Turn Off The Lights

I think Jacque Jones needs to sire a few more kids as he went 3 for 5 last night with three RBI's, a homer, a double and three runs in his triumphant return to the starting lineup after taking a few days off to be with his newborn daughter. Congrats to Jones and his family and keep the hot-hitting up. Tonight is the final night game of the year and the final opportunity to watch Rich Hill pitch. Then the last off day of the year which I'm sure will be used as a mandatory practice day and the final showdown with the Rockies to finish the year off. Cubs lost out on the first pick in the draft last night with their victory and the Royals loss. Second place is still in reach, but so is fourth place as the Pirates have to contend with the Astros and Reds the rest of the way who are both trying to unthrone the rapidly collapsing Cardinals. seriously, though...how many homers hill gonna give up today? =p im still scared of this dude's pitching arsenal even if 2 of them are plus pitches.

crunch: blah blah *insert lineup complaint dujour* blah blah dusty blah blah *insert bad joke* blah blah misconception blah blah why cant matt murton play catcher blah blah mabry has 2 broken legs blah blah something something pancakes. Oddly enough this is more coherent than some TCR comment posts. I see Ramirez is not in the lineup again tonight. I'll repeat my comments after seeing yesterday's lineup. Ryno, September 26, 2006 10:24 PM: I may be reading too much into this, but for Ramirez to miss a game for a "sore leg" doesn't make sense. Putting yourself in the shoes of Ramirez: You have, what, 6 games left, on the verge of 40 home runs and the biggest contract you'll sign in your career. It's going to take more than a sore leg to keep me from playing. So... and this is just conjecture, either it's worse than a sore leg, or the Cubs have already agreed to terms and he's no longer worried about impressing possible suitors. So is it a sore leg again tonight?

OR.... I'm 6 days from a big payday, why the hell am I going to risk pulling up lame with another quad injury and scare a bunch of teams off?

At least we have some consistancy.

RANDALL SIMON SIGHTING! I thought he was in Japan! Pinch hit in the 7th for the Phillies and drew a walk. What a riot to see him again in a playoff race!

According to Len and Bob, the Cubs have set a major league record for pitching changes in a season.

Can someone explain the situation where Juan Pierre DOESN'T score from second on a basehit? Was it a bloop? or a liner that just missed an infielder's glove?

Can someone explain the situation where Juan Pierre DOESN'T SCORE ... So what's new about Juan Pierre NOT scoring? He's really remarkably good at it. In this case it was a bloop to center that gave him pause. It's always something.

the funny thing about that bloop is that jones could probably have been forced at second had the ball not topspinned away from the CF's glove on the short hop for a second. That would have made for some awesome early-season late-season symmetry

I know Blanco missed the sign on the squeeze and all, but what the hell are you doing squeezing with your backup catcher (who's actually hitting) at the plate and your LF (who actually runs slower than backup catcher) on third base? Cubs baseball, baby. About as fundamentally sound as your local 5-7 year old T-Ball team. Also, perhaps managed by one of those 5-7 year olds.

blanco has layed down a perfect one earlier this season. I think it was a game winner too. Oh and CWTP, all I read was blah, blah, blah, blooped, blah, blah blah All appologies Crunch.

end of season haiku three hundred murton red headed slugger we have what a second half

Murton has decent speed, average at worse, I'd probably go with slightly above average. Which LF did you think was on third?

#9 Ridiculous comment on Pierre. No one would've scored on the bloop unless there were two outs. Pierre has been on base 231 times via hit or walk (didn't have HBP or error totals). He's scored 85 times. Dave Roberts: 179 times, 77 runs. Kenny Lofton: 180 times, 75 runs. We all wish Pierre's OBP was better. I guess what I'm trying to get at is, are you blaming his high caught-stealing numbers or something for him not scoring? Because it seems to me that if he's on base 231 times and is caught stealing, say, 20 times, that leaves 211. And if he doens't score a lot after being on base 211 times without taking himself out of the equation, doesn't that mean the other hitters' suckitude has something to do with it?

David Bush was dealing last night, our lineup was horrendous, Blanco has successfully laid down a squeeze before, and at the time, it was conceivable that it was going to be a 1-0 game. While I hate "manufacturing" runs, this was a time to do it. As for Pierre not scoring from second, it was a bloop that landed right between the 2B and CF. Nobody would have scored. (It probably should have been caught. The CF was playing shallow.) Jones might have been forced at second, but the CF bobbled the ball. If Rich Hill pitches 200 innings next year, he might lead the league in HRs allowed. Fun to watch but frightening.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    bellinger "right rib contusion"

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

welcome back happ!  double off the wall 1st PA back.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
