start him in LF every day (even though moving Jones to LF and putting Wilson in RF would make more sense)... Ugh. The split for Jones/Wilson this year would be quite nice: v. righties: .314/.351/.551/.902 16 HR 45 RBI in 283 ABs/300 PAs v. lefties: .312/.379/.416/.795 ~1-2 HR ?? RBI in ~100 ABs/103 PAs Total*: .313/.358/.516/.874 ~17-18 HR ?? RBI in ~383 ABs/403 PAs Those numbers are similar to Lyle Overbay, Vlad, Prince Fielder, Eric Byrnes, and Adrian Gonzalez this season. Not bad production for what... $7 mil/year at most given how Wilson is currently valued? I'm not arguing that the Cubs should pick up Wilson. However, if the Cubs had a better manager and were unable to find a better priced platoon partner, i'd consider going after Wilson to fill this role.

I agree Jacos, Hendry has had two bad years back to back, I don't believe he would survive a third. Hendry and Baker both commented on Dusty's job again today. Hendry stating he will make the best decision to "move forward" come October. Baker stating that Hendry will make the decision at the end of the season. I really believe they have an agreement to disagree about an extension come October so that no one gets fired or has balme pointed.

Hey Arizona Phil? Whose this player name Samson at Mesa can you give us an update? Thank you

Thats what I believe Dallas also. They should both be in politics.

from the Sun Times: ''I'm not getting fired,'' Baker said. ''If my contract expires, it just expires.'' Reminds me of an old joke. 90 year old man goes to the doctor for a checkup. He tells the doc that he's getting married to a 23 yr old beautiful gal. The doc, somewhat concerned for the man's heart, cautions the man about being careful not to get too vigorous they have "relations". The old guy says, don't worry doc...If she dies, she dies.

Cubster, that article is pure Dusty. Whining, complaining about others, avoiding acountability . . . I don't think he has the slightest idea there is another person on the planet other than him. Much less a slew of cub fans who have been waiting 99 years for a World Series Victory.

I didn't get to see the game last night. How did Guzman look? Only 2 BB's, that was good. Well I guess he didn't make it out of the 3rd, so that is basically a BB an inning, not so good. But 9 hits? 7 ER? UGH!! Was there anything good from Guzman? Man, with these youngsters pitching 4 out of every 5 days, it is going to be even harder to watch the last 50 games or so. Like someobody said, the Cubs might want to go with 15 pitchers. Well, at least Howry and Eyre will have some support coming Sept 1.

yeah, it's easier to watch the vets lose a bunch of games, I find that much more watchable. Guzman was very hittable last night, if I recall he fell behind a lot and then tried not to walk the guys and ended up gettting crushed. Of course the first 6 guys in the Rockies lineup last night have OBP over 350, damn patience.

Guzman looked horrible in my opinion. It started with the control but he had nothing that dominated a major league hitter. I'd send him back down and try Ryu next time.

coors or not, its nice to see murton pull one to LF over the fence. about time he started hitting the past few weeks insted of sticking the bat out there for weak/crap contact. go murt.

"Man, with these youngsters pitching 4 out of every 5 days, it is going to be even harder to watch the last 50 games or so." Okay... don't watch unless Rusch is pitching. About the only exciting thing left to look forward to in this putrid season is the rookies getting an extended stay in the rotation.

Maybe Guzman intentionally had a crappy game, so he doesn't get benched again. I mean last time he pitched for the Cubs, he threw a 5 inning relief gem, and Dusty sent him to the bench for 3 weeks. So maybe Guzman's thinking, 'if I just perform like the pitching equivilant of Neifi, I'll get to keep playing.'

the last time guzman pitched for the club his role was announced when he got here and how he'd be used. he wasnt here to work...he was here to see some new coaches to work on other things, specifically control. now if they could only get marmol to "get it". drills, coaching, etc...none of that will make you find your release point...its like riding a bike, you cant just jump on it and do it, but after a while you dont gotta think about it...you release it naturally (unless you're adjusting for injury, etc.)

he WAS here to work, rather... just not much on the field. from what i saw its pretty clear he was concentrating like hell on his control, though he left a lotta meatballs on too much plate. he wasnt sharp with his control, but his arm didnt look like crap.

Yeah, Crunch, I know, Guzman was brought up to Chicago so that he wouldn't have to pitch in those pesky game situations. I'm sure he learned a lot more during those pre-game practices (which the Cubs coaches say don't exist) than he would have by throwing against live batters in games, be it in Chicago or Iowa, during those 3 weeks.

yes, he probally did learn a lot in the pre-game practices which you're mislead to believe that dont exist. do you really think guzman just showed up and sat around for 3 weeks doing nothing...with no one checking with him...no one working with him? if you ever can, you should go into a park before they start letting people in...when coaches are on the field (or in some parks in the private areas...usualy "below the stands". yes, there is actual work going on. are they dragging jones/barrett out there to do laps, shag flys, and put in 3 hours of BP? no...but that doesnt mean instruction doesnt exist no matter what bloated radio host is trying to convey to the public. it isnt a public tennis court...you dont get your prescribed time and that's it... and playing in games isnt the fastest way to learn...its a place to showcase. the whole idea that these guys go out and throw every 5 days then sit on their ass for 4 days unsupervised is a crock.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.

i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.

I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.

I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…

Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.

Is it just me or does it seem that official scorers are becoming less likely to call a misplay an error?

Guess I've hit my cranky old-man phase in life.  "I remember back in the day when an error was an error.  Official scorers have gone soft.  Now where did I put my readers?!!??"

Sidenote, maybe Bellinger should be a little more careful against the Astros.  That was the series last year that a play at wall put him on the IL.

i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!
