Why does he keep playing Cedeno at SS when he will not be the SS next year, but he may be the 2B where he should be learning the position. It's completely idiotic. These are the stupid things that the national media does not see or realize and they (and Dusty himself) keep making excuses for poor Dusty and his injuries.

I would expect that the case is, sad to say, that Cedeno is the best guy they now have to play shortstop. And I really hope he won't be playing second next year. Regarding the color comments, he is their buddy and their pal and a potential source for stories. Don't underestimate the power of group think among people in the same small business setting who socialize among themselves. They have their storyline "Cubs jinx led to catastrophic injuries to 3 key players (Wood, Prior, and Lee), and Dusty is being scapegoated by upper management to appease racists fans, mendacious bloggers, and and talks show lunatics." He apparently is just an innocent by-stander.

This is a big big if. Maybe the Cubs are eyeing Bynum? Or how about an even bigger if...Theriot? Theriot has shown more in his 45 AB's than I care to see from Bynum. He is working counts, isn't afraid to take a walk, hitting doubles, and stealing 7 bases. Bynum has punched out 32 times in 101 AB's. Theriot 7 in 45 AB's. Dusty wants his speedy contact guy? Play Theriot more than Bynum. The funny/sad part is Theriot has just as many Walks as Neifi and Bynum do. 45 more AB's and he will likely have as many BB's as those 2 combined.

Jacque Jones is really fast, but does he realize he has to tag on fly-balls? lol

Wow, Jones is pretty good, but the problem is he sucks.

I think you are giving Dusty too much credit. He is not thinking maybe Bynman or Theriot will be the 2B next year, he is thinking my SS is down and I have to use my next best SS. Dusty doesn't care about next year because in his mind he is sure he will not be back. That is why he should have been let go at the break. I agree that Cedeno has serious shortcomings, but unless Hendry has told Dusty that there is not way Cedeno will start next year, he should be learning 2B. Even if he could possibly be a utility player next year, he should be learning 2B. We know what he can do at SS.

Another pitcher injury. Nice. This sucks.

Cubs pitchers need to wear gloves on both hands - is that legal?

Cool the trainers are out for Aardsma. It's a blood bath!

They need to put Rusch in so he gets hurt so we don't have to see him pitch anymore this year.

By seasons end, rookie pitchers will have started over half of the games for the Cubs this year. For some of the readers who have followed these pitchers minor and major league careers intently, who has the best chance to stick in the majors? In '07 or beyond? How do they rank in major league upside? Who are the AAAA guys? Who has the best chance to realize their potential? If they have major league potential, where do their futures lie? No 2 starter? Middle relief? I'd like to get your input, I cancelled my cable in May.

I read in Will Carroll's column on the Baseball Prospectus web page that he broke his glove hand lifting weights. I expect there is more to this story as I have lifting weights for 30 years and to break something in a weight room you have to be breaking one or more safety rules. Speaks volumes about the professionalims of the Cubs training staff does it not?

I read in Will Carroll's column on the Baseball Prospectus web page that he broke his glove hand lifting weights. That was Julio Mateo, who pitches for Seattle.

Philadelphia radio is reporting that the Phils are trying to acquire Juan Pierre. Has anyone heard anything about this?

There was an article in the Trib this morning that specifically said the Cubs haven't talked to Philadelphia or San Francisco about dealing Pierre.

Update on Eric Patterson @ Iowa. 41 ABs .366/.417/.463. 5 BB, 5 K's, 4/4 SB. Before the Real Neals of the world start the EPatt in '07 campaign with Patterson and Pie, take a look at what the Indians are doing with my boy Brad Snyder, the former Ball State Cardinal 1st rounder(a Paul O'Neill with more power clone) From BA Brad Snyder, OF, AA Akron (Indians): A lot of Tribe fans were outraged when Snyder didn't start the year in Triple-A, but Snyder was sent back to Akron to work on plate discipline and his two-strike approach in particular. Snyder is recognizing pitches he can drive better, and has seven bombs in August. Last week, Snyder hit .433 with a pair of homers and drove in six.

My opinion in order of most likely to stick in a 5 man rotation next year and beyond: 1. Marshall 2. Hill 3. Mateo 4. Marmol 5. Guzman 6. Ryu Walrond and O'Malley have no chance now or in the future. I still think Guzman has the highest upside, but because of injury and head he probably won't ever reach it. I don't think Marshall will ever be a #1, but he has the best chance to be a solid starter, maybe even getting as high as a #2. With Hill, Mateo and Marmol, I'm not sure of their ceiling, but wouldn't rule out a #1 for any of them.

" but Snyder was sent back to Akron to work on plate discipline" From the looks of him, Glendon Rusch has not worked on plate discipline.

"It's not the manager's fault. He doesn't play; he can't control the injuries. He's not out there hitting the ball, throwing the ball. He's just making decisions, and he doesn't make the choice to win or lose. We do as players." -- Ramirez, adding his name to the increasing list of players who have stepped forward in support of the embattled Baker Clowns who make stupid statements like above should be asked then why the heck our beloved manager is being paid $4 million/year if there is not much that he can do! Managers in any field are supposed to be the motivators, leaders who give their organizations the best chance to succeed by assigning proper resources and creating an environment for them to succeed, disciplinarians who not only make sure that their team is having fun but not at the expense of their performance etc etc. Mr.Ramirez your argument above in defense of Dusty is utterly ridiculous and plainly idiotic. -cubby

From Heyman's The Daily Scoop: Aramis Ramirez is telling friends that he plans to exercise an option to opt out of his contract with the Cubs, which would allow him to join Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee as the top positional free agents this winter. Ramirez, who has 31 home runs, 89 RBIs and a .287 batting average, is also telling people he'd love to go to New York, although for now the Yankees are saying there is no consideration being given to trading Alex Rodriguez, who's in a much-analyzed, inexplicable funk. Wherever Ramirez goes, he should be able to top the $11 million annually he is slated to make. He's having a big finish, and it would make little sense not to capitalize on that even if it means he stays with the Cubs at an increased salary. The Astros, Rangers, Angels, Dodgers, Red Sox and Tigers could be among favored players for Ramirez. But, of course, the Cubs won't let him leave easily.

In his last six games Bogey, Eric Patterson is 4/21, all singles, .190 with 4 K's. Looks like the adrenaline has worn off. Theriot is our starting 2b, some people (like Dusty Baker) just don't know it yet.

cedeno is bad.

DFA Cedeno before he gets back to the dugout!!!!!!! Great managing by Dusty --- he takes the bat out of the hands of Barrett and Murton, and leaves it up to Cedeno. What a friggin' idiot!

#27 of 28: By cubswinthepennant (August 30, 2006 02:52 PM) In his last six games Bogey, Eric Patterson is 4/21, all singles, .190 with 4 K's. Looks like the adrenaline has worn off. Theriot is our starting 2b, some people (like Dusty Baker) just don't know it yet. - CWtP: Although he is 4-21, Eric Patterson also has five walks over that six game period, FWIW. BTW, nobody here is a bigger Ryan Theriot fan than I am. He should be the starting 2B.

Dusty sucks. I can't not post any longer. Dusty sucks. Three cracks at a single is better than two cracks at a single, especially when the three cracks include your two highest-average hitters in the lineup. Cedeno's GIDP just hammers the point home. Dusty sucks.

Unless Barrett needs to come out of the game this is a terrible use of Blanco in the top of the 10th. Ohman should have been bunting...

LOL nevermind Derrek advanced himself.

Theriot with FIVE HITS today. Bench fodder.

Progress --- My dislike of Cedeno had been growing by the day. Now,it's growing by the hour. Dusty's moves in the 9th should guarantee he is fired, if Hendry is watching. Take the bat away from your 2 best hitters, and give it to your worst, with the game on the line. Simply unbelievable.

Ryan Theriot's OPS with RISP?? 1.500 Sounds like a recipe to ride the pine to me, Dusty.

Just reading through the game log, and Dusty's moves in the 9th really are shockingly stupid. Stats may not mean that much to some of the people on this board, but expected runs per game situation are harder to argue with, since they're merely an average of situations and runs scored over all of baseball history. Not only is it stupid to take the bat out of Barrett's and Murton's hands, Not only does a team expect to score more runs, on average, with men on 1st and 2nd with no outs, than with men on 2nd and 3rd with one out, (therefore, Dusty is proactively decreasing the Cubs chance for a big inning) But this isn't even a "play for only one run" situation because the Cubs are the dang road team!!! I hate Dusty.

Re: 37 Not only that, but if you're actually going to play for one run, then GET THE FUCKING RUN! Bunt with Cedeno. Instead, NO RUNS.

I can't stand to watch this bullshit. Christ. Can we just fire this moron and let them strategize themselves?

go draft pick!

Wow. Just wow.

DFA Dempster before he gets to the dugout!!!!!!! OH..MY...F*CKING..GOD!! No lead is safe!!

Add "closer" to the 2007 shopping list...

oh man. what a beautiful string of loses we've had lately. we deserve to be in last place. i just hope the tigers can hang on. i do NOT want to see the sox in the playoffs this year.

go draft pick! ...and take Dusty with you.

That is going to be one FUN plane ride home. I can't ever remember a string of 4 out of 5 losses that were walk offs. This team continues to set the standard. The next time some idiot says that "the bullpen is the strength of this team", please punch them in the mouth.

its one thing to get blown out. everybody gets creamed now and then. but losing these close games with such staggering collapses is what makes a team truely pitiful. i'm exhausted. seriously, go tigers, go twins. and go muthaf***in' BEARS!

Take the ball away from Dempster and give it to Wuertz or Howry. When your closer is 1-7, it's time to make a change.

Theriot with 5 hits and an SB. What are the odds he will sit on Friday?

Maybe we should think about Dempster as a 3\4 starter next year. He appears healthy which is worth something.

3rd day in a row Dumpster pitched fwiw, but I doubt the bullpen will change much next year, other than open tryouts during spring training for the closer role. Best move is to get Wood to sign for next year in my opinion. Wouldn't be against moving Guzman to the closer role either, some unexplainable feeling he could be good there.

guzman's got enough arm angles, releases, and pitches to be a hell of an interesting closing option...he's also a kid with stamina, though...got your dice roll there, but i imagine he'll stay on the starter route for now. howry i think should have been the closer anyway, but...BUT...i 100% understand why dumpster got the job. he sure did nothing last year to not get his chance.

he's also a kid with stamina, though...got your dice roll there, but i imagine he'll stay on the starter route for now. Stamina could mean a tough two inning save. Or three or our days in a row. Stamina is not only valuable in starters...

yeah...i mean...ive followed guzman's trip through the minors and doctor's offices, but when it comes to that specific info on his bounceback rate after he throws, well i dunno. im just speculating that the mere fact he can throw 100 pitches without losing too much velocity/location will probally keep him up top...and the whole thing with Z being the only starter with worth a damn currently here anyway.

Crunch, I don't disagree. But I like Guzman as a closer for the same reasons I like Wood as a closer - you can often be more careful and avoid injuries, and their stuff would be dominating for an inning or two (as we saw with Wood last year).

I don't believe the attrition rate of relievers is any better than starters, fwiw.

Was anybody on this board upset when the Cubs DFA'd Borowski last year (aside for sentimental reasons)? I wasn't - I thought he was damaged irreparably -- I never would have thought he'd bounce back and contribute like he has for the Marlins this year (don't know his salary offhand, but i would imagine its far less than dempsters). I haven't seen JoBo pitch this year -- how's his velocity? JoBo would get my vote for Comeback Player of the Year for the NL

Clogging the bases? Not Neifi. Sounds like this inning must have felt like a Proctor-scope to Yankee fans. top of the 9th, two out, down to NYY 3-2... Top 9TH B:0 S:0 O:0 Pitcher Change: Scott Proctor replaces Ron Villone. Top 9TH B:2 S:2 O:1 Neifi Perez grounds out, third baseman Alex Rodriguez to first baseman Aaron Guiel. Top 9TH B:4 S:2 O:1 Brandon Inge walks. Top 9TH B:1 S:2 O:2 Ivan Rodriguez flies out to right fielder Bobby Abreu. Top 9TH B:4 S:2 O:2 Curtis Granderson walks. Brandon Inge to 2nd. Top 9TH B:0 S:0 O:2 Craig Monroe homers (23) on a fly ball to left field. Brandon Inge scores. Curtis Granderson scores. final Det 5 NYY 3. Detroit unlike us has a closer. Actually this year they are alot unlike us.

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

Here are the Cubs pitchers reports from Tuesday afternoon's Cardinals - Cubs game art Sloan Park in Mesa:

    SHOTA IMANAGA
    FB: 90-92
    CUT: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
    SPLIT: 81-84
    CV: 73-74
COMMENT: Worked three innings plus two batters in the fourth... allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits (six singles and two doubles) walked one, and struck out six (four swinging), with a 1/2 GO/AO... he threw 73 pitches (52 strikes - 10 swing & miss - 19 foul balls)... surrendered one run in the top of the 1st on a one-out double off Cody Bellinger's glove in deep straight-away CF followed one out later by two consecutive two-out bloop singles, allowed two runs (one earned) in the 2nd after retiring the first two hitters (first batter had a nine-pitch AB with four consecutive two-strike foul balls before being retired 3 -U) on a two-out infield single (weak throw on the run by Nico Hoerner), a hard-contact line drive RBI double down the RF line, and an E-1 (missed catch) by Imanaga on what should been an inning-ending 3-1 GO, gave up another run in the 3rd on a two-out walk on a 3-2 pitch and an RBI double to LF, and two consecutive singles leading off the top of the 4th before being relieved (runners were ultimately left stranded)... threw 18 pitches in the 1st inning (14 strikes - two swing & miss, one on FB and the other on a SL - four foul balls), 24 pitches in the 2nd inning (17 strikes - three swing & miss, one on FB, two SPLIT - six foul balls), 19 pitches in the 3rd inning (13 strikes - seven swing & miss, three on SL, two on SPLIT, one on FB - three foul balls), and 12 pitches without retiring a batter in the top of the 4th (8 strikes - no swing & miss - four foul balls)... Imanaga throws a lot of pitches per inning, but it's not because he doesn't throw strikes...  if anything, he throws too many strikes (he threw 70% strikes on Tuesday)... while he gets a ton of swing & miss (and strikeouts), he also induces a lot of foul balls because he doesn't try to make hitters chase his pitches by throwing them out of the strike zone... rather, he uses his very diverse pitch mix to get swing & miss (and lots of foul balls as well)... he also is a fly ball pitcher who will give up more than his share of HR during the course of the season...

    JOE NAHAS
    FB: 90-92
    SL: 83-85
    CV: 80-81
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day... relieved Imanaga with runners at first and second and no outs in the top of the 4th, and after an E-2 catcher's interference committed by Miguel Amaya loaded he bases, Nahas struck out the side (one swinging & two looking)... threw 16 pitches (11 strikes - two swinging)...

    YENCY ALMONTE
    FB: 89-92
    CH: 86
    SL: 79
COMMENT: Threw an eight-pitch 5th (five strikes - no swing & miss), with a 5-3 GO for the first out and an inning-ending 4-6-3 DP after a one-out single... command was a bit off but he worked through it...

    FRANKIE SCALZO JR
    FB: 94-95
    CH: 88
    SL: 83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 6th inning... got the first outs easily (a P-5 and a 4-3 GO) on just three pitches, before allowing three consecutive two-out hard-contact hits (a double and two singles), with the third hit on pitch # 9 resulting in a runner being thrown out at the plate by RF Christian Franklin for the third out of the inning...

    MICHAEL ARIAS
    FB: 94-96
    CH: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and allowed a hard-contact double on the third pitch of the 7th inning (a 96 MPH FB), and the runner came around to score on a 4-3 GO and a WP... gave up two other loud contact outs (an L-7 and an F-9)... threw 18 pitches (only 10 strikes - only one swing & miss)... stuff is electric but still very raw and he continues to have difficulty commanding it, and while he has the repertoire of a SP, he throws too many pitches-per-inning to be a SP and not enough strikes to be a closer... he is most definitely still a work-in-progress...

    ZAC LEIGH:
    FB: 93-94
    CH: 89
    SL: 81-83
    CV: 78
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and tossed a 1-2-3 8th (4-3 GO, K-swinging on a sweeper, K-looking on another sweeper)... threw 14 pitches (11 strikes - one swing & miss - eight foul balls)... kept pumping pitches into the strike zone but had difficulty putting hitters away (ergo a ton of foul balls)... FB velo is nowhere near the 96-98 MPH it was a couple of years ago when he was a Top 30 prospect, but his secondaries are better...

    JOSE ROMERO:
    FB: 93-95
    SL: 82-84
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 9th (14 pitches - only six strikes- no swing & miss) and allowed a solo HR after two near-HR fly outs to the warning track, before getting a 3-1 GO to end the inning... it was like batting practice when he wasn't throwing pitches out of the strike zone...

AZ Phil, speaking of Jordan Wicks having better command when he tires a bit, I remember reading about Dennis Lamp 40 years ago and his sinker that was better after 3 or 4 innings when he would tire a bit and get more sink with a little less speed on the pitch.  The key for Lamp was getting to the 4th inning.
