Fan Appreciation Weekend

Back in the day, I was always excited about the final weekend series in Wrigley because of Fan Appreciation Weekend. The Cubs always advertised a raffle for prizes that to a prepubescent kid seemed like they were giving away gold. I watched in awe on WGN as I imagined fans walking out of the stadium with more Cubs stuff than they could hold. I mean what a cool thing to do, the generous Cubs just giving stuff away to fans out of the kindness of their hearts as a way to say thanks. Of course, years later and much wiser, I'm thinking the Cubs need to be giving away houses, cars, $10,000 in cash to each and every fan as a way to give back for the crap they've put on the field. Funny thing what age does to you... Last chance to see Z do his magic, all with a stiff wind out to CF. Cubs are now tied with Pitt (who face the Reds this weekend) for 5th in the division and the 4th draft slot if you care about such things. Go Cubs! Mabry at 1B....sounds like a great idea. What's that Patches O'Houlihan?? Patches: "He's about as useful as a poopy flavored lollipop..." Ok...you heard it here...

Deluca in Sun Times has Pinella as the Cubs top choice for manager. WSCR rumor- Stone heading back to Cubs broadcast booth. If that's true, then I bet Brenly will be the manager.

I hope Z hits one out and takes the Cub record all to himself.

WSCR rumor- Stone heading back to Cubs broadcast booth. If that's true, then I bet Brenly will be the manager. ---- My father & I were just talking about that. The booth is too vanilla, and Stone is still liked amongst most Cubs fans. Brenly becoming the manager would be the smoothest transition of all since he has been around this team and players.

Stone was seen dining with the Cubs VP of marketing and broadcasting, apparently old friends ---- Eh, it's not often you mix business with personal unless you were friends long before. I'd have a hard time thinking these two are dining just as old buddies--especially since they haven't been seen together for a long time. Now that Baker and the players with issues with Stoney are gone, he can come back fresh.

One final head scratcher from Dusty Today's Trib- "I'm not in denial at all," Baker said. "There never has been any denying. I'm not getting fired--my contract is just expiring. It doesn't make it better, but it's sure I wouldn't be the first manager or the last to be fired. Some of the best managers of all time have been fired."

Okay, I will run with this. They met to tell him that Dusty is for sure gone, Brenly is getting the manager's job and Stoney can have the color job back. Or this could be Santo's last season and Brenly will get the radio gig and Stone gets the TV gig. Or they are having affair. Hopefully not the last scenerio.

stone and mcD have worked for the cubs a long time...marketing and the booth are closely tied. i wouldnt read too much into it and they both live in chicago. plus...McD dont hire broadcasters. stone turned himself into a story years ago insted of calling the story he's paid to narrarate...hendry probally wouldnt wanna bring that kinda egotistical powderkeg back into the fold.

Santo will hold the radio job until he passes...book it...

i dunno who delegates the hiring for the booth, honestly. hendry..mcphail.. probally scott nelson, but he reports to both. hendry/mcphail are gonna be involved in any hirings that effect the image of the "product".

I know Brenly has managed before, but do you think the Cubs players would have any trouble adjusting to him as a manager after knowing him all year as a "just" a broadcaster? Would it be harder to earn their respect and discipline coming out of the booth than if he hadn't already been around?

But if the Trib thinks he helps ratings, and he only had a problem with Dusty. Of course winning would be the # 1 ratings getter.

"Would it be harder to earn their respect and discipline coming out of the booth than if he hadn't already been around?" Outside of Derek Lee, Pierre and Dempster(off the top of my head) he has something they don't have. World Series Ring

Today in the Sun-Times Pierre said that Cubs players owe Dusty an apology for getting fired, because "he never ripped us once." I'm not advocating Larry Bowa or John Gibbons, but if the team is on the way to 100 losses maybe a post game food table tossed over or some players chewed out would show that you had a pulse. I know its the players who play the game, but if the manager doesn't give a crap, some of the less motivated players fall in right behind him.

I doubt Hendry has much say in that aspect of the team, he's in charge of the team. I would guess McPhail approves stuff and this McDonough guy is in charge...

Mabry down to .201, and his error leads to 2 unearned runs. Boy, will I miss that guy. C'mon, John -- under the Mendoza line!! Will CZ hit the 150 pitch mark? Dusty is tryig to give him a shot to get the win -- of course, playing Mabry doesn't make sense, if winning is the goal.

Personally bring "Stoney" back would be a worse move than bringing Baker back. Steve Stone's biggest fan is Steve Stone. He is full of himself and IMHO he is not that good at color commentating. I have heard a lot of guys who were a lot better. Stone talks way too much and apparently rubs players the wrong way. I remember reading somewhere that when he was still working with Harry there were some players who got upset over some of the things that Stone said. The way I read it was that Harry had to sit down with the player and smooth things over. If Harry, who was as hard on players as anyone I remember broadcasting was, had to smooth things over Stone must really rub players the wrong way. I think that Brenly has done a much better job this year than last. Whether it was Bakers fault for not taking care of it, or the players for being over sensative, the fact that Stone became a distraction to the team speaks volumes about his attitude. I think he believes all his hype about being the best baseball man in chicago that they say on WSCR all the time. I did notice that the last couple of times that I have heard him on WSCR he was much kinder to the Cubs than he had been before.

Steve Stone is/was once the best color men in baseball. He's a great student of that game and I have learned more over the years about baseball from just listening to him talk. He has way more insight to the game then Brenly and is a much better communicator. I feel that Kasper has to egg Brenly on to talk about the game as opposed to Stone who would always be ready to share. I hope he does come back.

Luckily Stone does not have any influence on what happens on the field. He has a dry sense of humor that does rub people the wrong way. But there's no-one better to make a crappy game go by, which may be bountiful in 2007, then him.

#13 Let's not forget that Brenly also played in the majors for about a decade. He wasn't just a manager and wasn't just an announcer. PLUS, when he came out of the booth the first time, he won. Respect wouldn't be an issue.

Have you guys listened to some of the things Brenly has said in the booth over the last two years? If you hate Dusty, I'm not sure Brenly is going to make you much happier.

Let the record show (once again) that Ryan Theriot is ready for prime time.

I'm a big Steve Stone fan. I say bring him back-pronto!

Phil: Great to see what Rosario is doing!

Do you think having Rosario may have influenced/impacted the front office's decision on including Hope in the trade for Busch at all?

it's so crazy we got a new "barnstorming" harlem globetrotters-type baseball product that was introduced less than 5 years ago and is wildly popular all over the nation.

a notion left long in the past, unearthed, polished for modern audiences and popular as ever.

No question right now Alfonsin Rosario is one of the Cubs Top 20 prospects (probably Top 15). Rosario is to the Cubs what Zyhir Hope is to the Dodgers.

The Savannah Bananas will be playing the Party Animals at Sloan Park in Mesa this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The games are sold out (15,000+ each night), and berm tickets are going for well over $100.

RAISIN: In the game versus the A's at Fitch Park last Friday, Mule threw half FB and half SL (16/16), and one CH (which coincidentally was the only hard-hit ball off him -- a near HR line-drive double off the LF fence). FB was 91-94 and the SL (really more of a "slurve") was 80-82, and he got three swing & miss on each pitch (six swing & miss total out of his 20 strikes). So I think it is safe to say that right now, Mule is strictly a two-pitch pitcher (FB/SL),

Recalled it was sampled in a Nas song.  Did a little sleuthing.  It was a Nas song called "Hate Me Now" that featured Puff Daddy.  Imploring the crowd to hate somebody seems a bit overly dramatic for a keyboardist but perhaps there is some other connection to the song.

In general there has been a weird overuse of Carmina Burana's O Fortuna in sports and commercials in past decade or so.  Maybe it is a fallback choice if there isn't anything else.

Sidenote, while the O Fortuna part has become a bit pop-culture cliched; the overall piece is very interesting and rather expansive in scope. I played percussion in a production of it while in college.  There is a rather jovial movement set in a tavern.  In the score it calls for the clinking of beer steins.  Let's just say we did a lot of research to determine the best sounding beer steins.

ooof...this is just as likely as anything.  professional organists are weird humans.

Maybe it is only played when the hitter thus far in the game is "oh for two"-na at the plate?

who was AB when it was being played?  it could be something as corny as playing it for nick fortes because fortes/fortuna...fortes...marlins...fish...tuna...sigh.

while the cubs organ player isn't a frequent groaner weaponizing the organ song selection, they all dabble in it.
