Perspective

Glendon Rusch has taken his fair share of criticism over the year for his apparent lack of off-season conditioning as well as being one of the worst pitchers in baseball. But today we learn of some very somber news, that Rusch will miss the rest of the season with a blood clot in his right lung. As Dusty points out in the Trib article, it's the second time this has happened to a Cubs player this year, the first being Freddie Bynum who missed two months of the season dealing with it. I don't know enough about blood clots to tell anyone whether one in the arm or one in the lungs is more serious than the other, but it's definitely serious business, trainer Mark O'Neal even stating that it could be life-threatening. Here's to a full and speedy recovery to Glendon and best wishes to his family. As for the Cubs, they got eliminated from the NL central crown some time over the last couple of days and a Padre win, coupled with a Cubs loss should eliminate them from the wild card. Comments

No, I think we need to get John Mabry some at bats. You know, so we can continue to evaluate him. /sarcasm

In the last 2 1/2 weeks Mabry has gotten a total of 9 AB's. You guys are too much...

What's the over/under of how long Guzman lasts? I got 4.2 IP.

Hey Glendon, they were out of sausage mcmuffins, but you can have one of my extra bacon egg and cheese bagels if you want it...Glendon?

furcal was wanted...but seriously...13m a year? nah...

Only $4.0 million salary this year ($9 million total if you inclde signing bonus). I understand it is more than maybe what he is worth, but sometimes you gotta bite the bullet. After all the bashing the first month over Furcal's numbers, he has turned in a pretty nice offensive season (.298/.366/.430). And I am sure the division leading Dodgers are not too upset they got him. Instead we are going to end up with a career sub .300 OBP SS who will hits 2 HR's a year and has been injured the last 2 years. wee.....

Who needs Furcal? He's only second in ground outs in the National League. We have Pierre. He's got 70 more ground outs than Furcal and leads the majors. I know it's hard to believe but we also have the NL leader in air outs, AIR-A-MISS Ramirez.

As much as I don't want Rusch to pitch for the Cubs, this is awful news. My mom has a history of blood clots but fortunately mostly in her legs. For one to reach his lungs is very scary, and if it had moved to his heart it could have killed him. Sincere best wishes to him for a full recovery. But once his life is no longer in danger, he should consider retirement, because he's not a particularly effective pitcher any more.

Guess it is under 4.2 IP for Guzman. Guzman out after 4.0+ IP. His line: 4.0+ IP, 8 hits, 5 ER, 4 BB, 1 K. Guzman still a ways away from securing a spot in the rotation next year, or even the bullpen for that mater.

"AIR-A-MISS Ramirez" I'm sorry but are you trying to diss ARam here? OK. Brilliant. Who needs 35 120 from third base? not me!

Chad, why I would love that out of any 3rd baseman, I would like him to hustle more, have more range, etc... While you are right about his finishing numbers, where was he in May and June? I would trade him tomorrow for Crede or Zimmerman. He is Sammy Sosa generation 2, no steroids, little effort. JMHO. scooterÆ

yeah joe crede rules, he's not having a career year or anything like that.

And rumors in Chicago are that the White Sox are looking to move Crede in the offseason.

We have OFFICIALLY (mathematically) been eliminated from both the division and the wildcard races, so those of you who had September 13 in your pool....in the words of Rod Roddy.......COME ON DOWN!!!!!!! In other news, what kind of name is Rod Roddy? Thatd be like if Bynum was named Freddie Freddiey.....well, sort of. OK I may have stretched to far to make that "joke". Sorry bout that.

WAS THERE tonight for my last game for '06. Good riddance. Izturis and Guzman were terrible. Thierot will be a solid utility player for next year. This is a good thing that we have found out by accident. Murton is the real deal and can hit to all fields. I wish he fielded better. So much SHIT on this team: Bynum, Mabry, Cedeno, Izturis, Dempster, Novoa, Rusch, Ohman, Soto - Man, I wish we could put them all in a hot air balloon and send 'em away! The only pitcher I feel should crack the rotation among the kids is Hill next year. I hope Hendry can finally acquire real and healthy starters. As I stated two days ago - Guzman is a disappointment considering all of the hype. I hope he's not out of options... The team is also woefully weak at the catcher position after Hank White - from what I've seen. Had a glimpse of Jose Reyes tonight, and have seen Soto on numerous occasions. I'm not impressed. Hope Jake Fox is an upgrade over both! This whole season was wrapped around fucking Hendry's mindset to AGAIN put all his eggs in Wood and Prior! Furcal is a better player than Pierre, but $13MM worth - it would have meant winning, what - 3-5 more games? It is truly amazing that in his FIRST year as a GM, Ned Colletti pulled all the moves and had an unlimited budget to do so. It will be apparently the Cards and Dodgers in the first round of the Playoffs. He Even got one of the Cubs managerial hopefuls! Lets move on to "100", boys! The magic number.

Cubs now 2 games back of the streaking Royals, 1/2 game back of the D-Rays. 4-12 the rest of the way would get them to 100 losses.

E-Man- Furcal is only making $9 million this year ($4 million salary with $5 million signing bonus). And LAD don't have an unlimited budget. In fact, Colletti only spent $98 million this year, just a coupl emillion more than Hendry. But overall, I agree with much of what you say.

yeah, but how about filling us in on how much furcal is gonna get paid in 07 and 08. paying furcal 9m for 1 year is one thing, but he got a 3yr 39m contract. that's not exactly a plus.

I give Colletti credit, he made some gutsy moves and they are paying off. I would think twice about the 13 mil for Furcal, but in the end it was probably worth it for us. Furcal gives you a great SS and a good lead-off man. He would've filled two needs and we wouldn't have given up Nolasco. However, I'm glad this season didn't work out because it will rid us of the bad utility player loving ass clown.

Where exactly has the great John Mabry earned starting at any point in September? Especially with rosters expanded. Is it his stunning .207 BA in 184 AB's this year? Is that what keeps Moore from playing 1b when Lee isn't?

#20 - This would have been the perfect season to get Nolasco up. It seems like FLA knows our farm better than Hendry. Where do you think he ranked on Hendry's list of guys to bring up? Marshall Marmol Hill Guzman Ryu Mateo O'Malley ?

I thought Ryu looked great last night... Scott Moore needs to play. Same with Soto.

Furcal may have been overpaid, but he was a piece of the puzzle that the Dodgers needed to win. Manny's right. Sometimes you just need to bite the bullet. Overall, the Dodgers payroll is about the same as the Cubs, so it's not like they had unlimited funds. The difference is that Colletti overpaid guys that could help the team win, while Hendry overpaid guys that are mediocre (at best) and were doomed to fail. Given the two choices, I'd go with Colletti. In some ways, the Dodgers have had a very simlar season to the Cubs, at least from an injury standpoint. At various times the Dodgers have been without Nomar, Kent, Furcal and Mueller. Plus, Gagne has missed the entire season. Even so, they found a way to win. The Cubs, on the other hand, have allowed injuries to destroy their season. I don't know that much about Grady Little, but somehow he found a way to keep his club together and headed in the right direction, while Dusty has just thrown up his hands.

Dallas Green: This would have been the perfect season to get Nolasco up. It seems like FLA knows our farm better than Hendry. Where do you think he ranked on Hendry's list of guys to bring up? Bah... the Cubs are deep with pitching prospects. When you are deep in an area like that, it makes sense to trade for other pieces.

Sweet Lou: I will agree with you that indeed Hendry has made some fatal errors overpaying for players who don't produce. However, two major differences in the teams are that the Dodgers have bona fide MLB Starters pitching deep into games (like last night, for example), and a REALLY deep farm system and bench. This is why during their injury stretches, they were able to tread water well, while our ship sank! In fact they are deep enough to not start Julio Lugo last night and Betemit was incredible at 3B! If only we were so fortunate! If the Cubs had a couple of other "real" pitchers on the team, it would have made a huge difference this season - although they would probably be still below .500! MANNY: If you would be so kind for the benefit of all of us, could you put together a FA list of players for 2007 by position? This will give us lots to argue about and discuss for the next six months!

for those of you who still think Furcal was a good idea at Derrek Lee money, take a look at his road numbers. 273/315/378 ...HOW COULD HENDRY PASS THAT UP?!?

Provided, of course, that those pieces aren't ass-sucking out-machines.

E-Man Google "baseball contracts" and go to the first hit. It's a great website that has the skinny on the contract situation for every player, as well as rundowns of available FAs.

I cannot believe (well, actually I can, but...) that people are STILL complaining about not getting Furcal. He was offered, what, about $50 million to come here? Seems pretty freaking fair. Hendry tried, he failed. MOVE ON already! And let's keep dissing Aramis, who, of course, was the only player in May and June who was shit.

I agree, Tito. Not getting Furcal was disappointing, but about 100 times worse is the fact that Hendry has now locked us into 3 years $15 mil for Cesar Izturis, who could be even worse than Neifi Perez. That decision will affect our ability to get any top notch FAs that may or may not be available. Picking up Izturis' contract was the Hendry equivalent of double-switching Matt Murton and Todd Walker out of a game in the 5th inning.

By the way, Cesar's OPS since joining the Cubs? .561 With an OPS that terrible, you could have arms 10-feet-long and never come close to making up for the drain on the offense. 100 losses, here we come.

Horatio: but about 100 times worse is the fact that Hendry has now locked us into 3 years $15 mil for Cesar Izturis While I agree that brining in Izturis was a bad move, he is not signed for three years / $15 million. He is owed $4.15 million for 07 with a club option of %5.45 million for 08 ($0.3 million buyout).

Who needs 35 120 from third base? not me! So A-Ram is goign to get 23 RBI in just 16 games? Yea...I would love that too! Don't get me wrong - I like A-Ram and say that he needs to be resigned. But don't exagerate his numbers. He has been a dissappointment for much of the year. He only has two months with any ops over .801. And his September? .234/.275/.319 Good luck getting 23 RBI in 16 games with those numbers.

Horatio said that we didnít need to be evaluating Mabry at this point in the season, and Mannytrillo said that heís only gotten nine at-bats. The point is, those are nine at-bats that should be going to Scott Moore. Thereís a catcher on the Cub bench named Reyes. I understand heís strong defensively and switch-hits. A backup catcher who bats lefty: now thereís something we could use. Do you suppose weíll ever see him? The key fact about Dusty is that he runs a seniority system, not a merit system. Veterans like Mabry get the nod over rookies like Moore. A veteran rookie like Cedeno gets the nod over a new rookie like Theriot. This is in spite of the fact that Hendry is interested in Moore, whereas Mabry is a goner. Hendry has no more say over who pinch-hits in the eighth inning, Mabry or Moore, than you or I do. I remember last August thinking that Burnitz might not hit twenty home runs because there would be no reason to give him at-bats in September, and that he would have trouble finding a team in 2006. My bad; I forgot who was managing. Burnitz got every possible at-bat till the end of the season. I guess the wind was blowing out in September because he ended up with 24 dingers and a two-year contract with the Pirates. Good for the Cubs? No, good for Burnitz. But thatís Bakerís system. No wonder the old guys love him. Dempster started the season as the closer and will finish that way. Almost no one gets demoted during the course of a season. Thereís a pecking order. Players have a certain job status and they keep it, no matter what. The fans at Wrigley still sometimes impose a merit system by booing a player off the field and out of his job, as in the cases of Corey Patterson and Alfonseca, but that is not the way it usually works. I used to admire Baker for creating a team atmosphere where a guy on the bench didnít root against a guy on the field, because what was the point--he wasnít going to get his job anyway. The system works when you have a team of proven veterans, as in 2003. When you have a lot of injuries and and a bunch of unproven players, itís a recipe for 100 losses.

I was there last night as well -- where is this great Guzman "stuff" we keep hearing about? Based on his reputation, I would have expected him to look good, but make a few mistakes that got hit. Instead, he was behind almsot every hitter, and the hitters were right on almost every strike he threw. Has he ever put up consistent numbers in the minors, or is this another case of "well, hopefully he'll figure it out at the MLB level", like Corey. This contrasts to Hill, Wuertz and Theriot (and Murton last year), who all put up very good numbers at Iowa and have carried that success to the MLB level. Glendon - we don't like you as a baseball player, but best wishes for good health and long life as a husband, father, son, friend, etc. Let's separate the guy's job from the person.

People talk about overpaying for Furcal, but if you look at how much he was "overpaid" as a percentage of what he "should have been paid," it's actually much better than some guys on the Cubs. Furcal: Market Value - $10m/yr Paid - $13m/yr % Over Market - 30% Glendon: Market Value - ~$5.99 (approximate cost of a 60-pack of Munchkins) Paid - $2.75m/yr % Over Market - 459,097% Neifi: Market Value - $0m/yr Paid - $2.5m/yr % Over Market - Infinity%

Crunch: "yeah, but how about filling us in on how much furcal is gonna get paid in 07 and 08." In those years, he will be making the $13 million you and others are talking about.

E-Man: "MANNY: If you would be so kind for the benefit of all of us, could you put together a FA list of players for 2007 by position?" You gotta subscribe to my newsletter for that info man...:) Here is the best site for a list of possible FA's in 2007: http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2000/04/possible-free-agents.html It is too long to list here, but check it out it is pretty in depth.

yeah, manny...that was just kinda...there. i didnt mention it the 1st time you brough furcal's "only 9m" up, but after a 2nd time well...i mean, hell, it wasnt just a 9m contact...it was a 3yr/39m contact for him. where you think dlee's negociations would start if furcal got 13m? aram? hell, almost anyone. the kicker is he's not even a really sharp SS, just a guy with a cannon arm and a decent glove. a great package all together...but 13m a year?

1) I'm not trying to make excuses for Guzman, but Furcal jumped all over that fastball. Was Guzman tipping his pitches? I didn't see the game, just the highlights, but it sure seemed like Furcal knew it was coming. 2) The issue with Furcal and the Cubs wasn't money; it was a drunk driving "waiver" the Cubs insisted Furcal sign that would void the contract if Furcal got caught drunk driving again. This was reported in Sports Illustrated back in April. Money-wise, the Cubs' offer was generous, and I believe the Cubs offered more years. The Dodgers are an interesting team because with the exception of Maddux and a couple others, they are full of "character" issues. Drew ñ doesn't play hurt Lugo ñ released by Astros after domestic violence charge (acquitted) Kent ñ jackass, racist (?), lies about injuries Nomar ñ steroids(?), bad reputation with media, doesn't play hurt Penny ñ hillbilly, bad temper Lowe ñ prominent extramarital affair Lofton ñ terrible clubhouse guy masked by the fact he was Albert Belle's teammate for many years Furcal ñ multiple drunk driving arrests If these guys played for the Cubs right now, there would be talk about how the team is winning but "unlikable." But that they're with the Dodgers, Colletti supposedly knows what he's doing and runs a class organization.

guzman has a LOT of pitches...unfortunatley, right now he looks like a guy who's got 100 presents to open on xmas and doesnt know where to start. leaving his fastball/slider on too much of the plate...missing the curve...putting it all together in a haphazzard way...meh. i still like his outlook, myself.

btw..ive never heard anything about kent/racism, but he is a very tallented baseball player who could care less about the game. now, not that he disrespects it, but he's got this tallent and he's good at but...but, well...he could probally really care less except for the fact it pays. he works on his game, but his social skills and attention to teammates could probally use some work.

VA Phil: "Mannytrillo said that heís only gotten nine at-bats. The point is, those are nine at-bats that should be going to Scott Moore." Let's break down those BIG 9 AB's Mabry got: Aug 28 - 1 AB (PH), rosters not expanded yet, so Moore not even on team. Aug 30 - 1 AB (PH), rosters not expanded yet, so Moore not even on team. Sept 4 - 1 AB (PH), Moore was used as a PH BEFORE Mabry in same game. Sept 7 - 1 AB (PH), Moore started game at 1B. Sept 10 - 4 AB (start at 1B), Moore used as 1st PH. Sept 12 - 1 AB (PH), Moore started game at 3B. So of those 9 AB's, only 4 of them could of been given to Moore, and Moore did get 1 AB in that game. So overall Moore could of had 3 AB's more. Weeee........

In those years, he will be making the $13 million you and others are talking about. Penn State must be into that new math, that kind where 2+2=3. Because over the next two years, there is simply no way he can make just the $13 million those of us in the world of reality are talking about. First of all, you keep bringing up Furcal's 4 million in salary as if that has any meaning whatsoever. Unless you live in a world where salary bonuses don't count against the team payroll, he's making 9 million this year. Second, if someone has a contract where they average 13 million a year over three years, and in the first year of that deal they make 9 million, they don't make 13 million the other two years of the deal, they have to make more. I don't know the exact details of Furcals contract (nor do I even see why it is relevant, but you want to split hairs for whatever reason) but if Furcal is making 9 million this year, he will have to be making an average of 15 million a year for the next 2 years. So I hope next year when you continue to harp on this long since irrelevant point, that you will keep telling us how Furcal is worth the 15 million dollars he will be making next year.

Actually, he will only be making $13m in 07 and 08. The remaining $4m is deferred until 09. That doesn't really make the deal any better; it means if they want to bring him back for 09 they'll be paying him an inflated salary PLUS $4m, and if he goes elsewhere, they'll be paying $4m in 09 for nothing.

Bleeding Blue: "Penn State must be into that new math, that kind where 2+2=3. Because over the next two years, there is simply no way he can make just the $13 million those of us in the world of reality are talking about." Here is his exact contract: 2006: $4 million salary 2007: $13 million salary 2008: $13 million salary *$5 million signing bonus **$4 million severence on January 2009. That adds up to $39 million. "First of all, you keep bringing up Furcal's 4 million in salary as if that has any meaning whatsoever. Unless you live in a world where salary bonuses don't count against the team payroll, he's making 9 million this year." EVERY time I mention his salary is $4 million in 2006, I have mentioned that he had a signing bonus. "So I hope next year when you continue to harp on this long since irrelevant point, that you will keep telling us how Furcal is worth the 15 million dollars he will be making next year." Furcal won't be making $15 million next year. He will be making $13 million.

Interesting Vorare, like I said, I didn't know the exact details of his contract. Then in that case, I hope in 2009 we are constantly reminded of how smart the Dodgers are for paying Furcal $4 million and getting zero return for that money.

Vorare: "Actually, he will only be making $13m in 07 and 08. The remaining $4m is deferred until 09." That is correct. Thanks for doing your research or at least know what you are talking about before chiming in.

HORATIO: Thanks for the FA info - You too, Manny. Re the "character issues" on the Dodgers - if only they had kept Milton Bradley. It would have made it that much more interesting. And, remember, Hendry picked JJ instead of Bradley.

Ok, $4 Million severance after the 2008 season. So then, I hope we are reminded that Furcal is very much worth the $17 million he will make in 2008 - since the severance will almost certainly be allocated to that year's budget.

Thanks for doing your research or at least know what you are talking about before chiming in. Manny, thanks for the cheap shot, ignoring the fact that I said I did not know, nor did I care the exact details of Furcal's contract. Really "Classy" right there. Should I also whine about bullying too? I forget the exact details of your playbook on how to play the victim. And I still want to know why you keep bringing up the magic $9 million he makes this year. Is it any more relevant than it will be when you don't point out that he will actually be making $17 million in 2008?

CRAPOLA FA'S! Man, I just used the link Horatio posted to do a quick look at upcoming FA's. What a Shitty Crop! The only temporary hope at 2B it seemed - with offensive numbers - are Ray Ray and Loretta. And, they're old men! Except for his Toddness. Sad, sad, sad... Actually, the majority of the FA infielders were mediocre to crap (Royce Clayton, anyone??). Of the pitchers coming up, I'd venture a guess that Hendry will pick up Gil Meche for one of the back end slots. Also, mediocre. But better than GUZMAN!

I am tired of hearing about Furcal and his contract. The question now is how does the Tribune get rid of Outhouse MacFailure, Tweety Bird Hendry and the mess they have created. This is a team with problems at catcher, 2nd, shortstop, 3rd, center and right. Their pitching staff is short 3 starters and a closer. This Cubs roster is half filled with players of AAA level talent. This last place finish is no fluke. Maybe with a completely healthy team they would have finished one spot higher. In 60 years of watching Cub baseball, this is the worst group of players I have seen.

Bleeding Blue: "...I said I did not know, nor did I care the exact details of Furcal's contract." If you didn't care, why even bring it up then? It is the same thing with you every time... Have a good day.

Wow...#54. I can't argue too much, but i did see: 1999 1997 1981 1974 And those were some really pathetic teams. Problems at 3rd and C A few teams would love to have our kind of problem there. Otherwise...you're right.

If you didn't care, why even bring it up then? I don't care because its not relevant to any current discussion, but you keep bringing up these irrelevant facts, like Furcal's 4 million salary, and ignoring other important details (saying Furcal only makes $13 million in 2008, conviently not mentioning the $4 mill he will also be paid following of that season.) and somehow using those "facts" as evidence to support your silly agenda.

How about something a little less, um, confrontational? Here's the Cubs' lineup from my first game at Wrigley thanks to Retrosheet, I'd like to see some other lineups as well. Dunston ss Palmeiro lf Dawson rf Sandberg 2b Grace 1b Law 3b Berryhill c Jackson cf Sutcliffe p Also, Les Lancaster got an old-school save that day! I didn't rememeber that!

Chicago Cubs vs Astros DeJesus ss Gross cf, Biittner 1b Kingman lf Murcer rf Trillo 2b Ontiveros 3b Rader c Roberts p

Trading away Palmeiro. Now there was a good decision. And I love Dunston leading off - he had an OBP of .271 that year. God, he sucked. I guess some things never change.

CF Dernier 2B Sandberg LF Matthews 1B Durham RF Moreland 3B Cey C Davis SS Veryzer P Sanderson

"In 60 years of watching Cub baseball, this is the worst group of players I have seen." A little hyperbole here, I'd say.

Horatio, Palmeiro had to go, he was doing Cindy Sandberg. And they did get Mitch Williams for him, double-edged sword that he was.

not to mention that the cubs had palmeiro before he discovered the wonders of vitamin B...

MannyTrillo said: "Sept 4 - 1 AB (PH), Moore was used as a PH BEFORE Mabry in same game." Yes, Moore pinch hit early in the game, in the second inning, as I recall. Mabry was saved till later. That's his role, late-inning pinch hitter. You neglected to mention that Mabry had a bad back in the period that you give statistics for. Things being equal, Mabry has the status and is given the responsibility, because he's older. That's Dusty's system.

VA Phil: "Things being equal, Mabry has the status and is given the responsibility, because he's older. That's Dusty's system." Yeah, Dusty gave him all 3 of those AB's over Moore. FIRE DUSTY!!!

Well, Manny, in any case, you were another good player that we got from the Phillies, along with Ryne Sandberg and Ferguson Jenkins. We should do all our deals with the Phillies!

#67 of 67: By Virginia Phil (September 14, 2006 04:05 PM) Well, Manny, in any case, you were another good player that we got from the Phillies, along with Ryne Sandberg and Ferguson Jenkins. We should do all our deals with the Phillies! - VIRGINIA PHIL: Actually, the Cubs got Manny Trillo from the Oakland A's in the Billy Williams deal after the '74 season. During ST 1979, the Cubs traded Manny Trillo to the Phillies in a deal where the Cubs got Jerry Martin, Barry Foote, and Ted Sizemore (among others) back. Trillo was the 2B on the 1980 Phils World Series Championship team. Then in 1983, the Cubs reacquired Manny T. (from the Giants), but by that time MT was just a utility guy. Currently, Manny Trillo lives in a Virtual World at some place called TCR(?)

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

    cards put j.young on waivers.

they really tried to make it happen this spring, but he put up a crazy bad slash of .081/.244/.108 in 45PA.
